The ABC drama series “Dirty Sex Money” created by Craig Wright (“Brothers and Sisters”, “Lost” and “Six Feet Under”) definitely made its impression when it took out an ad assist in 2007 using Paris Hilton’s jail sentence to promote its expose. JUDGMENT CALL:
“Dirty Sexy Money” was a series that I really enjoyed when it first aired on television. The first season showed promise but it was such a shame that the WGA Writer’s Strike really place a damper on the series. Not only was the series chop short but its schedule was too erratic.
By the time it came help on television for season 2, it was already ten months later. Too noteworthy time had passed since the finale and to fabricate things worse, when the second season did air, again the season was out of whack as the final five episodes took several months to air after it was reported that the series was canceled. Needless to say, the series did not have worthy of a chance to salvage support on its feet.
After watching “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season”, not only did I relish it, it was bittersweet because the series ends with a major bombshell and you know there are no future episodes to continue the storyline.
Overall, I feel that fans of the series can score some closure with this final DVD spot and net some satisfaction from the final 13 episodes. As mentioned, the final episode was quite captivating and again, it’s a shame that the series will not be continued.
As for the characters, I found them all quite captivating and you eventually become drawn to that character’s storyline. I was also drawn by the drama and the multiple infighting between the characters, and it’s quite involving because one can derive similarities with this drama series to 80′s drama series such as “Dallas” and “Dynasty” which involve corporate greed, families that were born with luxury and of course, those few characters on the outside who seem to hate that lifestyle.
I felt that the trimming of the first season down to 10 episodes possibly took away from noteworthy needed character development and for the second season, although I enjoyed the series, I did have some problems with seeing the disintegration of Cut and Lisa’s marriage but also seeing this somewhat unlikely storyline engaging Simon Elder and Nola Lyon. It was a bit farfetched and in someways, I unbiased felt that the character of Simon seemed a bit too young to be the rival of Tripp Darling and therefore, for me, it hindered the storyline as these two rich corporate behemoths would go against each other. It impartial didn’t seem suitable.
I did bask in the share of Karen Darling because her character could have been handled as the typical socialite (ie. which fits the character of Juliet Darling) but easily redeems herself as a person that wants to be appreciate and wants to savor someone. So, it was quite keen to leer how her character started to evolve through the second season.
As for the DVD release, “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season” does feature solid narrate quality for a drama series on DVD and for the most portion, the series doesn’t have awful lighting issues or heavy noise during low-light conditions that some drama series tend to have. I felt that the plot earn and even the costume originate was well-done for the series and capturing that style and feel of the rich Darling family and their living location. Audio was quite certain and there are a few special features included. Although, I do wish there was some sort of commentary track included, especially for the final episode.
Overall, fans who dedicated their time into watching “Dirty Sexy Money” will want to definitely check out this final second season if you happen to miss the episodes on television. Again, the final season will provide enough closure for the viewer but then instantly give you a feeling lawful at the raze of the final episode of wanting more.
It’s hard to recommend a TV series on DVD especially when the series has been canceled but for the most piece, fans who loved the series or those who missed out on how the series ended, will score “Dirty Sexy Money – The Complete and Final Second Season” satisfying but at the same time, a bittersweet feeling that you want even more “Dirty Sexy Money”, but lustrous that there will be no more continuing episodes.

I began buying HEAVY METAL magazine when it was first introduced in our country (it is based on the French magazine METAL HURLANT), and when I saw the first HEAVY METAL movie in its theatrical release, I considered it a handsome qualified representation of the magazine–funny, bizarre, sexy in a mischievous scheme, and begin to various types of artistic interpretation. The DVD of HEAVY METAL appeals to me because it preserves the characteristics that made those early years of the magazine special.
HEAVY METAL 2000, however, is itsy-bitsy more than a vanity project for Julie Strain, the wife of the new publisher of HEAVY METAL and one of the producers of the film, Kevin Eastman. One would contemplate that Eastman, who gained fame as one of the creators of the modern Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, would display a modern HEAVY METAL film that would have the same qualities as the novel. But where HM offers violence to illustrate the depth of execrable, HM2K focusses on the gore. Where HM offers a forum for various stylistic approaches, HM2K offers jarring combinations of animation techniques. Where HM tantalizes viewers with sexuality, HM2K invites us to look. HM2K defines “gratuitous” in every scene and, in doing so, seemingly confirms every dirty stereotype about arrested adolescence in grown-ups who read comics. The only redeemable fraction of the HM2K DVD is the bio on Julie Strain–the pure unintended camp of the allotment is appealing. But HM2K as a whole offers a predictable narrative with yelp acting less bewitching than the standard digital recording on an answering machine. If you’re looking for a current sci-fi movie that captures the incandescent, satirical and adventurous spirit of the first HM movie, assume STARSHIP TROOPERS. HM2K did not score theatrical distribution for a reason, folks. Grasp the hint.
I give this item two stars because the movies are bundled together. HM by itself is worth four stars, and HM2K deserves none.
Heavy Metal 2000: About 15 years ago two guys came up with a cute plan about turtles in a sewer who turn into valiant ninjas. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were born and became the Beanie babies of their time — vastly overrated, trendy, and Gracious. So what does this have to do with Heavy Metal 2000? Well, TMNT gave those creators stout names in the amusing book industry as well as enormous bank accounts. One of them, Kevin Eastman, mature his ample name to become Editor of Heavy Metal magazine and his expansive money to marry broken-down Penthouse Pet of the Year Julie Strain. So how does geekboy retain his nude-model bride gratified? He uses his magazine to promote/worship her at every turn. Eastman wrote the fable which became Heavy Metal 2000, his company made the movie, and his wife is the star. Hmmm… something smells fishy here and I don’t contemplate it’s Julie Strain-Eastman this time. This inbred, self-promoting aspect is the biggest plight (among several) that this movie has. Not only do you have the writer’s wife as the star, you also have things like billboards in the set plot saying, “Play Heavy Metal 2000: FAKK2 The Video Game!” The accomplish is jarring and annoying and makes your suspension of disbelief difficult. It would be like seeing a heed in the background of Phantom Menace saying, “Star Wars share II coming soon!” You are trying to forget you are watching a movie and this reminds you that you are. The storyline is extremely simple and about as linear as you can accept. There is one miniature twist at the slay but it is neither surprising nor clever. Don’t spy for any subplots here because you won’t come by any. Bewitch out the T&A and tone down the violence and this is a Saturday morning cartoon. A simple storyline might have been okay if it were at least logical. In one scene Julie (the character’s name as well as the actor’s) tries to ruin the villain in a bar. She stands up with her two pistols in front of the villain and three accomplices, all armed with automatic weapons, and doesn’t net hit with a single bullet until the villain’s FINAL bullet hits her in the arm. Once that shot winged her all four guys stopped firing — remarkably convenient. But it gets worse. Shortly afterward the villain asks for a hooker and Julie walks in to try a second assassination. But the villain recognizes her when he moves the hair away from her eyes! OH NO! She’s dumb meat, just? Nope. He seems mildly fearful and says, “You! What do you want? ” When she says she wants immortality he says it comes with a sign then rips her top off and goes to work on her chest. HUH?!?! I guess this guy really, REALLY doesn’t absorb a grudge! He is actually surprised when she tries to raze him again, for the second time in about an hour! Someone else said the CGI and standard animation were blended seamlessly. I’m not clear what they were watching. Grand of the animation is pleasant and SOME of the CGI is well done. But at the climax there is a surprise villain who appears who is all CGI. The guys who couldn’t come by a job on Reboot must have gotten the HM2000 job, because this CGI villain looks like an amateur version of the Reboot villain. Abominable. Mrs. Eastman voices the main character about as well as she acts in those “Savage Beach” movies.I’m running out of dwelling so I’ll wrap this up. Two stars for the movie. The extras are quite excellent, even though there is more wife-worship with the “Julie Strain, Supergoddess” feature. That segment actually has the highlight of the entire DVD — a very revealing shot of Julie’s “protege” Arban Arnalis. She is HOT! FstFwd to 8:40 and steal a gander. If one of these two is a supergoddess it’s Arban. The extras glean 4 stars, but so what? This is like a abominable pizza with really helpful pepperoni on top, so the marvelous extras don’t raise the final gain — TWO STARS.

Heavy Metal: Very valid animation for its time, a variety of stories of differing quality (mostly honorable to very ample), well-behaved soundtrack, and no shameless self-promotion. This is Distinguished better than HM2000. Then again, Heavy Metal magazine was great better serve then than it is now. Maybe there’s a connection. Comparing the two HM movies is like comparing Toy Record to the straight-to-video Buzz Lightyear cartoon. In fact, HM2000 did go straight to video while the first Heavy Metal is a classic of adult animiation. This DVD would be a nice piece of any SF and/or animation fan’s collection. It’s a expedient, chilly, fun SF movie and I recommend you steal this one on its bear. But it ain’t The Godfather so it only gets THREE+ STARS. I haven’t watched the extras yet but there are deleted scenes so they should be ample and may have bumped it to 4 stars.
The boxed status averages out to 3 STARS but skip the boxed dwelling unless you are a completist, have lots of money, or really want to earn a nice study of Arban Arnalis (and you can rent HM2000 for that) .

Tina Fey In Control at SNL! An Absolute Star
Tina Fey dominates every moment of this show from start to finish. It is thus a very strong episode. She brings back her Sarah Palin impersonation, just as one of her bits, and it is great. The comedy sketches are much stronger than usual at SNL and I assume that is because Fey, as a top writer, wrote all of her own material. Boy, does it show! She does a news segment with Seth Myers, a pre-filmed video, where she bakes her own man out of box brownie mix, a classroom segment where she is the teacher, and so forth. If you watch only one SNL show this year, this is the one to see!

A Fun Steampunk Sci-Fi Adventure
This movie was a fun Steampunk Sci-Fi Adventure. Predictable but much better than most of the cookie cutter Hollywood garbage that has been in the theaters lately. All in all it was a very good war movie and worth while.
Loved the fact that I was able to watch a pre-theatrical release at home. for those of you who thought it was overpriced, 9.99 is what you pay to see a movie in the theater and I watched it with my sons, saving an addition $30.00, so this movie was a bargain. I’d highly recommend this movie to people who like the genre. Special effects were good and I really enjoyed the steampunk aspect of the weapons and vehicles. COAL POWERED SPACECRAFT AWESOME!
Average but overpriced
The movie is average but overpriced at $9.99. I would think at $9.99, I should get the movie (digital copy) when it comes out on DVD for free. The idea of pre-theatrical rental is cool and I hope to see more.
All in All if you have $10 and 2 hours to burn, buy it.
Don’t waste your money here or at the theaters
First off it’s nice to see a pre-theater release available on Amazon, though I have to agree that it is way overpriced. [...] bucks, might as well go to the theater and see it on the big screen.
As for the movie itself it’s terrible. They definitely spent all their money on the special effects instead of a writer or lord forbid a continuity director. Without ruining what little plot there is the movie is basically a fantasy movie and throw in some World War I guns and steam powered airships or spaceships if I am to believe the nonsense that passed for dialogue.
Save your money and just get it through Netflix when the DVD comes out.

The dream I had when I fell asleep during the film was more entertaining…
I am only writing a review because I wish someone else had taken the time to warn me as to how dull this film was. You would think a film focusing on the desire for bondage would be a bit more stimulating; emotionally, intellectually or otherwise. The main character a writer, is a young woman who likes to be bound and tied in pleather, handcuffs, raincoats, bungee cords etc. I had hoped there would be more confrontation with her normal life or at least some sort of character arc of self discovery, but no such luck. A 45 minute random “photo shoot” occurs during the middle of the movie which has her seated on some type of medical examination chair lightly wiggling in various pleather outfits. The woman looks bored, or vaguely uninterested the entire time while the camera does occasional close up shots of her “hips” wiggling. Neither erotic, exotic or dynamic, this story starts no where and ends nowhere. Perhaps this film might interest hardcore fetishists, but it won’t even titillate most people. I actually fell asleep during the movie, dreamed a completely different plot, re-wound the movie, and was dissapointed to discover I dreamed the only interesting part in the movie.

Comfortably Confined is an amazing and truely seductive movie. The visual effects and soundtrack were well thought out. The imagery is something that you will not soon forget.

The film starts with the adult versions of the four girls played by Rosie O’Donnell, Melanie Griffith, Demi Moore and Rita Wilson as they advance together for a reunion for the birth of Wilson’s child. Not remarkable has changed! O’Donnell has become a doctor, Griffith a movie star, Moore a writer and Wilson a pink and perky mother to be. This film allows us all to stare how these women came to be and it is actually sparkling insightful. So sit wait on and rob yourself on an “old-fashioned school” lope help in time.
Soon enough this movie goes serve in time to the early 70′s when kids could bolt bikes all over town, ice cream sodas were the rage, AM radios hung on every handlebar, laughter hung in the air and stories were meant to be told. The young O’Donnell is played by Christina Ricci, a tough tomboy growing up in a family of men because her mother was killed. Ricci is the strong one, the shoulder to bellow on, the fighter who would rather play sports than sprout a couple of breasts. Griffith is portrayed as a young girl by Thora Birch and as a youth is fascinated early by sex, erroneous breasts and being an actress. Birch is the adventurer, the wandering heart and the heartbreaker of the group. Moore’s child is played by Gaby Hoffman and she is the unexcited, introspective and questioning young girl. Hoffman gets herself in all sorts of dilemmas stemming from the shame of divorced parents who act more like children than she does. Finally Wilson is played by Ashleigh Aston Moore, and of all the girls she remains steadfastly the same in adulthood as in youth, a simple, rather innocent girl surrounded by a perfectionist mother (played by Bonnie Hunt!) and an entire room of pink and lacy curtains.

The young girls are shown growing up and plucky the world, finding where they all belong and how they are alike yet very different. The film brings befriend expansive memories of the time through the utilize of colossal music and ties to sure events that impacted the generation. The happiness and innocence of the decade is found on the country roads and soda shops as the girls notion their adventures. Amusing crushes and fights with boys are inevitable along with all the challenges of growing up corrupt. All of the fun of childhood is represented here, the cemetery séances, tree-house meetings, excursions on bicycles, splashes in the river, sneaking out the bedroom window at night and childhood friendships that should last a lifetime. I found this film keen and insightful, but then I came from the same generation so I can totally report. So I search for it every now and then for the sweetness and the memories of a tremendous childhood.
“Now and Then” is a very grand depiction of growing up..
And it features the early days of 2 of now our greatest and most sexiest actresses Thora Birch (here she is a blonde) and my current Christina Ricci..They shine as does the other 2 girls in this more then improbable movie..The movie features a incredible 1970s Classic Rock soundtrack..It covers all areas of what 70s Classic Rock was..Win up the cd soundtrack while you are at it along with this dvd..The only downside on this dvd is there is SADLY No Leisurely The Scenes..I wish they would have unhurried the scenes and bloopers of this movie would have been titanic..
And even better would be a reunion of the cast..Coz i am wondering what ever became of the other 2 actresses in this movie with Ricci & Birch..And this too i reflect they could have casted the “older” versions of the girls better then they did..Rosie O Donnell as the older Christina Ricci in Rosie’s dreams..The only one of the “older” versions that is really believable that can really represent is Melanie Griffith as the “older” Thora Birth..But they are not in this movie long thankfully..They are only in launch and destroy with maybe a total time of 5 minutes or a tad more..Not enough to kill this sizable movie..The movie focuses thankfully more on Ricci / Birch and the girls..Other then what i unbiased mentioned this is one of the greatest films you will ever notice..And if you had been between ages 5 and teen years in the 1970s it will bring support loads of memories..Everything from the opening scene of the girls playing “red rover red rover let (attach your name here) reach over” to the music to the looks and fair things did as a kid and teen in those days..It is reinacted sooooo well that you can’t even inform this is a 1995 movie..The sets the feeling is total 70s..It is recreated magnificentally..I am 38 this year *2004* and it brought encourage many memories for me..Christina Ricci here reminds me sooooo noteworthy of My Beloved Mandy when we first met true down to a priceless basketball scene..So this movie has sentimental value to me..Scrutinize this movie maybe it will touch you in that contrivance too..But either arrangement i can guarentee that it will bring succor memories..It will be a fun filled viewing exsperiance..A kind of a early teen girl version of Stand By Me..Exquisite Fun and Extraordinary filmed movie adds up fun for all no matter when your generation is.NOT TO BE MISSED

“There’s only God. And He has His reasons”
Few films have touched me as deeply as “Ushpizin,” the story of Moshe and Mali Bellanga, their trusting in miracles, and their recognition of the tests God has placed in their path. They sometimes fail the tests, but they are always aware that God is in their midst, and they listen for His voice. The fervor of Moshe and Mali’s prayers bring about a miracle, and also a great challenge, in the form of a friend of Moshe’s “from the old days,” and his companion, both escaped convicts. The plot takes place during the 7 day Harvest Festival of Succoth, and some of it is quite humorous, but every scene is imbued with an insight into humanity, and man’s connection to his Creator.
Writer Shuli Rand stars as Moshe, with his real-life wife, Michal Bat-Sheva Rand as Mali; both are superb, with an intensity and truth in their characters that makes them totally believable, and an inner and outer beauty that captivates. Shot on location in the Mea Sherim quarter in Jerusalem, director Giddi Dar gives us marvelous details and performances from the actors in every scene. Shaul Mizrahi and Ilan Ganani are terrific as the 2 convicts, and so is Avraham Abutboul as Ben Baruch, the man who means well, but causes trouble, and won’t leave until he is forgiven with a hug. The theme of forgiveness and repentance runs through the film, as well as God’s great mercy.
Though this film will perhaps have a limited audience, those who will love it are anyone with familiarity and respect for Orthodox Judaism, and anyone who has a very personal relationship with his God. There are those who think the Orthodox Jew who speaks to God as though He is their most precious friend is a little “odd,” and then there are those who speed down the freeway like a lemming with a cellphone stuck in their ear, and think they are “normal.” Well, it takes all kinds to populate this crazy planet, and may the Moshes and Malis of the world prosper and bear much fruit.
Accurate and very enjoyable portrayal of contemporary Chasidic life in Israel
Ushpizin is a warm and touching film about a childless, kind and poor Chasidic couple who live in Me’ah Shearim, the most ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in the world on the outskirts of the Old City in Jerusalem, and their enormous faith in and love for God. Moshe studies in yeshiva all day, and Mali tries to make ends meet as an at-home businesswoman. It’s just before the Jewish festival of Sukkot, and Moshe and Mali are down on their luck. Their prayers are answered when an unexpected gift of money arrives on their doorstep from the communal fund; they are overjoyed that they can now have guests for the festival. They pray again for guests, and when two prison escapees and friends from Moshe’s criminal past arrive, their prayers for much more than guests are unexpectedly answered.
There are many films portraying ultra-Orthodox Jewish life, but to those familiar with that life from an insider’s perspective, many of them are inauthentic. This film stands out as a wonderful exception in that small genre. It is such an authentic portrayal of Chasidic life and values that I believe many Chasidim, who normally would never watch films, might eventually watch it and be happy to consciously gain from its beautifully and often humorously delivered messages of the power of love, acceptance, trust in God and sincerity.
A must for those who like films about aspects of Jewish life
This story focuses on an Orthodox couple who are so poor that they can’t even afford a succah for the Succoth festival. Luckily, a donation helps them through that immediate crisis. Unfortunately, an even larger problem looms on the horizon. According to tradition, they aren’t supposed to turn away guests who have no other place to turn. But what if the “guests” are willing to abuse the hospitality offered them? What if they are annoying and possibly even dangerous?
I was entranced by this situation, watching a couple’s faith being testing, as well as getting a glimpse into the Orthodox Jewish world. This is a film that anyone (of whatever religious belief or tradition) can watch. It is heartwarming, uplifting and inspiring.

Disappointing season compared to 1,3, and especially 2? Probably. Overpriced box residence considering the shortened season due to the writer’s strike? Definitely. Unruffled one of the best shows on tv and composed worth owning? Ye-esh. So should you capture it now or discounted later?

Well, i’m a fan of The Office and have all 4 seasons on dvd(recently addicted so i had to play catch-up) . This was a day-1 catch for me only because i admire the show; and because i had a gift card and some discounts coming to me. I bought the special edition at Target with the bonus 5th disc being The Office Q&A convention in Scranton, PA with the supporting cast. If you don’t know what to question(i didn’t), above all else don’t interrogate professionalism or anything cherish. The convention looked great and was packed with Office fans! The camera-work had a very “we coulda done this with a camcorder”-look to it. It has the standard host/audience’s questions format. It lasts about an hour and is fun if you’re a die-hard fan. However, i conception it was going to be the wait on cast for 30 minutes, then the main stars for 30. But Steve, Rainn, John, Jenna, and B.J.(he’s in the writer’s convention extra though) NEVER appear. Oh well.
As for the other discs, haven’t gone through it all yet(episodes or extras-bloopers, deleted scenes, etc) but i was disappointed to gaze there appears to be only 4 audio commentaries. Now, with a shortened season(which is not their fault) i would mediate they would try to build as many extras as possible to befriend beget up for it. And with such a big and immense ensemble cast, they have plenty of people to resolve from to encourage do this. Yet only 4 commentaries? I only nit-pick about this cause i esteem the commentaries with the cast and crew and acquire them(& the deleted scenes) as palatable as the shows themselves.

The bonus script is, uh, nice. But you’re gonna have to attach it in with the dvd’s everytime or the outer casing will be too big/loose(you’ll peer what i mean) . The Office sticky notes bonus are also included(yay? ) . All in one gargantuan box for $37 this week at Target. The standard version is on sale for $30 this week minus the gigantic box, 5th disc, and notes. I mediate Best Lift has their spec.ed., but that comes with a t-shirt/water bottle combo(? ) .
Anyway, i hope this helps a minute as to whether you want to fork over for the Target ‘deluxe’ edition or not. Honestly, after all my credits, i only paid $26 for mine but smooth feel slighltly jipped on the commentaries and no Michael, Dwight, Jim, Pam, Ryan, or Toby at the convention(but that might be my fault as i didn’t research who was included) . Overall 4 stars for dvd region, minus one for trace and lack of extra extras to obtain up for shortened season. Having said all that, i’m gonna hang on to my copy and see it over and over again, but i’m biased that diagram. And before you near for that not-helpful button… FACT: my preview is detached better than most reviews like “office rox”, “office sux”, “my shipment hasn’t arrived”.

It’s that time of year again – a magical time when television studios release their most successful shows from the previous season in deluxe and frequently expensive DVD sets. But this last seasons was, of course, different. The writers strike prick the season down to 16 episodes and, as expected, many are starting to complain that the trace hasn’t been discounted. Paying the same stamp for less product does seem unfair. That is, to everyone but the media industry. As for me, I’m not surprised in the slightest. I inquire of to be exploited by the media – it’s nothing recent. The loyal seek information from is, with all Office season four episodes already available on NBC’s website, will people feel cheated enough to forgo this collection altogether?
Season four seemed like something of a departure from the usual style. Earlier seasons featured many episodes with a more-or-less self-contained memoir that came to some sort of resolution within 21 minutes. Season four seemed to be mainly episodes dealing with larger chronicle arcs. Yeah, there were always itsy-bitsy stories going on (e.g. they lose their parking lot, etc.) but they now feel firmly in the background, totally dominated by the more personal stories going on.
I’m not clear how I feel about this. In one sense, I’m delighted that the Office is flourishing and curious beyond a simple (but awesome) comedy present. At the same time, I sometimes miss the lighthearted format of the earlier seasons. It’s definitely a matter of personal preference.
Regardless, it’s definitely a strong season and it’s principal viewing for fans of the series because of all the major spot developments. For those who are considering skipping the season on DVD, I would argue that the bonus features create it worth the extra money. You accumulate plenty of deleted scenes, commentaries, and all that estimable stuff. Definite, you could gaze them online for free, but then you have to employ NBC’s less-than-stellar video player and you detached have to contemplate advertisements.

I purchased the Special Edition of this movie recently and couldn’t absorb that the audio was monophonic. I was thus pleasantly surprised to ogle that in this edition of the DVD they restored the new multi-channel soundtrack. Even the casual listener will sight the dissimilarity immediately.

To my knowledge the movie itself is the same as on the Special Edition (no added or lop scenes) so I won’t demolish your time commenting on that. I unbiased wanted to bring attention to the fact that the Deluxe Edition of this movie is the ONLY one any serious movie collector should think.
“Stand By Me” is a classic coming of age movie about growing up and friendship and the hurt of disillusionment when the adults you depend upon let you down. Highly recommended.
In this review I’ll focus mostly on the relationship between the movie and the Stephen King novella it is based on, and the DVD extra material that closes the ring.

The movie “Stand By Me” was made in 1986. It is based on a novella published in 1982 and the legend takes residence in 1959 (movie) or 1960 (novella) . But the epic is timeless – the conflicts and the difficult transition from child to adult apply to every generation.
There is a lot of trivia (pop songs, slang expressions, TV shows, etc.) from 1959/1960 in the movie and the novella, but this doesn’t really anchor the chronicle to that era. Every generation has it’s absorb trivia that is very distinguished to that generation. But today’s generation can smile at the trivia of 47 years ago and detached spy the parallels between that trivia and their (to them) remarkable more amazing trivia.
The movie is based on a novella by Stephen King called “The Body”. This is one of Stephen King’s best stories, and is well worth reading or, if you like audio books, listening to. The audio version lasts almost six hours and is read by Frank Muller. Highly recommended. If you’d capture to read the account yourself then you should engage the book “Different Seasons”, a collection of four Stephen King novellas including “The Body”.
The movie and the novella are very similar. There are, of course, many tiny differences, for example the town of Castle Rock has been moved from Maine to Oregon, there is more coverage of the older juvenile delinquents and less coverage of Gordie’s stories and of Gordie as an adult, the situation where the bloodsuckers are encountered is different, etc., etc. The biggest contrast is that in the novella Chris is the main protagonist, or hero if you like, while in the movie it is Gordie. Detached, this movie is truer to the written source than most movies based on books are.
So why did Retract Reiner build these changes, and what on earth did Stephen King consider of them?
Here’s where the magic of DVD extra material comes in. The “Special Edition” (2000) and “Deluxe Edition” (2005) DVDs both include a 35-minute documentary “featurette” called “Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me”, which was made in 2000. Stephen King, Choose Reiner and all of the major actors in the movie (except River Phoenix, who died in 1993) participate.
In this documentary film Occupy Reiner tells that he identified personally more with Gordie than Chris, and therefore decided to acquire the movie Gordie’s myth. And Stephen King says that he respected Steal Reiner’s decision and thinks that “Stand By Me” was the first movie adaptation of his work that really fulfilled the spirit of the memoir.
Stephen King also says that many of the things that happen in “The Body” and in “Stand By Me” are things he experienced himself in his childhood. This makes the epic somewhat autobiographical, with Gordie being in some ways the young Stephen King. In the novella “The Body” this is quite pronounced in that an adult Gordie is telling the legend in the first person, and also tells how he’s now become a successful writer of apprehension books.
So the bottom line is, if you like the movie then read or listen to the novella. And after you’ve read the novella and seen the movie, check out the DVD featurette that ties them together.
