Saturday, July 21, 1990 is a day I will never forget. Veteran Pink Floyd member Roger Waters & special guests performed a charity concert of the classic Floyd rock opera, “The Wall,” at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany, to celebrate the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. I fair so happened to be in England at the time, and I watched the worldwide broadcast of this staggering rock concert on BBC TV that evening, and it left an impression on me that has never gone away. This phenomenal explain was and IS the ultimate in rock theater, and has never been surpassed. Since I never got to gaze Pink Floyd do “The Wall” live attend in 1980, watching the Berlin concert more than made up for that. 13 years later, this landmark concert has finally been released on DVD at last, and it quiet holds up magnificently. Granted, Pink Floyd themselves had nothing to do with this concert, as Roger Waters was (and aloof is) not on satisfactory terms with his veteran bandmates, but Roger, the main composer of “The Wall,” is in top earn in this reveal, and he alligned himself that evening with some sparkling large names in music—Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, members of The Band, Bryan Adams, Sinead O’Connor, the Scorpions, Paul Carrack, James Galway, Ute Lemper, as well as 80′s staples Cyndi Lauper & Thomas Dolby, and many more. Along with an orchestra & chorus conducted by Michael Kamen—as well as the Marching Band Of The Combined Soviet Forces—Roger & his bear Bleeding Heart Band, including guitarists Rick DiFonzo & Snowy White, play this distinguished rock opinion album superbly, and the vocal turns by Roger and all the guest vocalists are righteous. The production values, including the large Wall itself (reportedly measuring 550 feet wide and 82 feet high), the ample inflatables of the Teacher and Pig characters, the radiant costumes, props, lighting effects, Gerald Scarfe animations and other involving projections shown on the Wall itself are all absolutely incredible. And when you peep that worthy Wall reach crashing down brick by brick at the concert’s extinguish, it is one of the most phenomenal sights you will ever spy. “The Wall: Live In Berlin” is also outstanding in that it is probably the only concert ever staged that is actually *better* to peer on TV than if you had actually been there live. The camerawork throughout is improbable, and takes you places that the live audience couldn’t go: into the specially-built living room in the high corner of the Wall as Roger sings “One Of My Turns” and “Don’t Leave Me Now,” leisurely the Wall as Paul Carrack sings “Hey You,” and high atop the Wall as Difonzo & White do their awesome guitar solos on “Comfortably Numb.”Admittedly, the video version of “The Wall: Live In Berlin” has a itsy-bitsy bit of touch-up work done on it, or, what is affectionately known in the business as “cheating.” The power went out early in the indicate during Ute Lemper’s “The Thin Ice,” Roger’s “Another Brick In The Wall Portion 1,” and again during Sinead O’Connor’s “Mother,” so the performances you examine of “The Thin Ice” & “Another Brick…Fraction 1″ were actually shot several hours *after* the concert had ended, and “Mother” was taken from footage of the final rehearsal that was done the previous night (Roger’s lack of sunglasses during these songs is the giveaway) . Also, Ute’s portrayal of The Wife during “The Trial” sequence was also shot *after* the concert, as the camera malfunctioned during her live performance. But it certainly goes without saying that these touch-up performances were absolutely principal in order to expose the explain in it’s entirety, and besides, they blend in with the advantageous live performances very seamlessly.Following in the footsteps of Pete Townshend, who brought The Who’s classic rock opera “Tommy” to the Broadway stage, Roger Waters has been working for many years on a “qualified” theatrical staging of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.” Whether or not “The Wall” ever makes it to Broadway unexcited remains to be seen, but, at the very least, Roger successfully brought the live rendition of the album to the masses in this landmark concert, blessedly recorded for posterity to be enjoyed again and again. “The Wall: Live In Berlin” is one of the most sensational rock concerts ever staged, and is a must-own DVD for every fan of this legendary notion album. Thank you, Roger!
My expectations were rather muted going into this. Primarily due to the “Celebrity” cast. I also had some loyal concerns over sound quality since it was recorded almost 15 years ago. The sound however is flat out extraordinary though. Although my issues with the Celebrity cast did not proceed, the quality of the sound and enormity of the production itself made the cast of characters seem less essential. The list of those performers seems really used today, but at the time of the explain, they were all “A” list. I contemplate some complaints I’ve read acquire shrimp merit or were the product of lack of opinion of the new source material. Someone said the scorpions attire was in abominable taste for such an event. Well folks, that was on purpose! They were the “Surrogate” band which was supposed to be representative of all of the excess in rock and roll that has at one time or another caused many of us to lose explore of the music.
Although, I’ve never been a Sinead O’conner fan, I idea she was a perfectly appropriate representation of the child in Pink. Her vocals were also very interesting. Again, I’m not a Brian Adams fan, but his gritty thunder was an profitable fit for “Young Lust”. And, no he wasn’t really playing guitar, or at least he wasn’t wired for sound. He, like the scorpions were there simply to provide vocals and window dressing. The music was thankfully performed strictly by Roger’s astonishing band. Joni Mitchell’s performance was flat out creepy (in a proper scheme) perfect for “Goodbye Blue Sky”. Cindi lauper was nothing but annoying. Van morrison (who I care for), seemed painfully out of site in this production. I ached for the return of David Gilmour’s silky protest during Van’s performance of “Comfortably Numb”

My biggest thunder with the DVD was the camera angles and distances broken-down for the bulk of the present. The indicate was so immense that I judge the best overall perspective would have been maybe a hundred and fifty feet or so from the stage. This conception was curiously entirely absent. Everything was shot either up stop (Like most concert footage), or so far away that the perfomers were merely a speck in the camera lense. These longs distance shots were weak primarily between songs though and really did give the viewer an notion of unbiased how vast the expose was. In fact I would say the production was probably 4 to 5 times the size of Pink Floyds fresh prodution. All of the tight camera shots made me feel too considerable like I was watching a concert video rather than experiencing the note. Another enthralling perspective was the footage shot tedious the wall after the band had been completely closed off from the audience. It really made me like how odd that must have been for Both Pink Floyd in the novel performance and for Roger’s band in this version. I mean here you are playing your heart out and you can’t even peek your audience, and you know they can’t peep you either. I would liked to have seen a minute more of the audience perspective during this fraction of the exhibit.

And to those Floyd fans who don’t believe the wall should be done without the unique band, I do sympathize. But the fact is, they were asked to acquire, and declined. Understandably, the terrible blood between the Waters & Floyd camps was too noteworthy to overcome under such short inspect, even for such a meaningful event and cause. But, the bottom line is that “The Wall” is Roger’s brain child. You can count both the musical & lyrical credits of other band members for the double album on one hand. The wall is the least musical of the Floyd creations due to the lack of input of those other band members. But in pure lyrical and conceptual terms, I composed feel it is once of the most bright and indispensable works of my generation. I aloof fill out hope that some day, all of the members including Roger will be able to set their egos and bitterness aside and re-unite to perform modern music and tour. Until that day however, I feel very fortunate to re-live the wall experience in this remarkable incarnation.

I have read the negative and sure reviews of this film, especially noting the numerous complaints about historical accuracy. But considering the era from which this tale is created, and the various possibilities regarding accurate time and residence of events, (if they ever occurred at all), I deem the film is a truly aesthetic, thought-provoking share about King Arthur.

Bringing in the aspect of the Sarmatians was long overdue in the Arthurian arena. Although various historians may argue the point, remarkable evidence does point to the exhaust of stirrups by about 8000 Sarmatian cavalry in the Roman army as early as 175 AD. With the commonly held idea that the stirrup was not introduced until many centuries later, I understanding it a valorous proceed for the movie makers to incorporate this into the film as well. It seemed to be one of the most commonly famed ‘discrepancies’ by reviewers, but I disagree – it is very upright.
If you have watched only the PG13 version of this film, by all means, please observe not only the Director’s Chop version, but pick the time to also watch/listen to Antoine Fuqua’s legend over the film. His narration explains a lot, especially about how they had to change things drastically to form the mandated PG 13 rating. His explanation regarding his version of Lancelot and Guinevere is quite a statement as well.

The alternate ending was quite sunless, or perhaps even depressing, in a intention. I don’t know which ending is more superb, and actually would have liked to have seen perhaps a different ending altogether, unprejudiced don’t know what that would have been.
I notion the actors were incredible; the battle scenes (director gash) some of the only such scenes I’ve ever watched that let you identify the main characters’ roles during the fighting; the photography was the best I have ever seen; the music illustrated and enhanced; and this movie left you wanting to examine more when it was over.
There was no location on exercise of special effects for blood and gore, or rediculous feats of super-power athletics, or campy remarks that would bring you immediately encourage to your have century. The horses were not constantly being tripped during battle scenes, either. All these were a welcome change from so many movies of today.
Above all, it passed the sincere test of a big movie – it left you with ‘a feeling’ after it was over.
In short, I loved it. Antoine Fuqua, you are a genius.
The movie is magnificent friendly BUT leer the directors lop only, however, historically and geographically it’s a bit awry.
YES there was a Romano-British warlord called Artorius Castus, YES 4000 Sarmatian heavy cavalry were sent to northern Britannia around 180 AD from southern Russia, it was fraction of a peace deal between Marcus Aurelius and the Sarmatians. YES the sword religon was a Scythio-Sarmatian ritual of the sacred sword, blood, plunging it into the earth etc
However most of their desendents by the 450′s AD (when the movie is residence) when the romans left britain would have been native british, and half were understanding to have left to fight with Constantine in Europe.
NO they wouldn’t have old armour as in the film. The Picts were Unique peoples of northern britain (Scotti were immigrants from Dal Ria in North Ireland) . They may have venerable blue (Woad) body paint as recent research has suggested it had antiseptic properties to protect against wounds, they did utilize composite bows and crossbows. The romans invited in the Saxons as mercenaries against the Irish, Scots, Welsh (no such term as Celt then! thats an 18th century invention) and other Saxon raiders. They rebelled when they weren’t paid and took over southern britain, brought they’re families over and the rest is history (evenually to become Aenglaland…England) . One of the biggest mistakes in the film though is that all the romano-british v saxon fighting took dwelling in southern britain, not around Hadrian’s Wall, and the final battle of Baden Hill is view to be in south-western england.
But if you’re not too bothered by that it’s not unpleasant, particulary the less sanitised Directors Slice version with the blood restored!
If you’re alive to check out the book “Arthur the Dragon King by Howard Reid” for a satisfactory comprehensive historical fable.

I’m surprised that this movie has attracted so mighty scorn. Is it funny and far-fetched? Well, duh, anyone could figure that out who’s seen only half a trailer! So, if we find that going in, the only remaining demand is does it negate sufficient entertainment value?

I vote yes.
The far-fetched position owes a broad debt to “The DaVinci Code”, which itself owes a tremendous debt to a time-honored history of conspiracy theories. Long before “The DaVinci Code” was published, I’d heard all sorts of whispered tales about the Knights Templar and the Freemasons – usually enthralling the Holy Grail, though.

But none of that matters. This is a narrative, pure and simple. As such, it’s well told with a honorable mix of likable and villainous characters, plus at least one you’re not too determined about. Should you put a question to a ample chronicle to stand up under intense scrutiny? Not bloody likely! To withhold you from thinking about the incongruities, it has lots of well-paced action.
This is also a family film. I saw it with 8 other family members ranging from preteen school kids to their grandpa (me) . Everyone had a generous time and everyone figured we got our money’s worth.
National Esteem is proof of what us “favorite” listeners, movie goers, readers and observers have suspected for a long time; That critics are usually wrong/stupid. This movie got awful reviews. Not even unpleasant – abysmal reviews. And do you wanna know why? After everything is said and done, it’s because there’s no sex, no tainted language, and it’s keen instead of disturbing. Well we can leave them to the business of deciding what our likes and values “should” be, and we they can pontificate why movies they thought with disdain raze up as year-end blockbusters. With that being said, I feel I should approach from a different angle. This movie is also NOT an anti-Christianity film (and I rep it involving that people would equate it as such, seeing as there are so many other mediums that are) . The monotonous and simple facts: dazzling powerful everyone interested in shaping this country: from establishing it, to breaking from England, from the signing of the Declaration of Independence, to the men we’ve elected as Presidents have been Christians. ALSO, more than half the men that signed the Declaration were Masons. Simple facts. George Washington was a Mason. Ben Franklin was a master mason. Lodges were established stunning distinguished everywhere across the East Flee. There’s no map to snort these things because they happened. Coming to the conclusion that masonry is anti-Christian impartial shows a lack of knowledge on the subject (especially since most masons are Christian to open with) . This is a completely different topic (something that I wouldn’t mind discussing with anyone via e-mail), so onto the movie.
It’s well written, piquant, with a cliff-hanger eye into history that more than acknowledges Dan Brown. (By the arrangement, Dan Brown’s unique book is on the same subject as this movie. I’m not certain which is interdependent.) It’s well produced, well casted, with very few lagging moments. The legend is titanic and the American historical sights are filmed very well, showing masonic influence in virtually everything our Founding Fathers did. I really don’t explore how this can be construed as negative. Perhaps critics don’t like Disney.
Seeing an early edition DVD of this movie, I can say that the special features are certainly lacking. Putting any type of “history channel” type documentary of the evolution of templars-to-masons would have been nice. Even masonry in American history would have been pleasurable. Basically, there’s a 5 slight mini-history that covers the same ground as the movie or is popular knowledge. Perhaps the “special edition” will have more. The lacking special features pales to the greatness of the movie. One of the best!
Overall: 9 out of 10.

A Pretty Good Year!![]()
Kill Theory: This is an above average slasher, with a sort of “Saw” flavoring (though nowhere near as gory). A group of graduating college kids holed up in a cabin are told only one of them can survive till the morning or they’ll all be killed. The rare slasher where the character development actually pays off.
The Graves: Mal-direction and less-than-tight editing make the actors look bad (even Tony Todd!) in this “Texas Chainsaw” meets “The Devil’s Rain” story. Two girls are stalked by maniacs in mining town, then by crazy culty townsfolk. Standout performance by Bill Moseley. The Grave sisters themselves are easy on the eyes and had good chemistry. Marred by run-of-the-mill-ishness and some unbelievably bad choices.
Zombies of Mass Destruction: Sharp, funny, campy, gory, and fast-paced for the first two thirds. A Persian-American woman and a gay couple return to their hometown in time for a zombie invasion. Very left politically, but okay until political bent takes over last third, when movie bogs down with torture scenes, and a church confrontation. With “Dread”, Best in Show.
Hidden (Skjult): Broody Norwegian film about a crazy guy who goes back to childhood home and the bodies start stacking up. Is he doing it? Or is it the changeling who he left to his abusive mothers’ devices on the night he escaped? Almost had me believing it wasn’t going to end in the obvious way.
Dread: Clive Barker produces first-time director Anthony diBlasi in this tense adapation of Barker’s short. Little boy Quaid sees his parents murdered with an axe and grows up with nightmares–fear of the axe murderer’s return. Two film students are seduced by the idea of studying dread for their final project, but when the results don’t deliver what Quaid wants, he goes to greater and greater extremes to get them. Disturbingly violent, with plenty of typically Barker-esque mixing of sex and horror. Best in Show with “ZMD”.
The Reeds: English movie about something haunting the Norfolk Broads. Many attempts to distract from actual story (which is run-of-the-mill) tend to dilute the effect it should have. A rather typical, somewhat muddled ghost story, with some very good moments.
The Final: Boorish kids are punished by their oddball classmates. “Breakfast Club” meets “Silence of the Lambs”. Or something. Extreme stereotypes clash. Movie depicts terrible torture, but in an oddly bloodless and detached way.
Lake Mungo: Not a horror movie. Realize that going in. If “The Reeds”, “Hidden” and “The Final” feel low key, they’re high-powered adrenaline-fueled thrill rides compared to Mungo. This movie is a documentary about the family and friends of a missing girl, with the family being semi-sorta haunted by the missing girl. Since it’s all happening in the past, with the people relating in the present, a great deal of potential menace is gone. Since it’s all secondhand, it’s also a little abstract for anything really visceral. if you can stay awake, it’s not bad. Stunning video of Australia.
Kind of a low-key year, but not a bad one.

Set in the Norfolk Broads, a desolate but photogenic part of the UK, six attractive Brits go on a weekend boating trip on the Corsair Star to celebrate two of their number getting engaged to each other, little realising that there’s more to the reeds than, well, the reeds. There’s laughing, joking, high-jinks, and then some weird local kids appear and things start getting creepy. Suddenly the film turns, as most good horrors do, from nicey-nicey to oh-my-God-how much nastier can it get??? I think that the final act could probably have done with a little bit more thought, but I don’t think the film suffers terribly from this. To the contrary, for the most part it’s an extremely watchable horror. The slightly retro feel is very ‘movie’: you can tell this was shot on film and not digital, and the piece benefits from this.
The girl who plays the lead ‘Laura’ (Anna Brewster) is very good, natural and believable and the Brit TV actor Will Mellor makes a great, humorous and then horrific (in a good way) impression. The cinematography is good, very good in fact. From a directing/writing perspective there’s certainly not too much fat on the story, and what is clever is that there’s sufficient misdirection to keep the eventual outcome in the balance. I think this would deserve another half-star IF – and only IF – the last act had had a bit more thought, and maybe punch but then some will really love it and some won’t.
Three point seven-five stars, which Amazon nicely rounds up to four for me.

It’s a shame that After Dark Horrorfest 4 only got a week long run in the theater. The Reeds is the second film I was able to catch on the big screen, and it was a solid attempt by writer Chris Baker and director Nick Cohen.
The story is pretty basic–a group of 20-something year old friends embark on a weekend boating trip through the Norfolk Broads. Disaster strikes as something stalks them from the reedy tidewaters.
This story is developed pretty well, taking its time with character development and building tension. There is solid acting from the cast, plus believable dialogue. The setting is superb, as the tall reeds in the water make for difficult navigation. But when a horrible accident occurs, things start to sink rather quickly.
I’m all for a story with a mysterious deadly force wrecking havoc on an unsuspecting crew. Nothing groundbreaking, but it provides one hell of a creepy story. But eventually I’d like to have some sort of halfway legitimate explanation of the evil forces–what the hell is going on here? Ghosts, demons, river bandits, dopplegangers, zombies? It seemed this film didn’t really know where to go, so it decided to go nowhere.
Plus the end was totally ridiculous. Not wanting to give anything away, but it seemed to me (and several people in the theater) to just be a bad joke on the audience.
Maybe with another attempt I’ll get more out of this film. As for now, I can only recommend it for bored horror fanatics. 2.5 stars

For French style lovers only![]()
If you are fond of linear plots in which one event leads to another and the whole leads to a more or less apparent conclusion, “Le divorce” is not likely to make much of an impression on you. It is not even one of those typical Merchant Ivory films which hark back nostalgically to Victorian England or the times of the Raj. “Le divorce” is something like a voyeur peep into the life of two families, one upper-crust French, the other high-brow American which are bound together by the couple whose marriage is drifting apart. The plot has not enough dramatic flair as to have been made into a film, if plot were the only thing to account for to define a film as a work of art, but it has plenty of charm if, like me, you are partial to Paris. For those who love French lifestyle the film will prove delicious: superb decors, shots in Café Flore, the understated stardom of a plush Hermès Kelly bag and Leslie Caron’s appearance as the embodiment of French chic and cartesian rationale…all these will appeal to you. Glenn Close is also breathtaking as ever as the American writer who after years of living in Paris has impeccably assimilated the best of both cultures. This is not a film for a rainy day and less so for people who look for entertainment of jaded senses. This is a hedonistic film for the dilettanti, the bon-vivant, to be savoured slowly like a good vintage bordeaux.

For those who do not understand French film making this movie may not be exciting but for those of us who understand this is an excellent movie that speaks to the way the French treat relationships and marriage. Some may think that it is misogynistic —far from it though it is just a very real presentation of the French way of doing things that happens to include a few american girls whose inclusion brings cultural differences into sharp focus.

I won’t speak for the book because I haven’t read it, and I’m not French. If I was French, however, I imagine that I might feel insulted. The movie seems to scream at the viewer that the French are evil, gauche, and utterly frivolous, while Americans are victims, innocent and pure. While neither can be the case, it is ridiculous to taut such views.
The characters in the movie as well as their interactions, comings and goings make no sense. No one has a reason for doing what they do or going where they go. Kate Hudson’s character falls in love with two men that she barely knows and is in no way a support to her sister whose French husband mysteriously runs off with a Russian woman. The evil French husband then does all he can to be utterly unfair to poor Roxy (his wife). He wants to take her children, her family’s painting, ie everything he can for reasons that the movie does not go into.
What bothers me more than ridiculous people doing ridiculous things for ridiculous reasons is when movie writers have cardboard cutout people do ridiculous things for reasons that are kept hidden from us. From the scene where Kate Hudson gets a strange haircut for seemingly no reason, I simply lost interest in the story.
Also, the writers were trying to elicit emotions where their wasn’t sufficient development for there to be any. Examples were the murder of the cheating husband and his girlfriend, the selling of the painting, the suicide of Roxy, the mad gun battle on the Eiffel Tower, etc. Need I go on? Save your time and your money.
