Movie is great but 2nd Disc a Disappointment
A dilemna here. I loved the movie- think the performances are just terrific. The sound and video are really top-notch and the music really enjoyable. I also enjoyed the deleted scens on the first disc and really to think this is a movie worth adding to the personal collection. The problem I have is the features added to the 2-disc collection. They just are not very good. An example- a special on the Folsom Prison concert- clearly one of the most important steps in Cash’s career. The special, though it has interesting excerpts of interviews from people who were there, does not have any footage or stills of the actual concert. I found the same to be true of the other specials on the disc as well. Lots of shots of the two stars but very little of the “Man in Black” himself. I would encourage people to buy the movie but to skip the special edition. It just is not worth the extra money, unless you really need five postcards of the stars from the film.

They Got Married In A Fever
I will preface this by saying I was never a big Johnny Cash fan, but after seeing the excellent way Hollywood handled Ray Charles (“Ray”) and Bobby Darin (“Beyond the Sea”) I was anxious to see what it would do for The Man in Black. The results are phenomenal. Now, I’m sorry I didn’t pay more attention to John and June when they were still living.

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are phenomenal as Johnny and June Carter Cash. This unlikely casting yields such outstanding results that I would hand them both the Oscar right now if I could. I read that Reese almost bailed on the project when she found out she had to do her own singing, but you would never know it from the great vocals and spunky performances she delivers.

The film focuses on their love affair, first as friends and then torrid even while he was married to his first wife and the mother of his children. His drug abuse is highlighted but it is Johnny Cash, the complex man and his love for June Carter, darling daughter of the close-knit and totally supportive Carter clan, that comes shining through and makes this a totally enjoyable movie.

Two big thumbs up for a movie that thrills from its opening at the infamous Folsom Prison to its spectatcular closing.

Hmmm. Doesn’t look like Nancy and Lee
In WALK THE LINE, Joaquin Phoenix shows that he’s come a long way since his role as the crazy Caesar in GLADIATOR.

Those going into WALK THE LINE thinking it’s a comprehensive film bio of Johnny Cash may perhaps come out slightly disappointed. While there’s a relative brief sequence of his early years growing up on an Arkansas cotton farm, an even briefer sequence of his time in the Air Force in the early 50s, the film really begins in 1955 when, failing as a door-to-door salesman and wannabe gospel singer, he cuts a rock ‘n’ roll record for Sun Studios in Memphis and his career as a CW crooner takes off. The film ends with his marriage to June Carter in 1968. In between, against the backdrop of early hits, it focuses on his failed marriage to first wife Vivian (Ginnifer Goodwin), his self-destructive abuse of amphetamines, and rocky relationship with singer/actress Carter (Reese Witherspoon), a twice-divorced single mother of two.

The real treat of WALK THE LINE is watching Phoenix and Witherspoon amaze with Oscar-caliber dramatic performances. Who would have suspected that the latter was capable of anything other than light comedy?

In case you haven’t seen the film and you’re wondering, Phoenix and Witherspoon themselves sing the Cash/Carter material; they’re surprisingly effective. Mind you, I’ve never been such a Cash fan that I’ve possessed any of his albums, and I’ve only previously downloaded one of his songs (“City of New Orleans”). Indeed, when Phoenix and Witherspoon recreate the Cash/Carter duet of “Jackson”, my first thought was: Didn’t Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood do that?

Coming out of the screening, my wife remarked that Phoenix sounded very much like Johnny himself. My response was a non-committal but prudent “Mmmm”. Back home at the computer, I downloaded a couple more Cash songs, including his “Jackson” duet with Carter. To my ears, the real Cash had a singing voice that was slightly hoarser, and with a more pronounced slow drawl than Joaquin’s version. While that doesn’t detract from the actor’s performance, it may cause purists to grumble.

The film’s opening scene is of two guards on a tower at Folsom Prison listening to the bass “thump, thump, thump” washing over the prison yard from the hall in which Cash is about to perform his famous concert before the inmates. My wife and I were sitting in the front row of the studio screening theater and the sound reverberated through our bones. I knew then that WALK THE LINE was going to be an exceptional film.

First off let me objective say, wow, everyone was just, as a straight male I can truly say this movie touched me in a procedure no other film ever has. BBM definately deserved the Best Describe Oscar, and what makes me wrathful is that I really liked Shatter, but thanks to the Academy I cant inspect it without thinking, how could they decide this over a masterpiece like Brokeback.

So most of you already know the account so I’ll converse you about how this film affected me. My girlfriend wanted to go glimpse this movie last week and I was actually fine aroused. I saw the previews and conception wow finally something unusual from Hollywood after a year stout of crap. So we went and after the movie was over there were of course people crying but I didnt know what to feel, I conception the ending sucked but the acting was gorgeous worthy.

Then I found myself thinking it over on the scramble home, and all night I dont believe I said more than two words to my family, and then as I was getting ready to go to sleep I started to skedaddle up, I called my gf and she had the accurate same reaction. Brokeback is a movie that definately touches you, not because its a overjoyed romance, but because its a heavenly parable about loneliness, savor, and what it means to be a man. I was reading a review about BBM and what it said was legal. BBM was needed because the gratified community has become a joke in this country, distinct shows like Will and Grace and Irregular Peep are out there but it unprejudiced reinforces the stereotype that all jubilant men are fashion obsessed, feminine, and silly. Well I have glad friends, and most of them are fair like me, theyre regular guys who do manly things and who impartial so happen to be attracted to other manly man because God made them that plot. BBM definately does a lot of splendid in showing a more realistic side to the contented community.

So like I said I hated the ending at first, then I went support to explore it this week because I couldnt finish thinking about it, and it was even better the second time, I realized that by ending the plot it does BBM shows the courage and strength that joyful men have to go through to near out. I found myself asking that if I were happy would I have had the courage to give up everything I ever knew to be with the person I loved. Honestly I dont know if I could, I can sympathize with Ennis because I grew up in his area, my father and mother have always preached against the sins of the world, including homosexuality, I dont know how Id ever be able to scream them if I were cheerful. Likewise almost everyone has that doubt that Ennis has, that wish that you had done something to invent you glad instead of making everyone else tickled, wheter its pursuing a relationship, career, or dream, we all have our regrets in life. What gets to me the most and what caused me to become one of those weeping audience members at the demolish of the second viewing was that Ennis does what he does in order to protect Jack, and unfortunately it kills him. I truly possess it wouldve been different had Ennis & Jack bought that ranch.

The acting is phenominal, Heath Ledger gives one of the greatest cloak preformances in history as Ennis Del Mar. Phillip Hoffman won the Oscar this year and I really liked his preformance, but Heath has so dinky to work with and yet is so heart wrenching. He’s able to express so remarkable by unprejudiced saying “Jack, I disclose” than most actors could prove in a whole film. Put A Question To this role to pop up on AFI’s list of greatest preformances sometime very soon. Michelle Williams is also a revalation, that scene where she sees Ennis and Jack kissing and essentially sees her world crashing down is so much without being showy, and Academy I have a serious complaint, Rachel Weisz, WTF? To say that her preformance was better than Michelle’s in Brokeback and Amy Adams in Junebug, you have got to be kidding me, guess being pregnant buys you some serious points doesnt it. Now as for Jake Gylenhaal, the first time I saw BBM I actually didnt understand him, he didnt seem to have any sadness at seeing Ennis go that summer except for when hes in his truck, than I realized why, he was being strong for Ennis, he was essentialy saying im your rock. Its a tough preformance that you have to peer more than once to truly indulge in but Jake nails it perfectly. Anne Hathaway as Lureen isnt really given powerful to work with, but that phone call with Ennis shows shes scheme more than fair a one sign actress.

Yes, im rambling but its because BBM touched me so worthy its hard not to praise this film. For all those giving it one stars, you obviously havent watched the movie, because its so powerful more than two guys having sex, which by the procedure probably consists of 30 seconds of mask time and almost no nudity assign for a shot of Jacks butt which if you cant handle that than how did you ever secure through the gym class locker room. Also for all those saying homosexuality is a sin, and BBM glorifies it, the characters raze up heart broken and alone, if anything its an anti-gay film, or at least would be if the scenes between Jack and Ennis didnt indicate that these two men obviously care for each other completely, and I was raised Catholic, I occupy god loves every one of us and blissful people are born that method, and I deem theyre build on this earth to stammer us what exact care for is.

Brokeback is definately an instant classic, and will go in my DVD collection upright next to Citizen Kane and Million Dollar Baby as my all time favorites. And for those who felt it got shafted at the Oscars, dont grief, Citizen Kane, the greatest movie of all time got 1 Oscar for its screenplay, theres no doubt in my mind that BBM will be remmembered far longer than Fracture, and that it will be arrangement up on the AFI’s list of the greatest movies of all time.

Love has no rules. It happens when we least quiz it, often when we don’t want it, many times when we can’t handle it. It often times scares you, surprises you, shakes you down to your very core. Ennis Del Mar (a mighty Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (an emotionally available Jake Gyllenhaal) accept themselves thrown together because of a job: forced to employ many hours together alone in the wild, tending to sheep in a remote plot of Wyoming….on Brokeback Mountain. They tumble in love: a care for that they soon realize only lives and breathes on the mountain.

It’s 1963, pre American involvement in the Vietnam War, post Korean War: a time in the USA when life was simple, straightforward and the lines between the sexes and sex roles were crisply drawn and severely delineated. It was a time when men and women were pigeon-holed into unrealistic modes of behavior and anyone who ventured outside of these boundaries was view of at best, outlandish at worst… perverted and in many states, criminal. Ennis himself, at an early age was see to the gross, disgusting results of a detest crime perpetrated on a Wyoming farmer who had lived many years with his partner. In most societies he would be venerated but in 1950′s Wyoming… he became a target.

Director Ang Lee begins this film as both Ennis and Jack are waiting outside of a building, both looking for work, both down on their luck, both avoiding each other’s eyes. We know, or those of us who have read the anecdote know, what is to happen and so unfortunately we read more into that simple scene than there really is. But with all that aside, this scene of Ennis and Jack avoiding each other, dodging each others looks, staring at the ground, kicking up the dirt is nonetheless rife with sensuality and tension.

Ennis and Jack are inexorably drawn to each other through their proximity, loneliness and through a shared lack of tenderness and emotion in their lives: they are emotionally, physically and psychically bonded almost from the launch. It is inevitable. It is Fate.

And so begins a Savor affair that transcends social mores, time, marriages, children, extra-marital affairs and divorce.

Despite all that is going on in their lives, Ennis and Jack meet several times a year up on Brokeback mountain and rekindle and thereby re-ignite their emotional and physical attraction: there is no one around, they are free from their regular lives…they can appreciate.

Much has been made of Heath Ledger’s performance as Ennis and he gives what is without a doubt one of the finest performances of this year. Ennis is a unexcited, stoic man and he is fearful and frankly apprehensive by how deeply he feels for Jack. As he showed us first in “Monster’s Ball,” Ledger is helpful of digging device deep down into his gut and imbuing his performances with an unflinching frankness and truth that we can neither ignore nor support to be moved by.

Gyllenhall’s Jack is the younger of the two: he’s fun, he’s a minute crazy and unfortunately he wants a lot, lot more than Ennis is able to give him. Gyllenhaal’s hang-dog, frisky puppy of a performance is tubby of warmth and light: the kind of transcendent light that shines out from a soul chunky of like, thought and acceptance.

“Brokeback Mountain” is devastating in both its presentation, its performances and its tragic denouement. This movie is not for everyone. But if you are willing to launch up your heart and mind a bit to let in its beauty, emotionality and sensuality you will not be disappointed. In fact… you will be renewed.

It seems that in “special” releases, Columbia and Paramount really drag late Warner Bros., which is why I hesitated somewhat from upgrading my barebones “Tootsie” DVD to this 25th Anniversary Edition. The first extras that I looked at were the deleted scenes; there are quite a few short ones here, none of which really deserved to be inserted. Some are mildly humorous, some shouldn’t have even been shot in the first status. OK, one extra down, two to go. Next I looked at Dustin Hoffman’s “cloak test.” Source material are fresh betamax tapes of Dustin first doing the Dorothy Michaels character. Although theses tests are very short, they are extremely relevatory into the talents of Hoffman. Between the time he filmed these initial test and the time that his final character was set on film, Hoffman transitioned from a awful trot queen into a believable female. Truly extraordinary to compare the two performances which are roughly 3 years apart. 2nd extra down, last one to go: “The Making Of” documentary. I had no expectations of this whatsoever; expecting a 20 itsy-bitsy assortment of clips and a shrimp narration, instead, we are treated to about an hour and a half of indepth interviews and insight into the creation of this comedy classic. There are unique interviews from Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Terri Garr, and Sydney Pollack. The only major player missing is Murray, but it doesn’t detract from the documentary. We learn that this movie is one of those wonderful occurrances where the legal creative team comes together; Hoffman is a difficult to control idea-man who definitely needs to be steered and somewhat restrained. As the Director, Pollack supplied this qualified guidance, and rather than play the movie for bawdy laughter, he went for honesty and truth. Elaine May also apparently gave the film its momentum and helped compose all of the intertwined stories that lead to the engrossing conclusion of the live Soap Opera drawl at the climax. Bill Murray and Terri Garr gave many classic improv moments, and Jessica Lange gives a very sweet and objective “straight” performance. In the interviews, Dabney Coleman tells how nobody ever laughed on the set; it was the editing of Pollack that made all the humor work, and when looking at the movie after hearing this, it is certain to study the truth in his statement. This documentary all has many behind-the-scenes clips and confrontations between Pollack and Hoffman, who pushed the director to try every possible route and questioned everything about the movie. Gargantuan gripe – why couldn’t the theatrical trailer have been attach on here? It was on the barebones previous release…surely it could have fit on this DVD, too.

For those not familiar with the space, here it is: Michael Dorsey is a talented but exasperating NYC actor (worthy like Hoffman apparently) who nobody wants to work with; he drives up budgets and is difficult to work with. Desperate for money, he disguises himself as a woman to accumulate a role on a soap opera. After he gets the role, he must retain it a secret from his girlfriend (Terri Garr), his costar Julie (Jessica Lange) with whom he has fallen for, and from Julie’s dad (Charles Durning) who has fallen for him, thinking he is a woman. The longer it continues, the harder it is to withhold juggling his life and secrets, and Michael must figure out a solution.

The film itself looks wonderful for its age in this widescreen 2:40:1 transfer in English 5.0. It is a tiny surprising that there’s no commentary track, however, the documentary covers so mighty it really isn’t all that essential. Nice job and a disappear in the factual direction, Columbia!

One of the other reviewers here comments that “Tootsie” is a movie that doesn’t collect remarkable stare anymore. I don’t know if that’s honest or not, but if it is upright, it’s a steady tragedy. In my notion, this is one of the best comedies ever made. It’s somewhere between the blatant slapstick of “The Titanic Speed” and the witty sophistication of “The Pink Panther”, and it doesn’t have a car scuttle in it, but this movie is nonstop droll from beginning to waste. There is humor in objective about every scene, and droll lines abound. Dustin Hoffman, one of the best actors of his generation, gives one of his best peformances as a tempermental actor who can’t win a job and secretly tries out for a female role on a tremendous daytime soap opera in crawl. Of course, he gets the share and becomes enormously approved, largely because he refuses to save up with the crap that other actresses attach up with. Not only is Hoffman profitable, but the rest of the cast is also outstanding. Jessica Lange got a best supporting actress oscar. The oscar for best portray should have landed here, as well. If you’ve never seen this one, do yourself a favor — win a copy and glimpse it. If you haven’t seen it in years, obtain a copy and eye it again. Either design, you won’t be sorry. This is one Hollywood’s best comedies.

No Stunts, No Wires, No CGIs, Just Actions; Just Amazing
You like Jackie Chan films? Or remember Bruce Lee? If so, don’t miss this one from Thailand, where the film industry is thriving more than ever. And remember the name of Tony Jaa, stunt-turned-actor (incidentally, he was a stunt in the second ‘Mortal Kombat’ film, and his then co-worker was Ray Park, ‘X-Men’) Jaa’s martial arts skills based on Muay Thai (Thai-style fighting) are simply astonishing.

[NO STUNTS, NO CGIs] Strangely titled film ‘Ong-bak: Thai Warrior’ is, as the title says, an exciting Thai actioner starring Tony Jaa (real name Panom Yeerum), who plays the hero Ting living in an apparently sleepy country in Thailand. Not exactly, you soon see. In this interesting opening scene, you see these scantily dressed guys climing up one big tree, and during the fighting, they fall one by one onto the ground. This is actually a kind of festival, or ritual, of the hero’s village, but what you should realize is, the film uses NO CGIs, NO WIRES ATTACHED.

[FORGET THE STORY] Story? Need one? OK, Tony Jaa’s hero has to track down the theives who cut off and stole the head of the sacred statue in his village. With this mission, he goes to town, where he meets one middle-aged man George, and his friend (perhaps girlfriend) Muay. Before you know it, they all got in troubles for the thugs start attack them.

[ACTIONS] Then, actions begin, which are simply eye-poping. One example: in the cat-and-mouse chase scene in the market, running away from the bad guys, Tony Jarr jumps over the tables, stalls, and cars (!) with Jackie’s comic timing. And look how he slides into UNDER an RV! To add to them, he leaps through a ring of barbed wires (real ones, I suppose), and comes out unharmed, never stopping a moment!

Himself a Muay Thai fighter, Tony Jaa (or his character) joins in several illegal boxing bouts. You might say you have seen this kind of bloody, bone-crunching fight sequences in the past. Not Tony Jaa’s high-kicking that strikes the opponent at the speed of lightening. This sounds like cliche, I know, but it is true, his agile movement reminds me of the deadly power of Bruce Lee and the ultra-fast speed of Jet Li.

And that’s not the end, for Jaa does many, many other actions, which I refuse to write about here, for you should see them for yourself in theatres. Again, I say, Tony Jaa uses no stunts, no special effects or no strings. Of course, he will not win the Oscar for acting the hero of this film, but when he can fight like Lee, Chan, and Li, who cares?

My advice: ‘Ong-bak’ is a must for any fans who love action films. Watch it, and be surprised.

Blunt-force Trauma as High Art
I saw this movie recently at the Acadamy Theater in Pasadena, California. I was feeling a little under the weather. There were about 20 other somber people in the theater, including my five year-old daughter who I brought with me despite my concerns about the R rating.

Suffice it to say that about thirty minutes into the movie the entire audience was visibly activated and energized by this stone-cold classic-for-eternity. My health had suddenly returned, I was pumped up on massive doses of epinephrine. Folks, this movie succeeeds on every level. I’m not a huge martial arts expert like many of the reviewers, but I was a kid in the late 60′s when Bruce Lee (and Jimi Hendrix) ruled the world, and rightly so. This is the only fighting movie which I’ve seen since which even comes close to one of the better Bruce Lee movies. I will even contend, with some reservation, that it surpasses the Bruce Lee classics: there is humour, dramatic and sophisticated tuk-tuk chase scenes, foot-chase scenes, splendidly convincing archeological sights, and obviously, absolutely SAVAGE multiple fight scenes where good defeats evil with satisfying Dirty Harry righteousness. The fight scenes in this movie are certified artistic masterpieces and deserve their own special place at the Smithsonian. And, even the soundtrack is good, with a pulsating techno-style music that really builds the tension. This movie delivers the goods.

Having been to Thailand several times and loving that country, I was very happy that this movie pays such a fitting tribute to their culture, the Thai kickboxing sport as well as the gentle and happy demeanor of the Thai people.

I should mention that by the end of the movie I had nothing but pleasure in having had my daughter watch the movie and share this unique experience. Goodness prevails over evil. Bad guys die a deserved death. Disciplined boy saves his village through courage, honor, persistence and skill. Wayward soul (Ting’s cousin who has gambling debts and other character…flaws) is reminded of his roots through observing the integrity of his friend, and he finds spiritual redemption through his efforts at becoming a good guy once again.Boy returns to village having honored his family and completed the mission…I’m afraid Sesame Street could not teach a better lesson about life and its struggles.

This movie will almost certainly become more famous as time goes on and people outside of the martial arts community learn about it. I left the theater stunned and enthralled. Just awesome.

Sizzling Martial Arts Action and Compelling Drama
From a small Thai village the statue of the revered deity Ong Bak is vandalized … his head is stolen. The film shows how the eight moves of Muay Thai are executed by Ting, the best maritial arts fighter in the village who is sent to the city to find and return this sacred object. The local priest admonishes Ting to use only peaceful means because the moves can be deadly. Ting is given money and valuables by the villagers who aresimple and poor but faithful he will succeed … He is advised to seek the help of a cousin, who lives in the city. Ting finds his cousin who is less than enthusiastic to receive a visitor from his village. The cousin is ashamed of his village roots, he has taken on an American name and has a girlfriend whom he likes to impress that he is “cool” … unfortunately, he also has a gambling habit that has gotten him into deep debt with the underworld bosses.

After the cousin stole Ting’s money and gambled it away, Ting ends up fighting goons sent by the local gangster to put fear into his cousin, essentially pay up or risk permanent injury. Ting’s fighting prowess impresses his cousin who gets the idea to have him fight at a local arena against the best fighters where betting takes place. The cousin is certain he will recoup his losses …Ting agrees on the condition afterwards his cousin will help find Ong Bak. While the story line is basic, the fighting scenes captivate and capture the viewer’s attention and hold it throughout the film.

The scenes where Tony Jaa jumps over several produce carts during a chase in the city while knives are thrown at him is astonishing. Another phenomenal scene involves a huge number of three wheeled taxis which are driven by Ting’s would-be captors as he fights them off while he is riding in a moving taxi. When they come to the end of the freeway there is an unexpected drop off … like the edge of a cliff, the freeway is under constructed and incomplete. There is an explosive ending related to the capture of the gangster boss and the *surprise* location of an unprecedented number of Buddha heads which were stolen. This DVD has great extra features, such as a live performance of martial arts by Tony Jaa on stage in Paris during the opening of his film. It also has a rap music video which incorporates phenomenal martial arts performed by Tony Jaa. Some behind the scenes footage features the creation of specific stunts within the film. Maybe it’s the combined execute of having two Jeremy Irons for the stamp of one, but I own -and Irons has been quoted to the same effect- that this is the finest work this glowing actor has commited to the mask. Powerful more deserving of the oscar than his recessive Claus Von Bulow in ‘Reversal of Fortune.’

The plan he plays the obsolete twin off the stronger one, whose influence fades when a woman comes between them, is wonderful. If you don’t mind the pervasive grimness of the yarn in general, than do yourself a favor (God, starting to sound like that pretentious guy from the Actors Studio on Bravo), and win ‘Dead Ringers.’

After creating the viscerally charged and bewildering Videodrome, Cronenberg took on a few projects with a bit more mainstream appeal: The Uninteresting Zone, The Hover, and this film: Monotonous Ringers.

It’s not honest a clever title (in fact, the movie was going to be called “Twins” until one of Cronenberg’s stale producers, Ivan Reitman, asked if he could exercise the title for a movie he was working on with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito) . The movie stars — and stars again — Jeremy Irons as twin gynecologists, Beverly and Elliot Mantle. Although they are physically identical, their personalities consume divergent paths as they grow older. Elliot grows into a confident womanizer, a sponge for the spotlight. Beverly withdraws into books, confident in cramped else other than his research.

They have a proper thing going. Elliot woos the women and whisks them off of their feet, and when he tires of them, he hands them off to his bro Bev. The ladies are, apparantly, none the wiser. None, that is, until they try the stunt on Claire Niveau. Claire is a melodramatic and needy type, who has a dependable addiction to pills, but she’s also a dazzling well-liked actress — a student of human actions — and the dissimilarity between the two men’s faces are easier to cloak from her than the differences between their hearts. It doesn’t aid matters, of course, that Beverly falls in treasure with her.

Like many Cronenberg films, a wealth of subtext buoys the state along, but in this case it’s unbiased as easy to be pleased the film even if you don’t necessarily “net” it. The surface ripples indicate two men who struggle against the divisiveness of awe and longing, how they clutch at sanity and each other as if they were the same thing. Addictions to like, to drugs, to success, and to power send them spinning around each other in mutual orbits of decay. Each tries to attach the other, but it’s like bootstrapping in quicksand. Neither has the ground to stand on.

Those who study stop enough will peruse elements of Cronenberg’s typically fetishistic influences: bizarre tools, the polar strategies of lunacy vs. logic, queer biologies (Claire has a mutation that becomes a fixation for one of the brothers) . There’s more at stake than impartial school boy crushes becoming grown man crazies. There’s also the unity of brotherly worship, salvation in sinning, and something that Beverly creepily refers to as “inner beauty.”

Most of the subtleties of the film are found in Jeremy Irons, who plays both brothers with a skill that can only be described as phenomenal. With the serve of cutting edge special effects techniques (this before the days of CGI and digital enhancement), Irons’ brothers are an amazingly convincing pair. His performances smash into dizzying, multi-facted brilliance as the area progresses, until it is sometimes hard to command which brother is which. The aesthetic sureness of his reach to the two characters is, by itself, enough to do this movie worth watching and owning.

It is also recommended, of course, by Cronenberg’s directorial talent for deifying degradation. His sharp-eyed lens is layered with images of blood-shot confusion and the clutter of offices and brains, but without a doubt it spells out something sharp, it pieces together the details of something altogether curious. Leave it up to Cronenberg (with the two-fold talent of Irons at his disposal) to mastermind a movie that gives a graceful, uplifting glory to a film that — like almost all of Cronenberg’s — slowly spirals down the gutter of despair.
