I found this movie to be BRILLIANT! Jodie Foster is outstanding in the role of Anna Leonowens – she is a beautiful mix of bravery, intelligence and Victorian elegance. Chow Yun-Fat is also outstanding in the role of King Mongkut – he emits a regal quality as well that of compassion and intelligence. The cinematography is out of this world and the directing exquisite. The dialogue is perfect, and it strikes just the right chord of polished writing. The musical score is breathtaking. The lush scenery and thick emotion is set to elegant, strong, and graceful music. It is forceful when it need be and then fades quietly into the background… at times supporting a scene with gentle rolling waves of ear pleasure. Oh and the costumes! They are completely amazing, and startling in their detail. From the majestic elephants to the smallest noble they are all cloaked in carefully chosen fabrics.

This movie in all its entirety affected me very deeply. The intense emotions of the characters are so expertly performed and directed that they feel incredibly real. These emotions, which course through “Anna and the King,” create a moving, exciting, and anticipatory experience. I am very grateful to all of those involved in the making of “Anna and the King” for producing such a beautiful and extraordinary film. Anyone who is contemplating viewing this movie… do it. I only hope that you, too will have the pleasure of being able to fully indulge in this feast for the senses.

(….) really doesn’t mention all the extra “goodies” that they’ve encluded in this Special Edition of Anna and the King, so I was thrilled to discover a good two hours of behind-the-scenes features, a trailor, music video, and more! The DVD quality is excellent, very sharp and clear, with a very well-done enter-menu feature, and deleted scenes, including an extention of the “White Elephant” sequence, and the “Prologue” and “Epilogue” scenes. The six featurettes are pretty repetative – if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all, but the interviews with Foster and Yun-Fat are pretty darn cool. All in all, a wonderful DVD from Fox… and an excellent film. If you enjoy epic romances, simple tales made exceptional by breathing romance and a passionate, gorgeous backdrop, with sets made perfect down to the tiniest detail, a film that will make you laugh, and make you cry… Anna and the King is it! The movie of the year! Don’t miss it… and don’t miss this edition!

How disappointing that this brilliant and spectacular movie was almost ignored totally at the recent Academy Awards. This version of “Anna & the King” is superb entertainment, with all it’s grandeur and spectacle that is sadly lacking in many box office hits these days. Although the musical version “The King and I” will always remain as a great classic, this one surpasses it with its dramatic content and impact. This film boasts superb photography and tight production values. The musical soundtrack is outstanding, and of course the costume designing also deserves accolades. As far as acting is concerned, why was Keith Chin as Prince Chulalonkorn not get nominated for an academy award? His performance was excellent. Of course there is much debate of Jodie Foster as the English teacher. I feel that she gave her best (as usual) in the role. Chow Yun Fat who is more renowned for his action roles is a pleasant surprise. His screen presence is dominating and was perfect as the King. This must be his most challenging role in his career, and he handled it very well, and made a very believable King Mongkut. This movie should be on the top of the list of any collector’s list. I just cannot wait for the DVD version to be released, as it deserves to be watched over and over again. Despite its box-office disappointment, I am quite certain it will gain its popularity on the Video and DVD market.

The movie picks up 8 years later where Sam is a senior in high school preparing to go to college at Princeton (that is, if she gets common) . High school isn’t exactly a tickled experience for Sam as she has only two friends. One precise, one an email friend that texts her constantly. To everyone else in the school she’s know as Diner Girl.

Home isn’t any better, as she is forced to live in the attic, do all of the chores, wait on her stepmother and sisters constantly, and work seven days a week at the diner owned by her stepmother.

Since I saw the previews of this movie I notion it looked amusing. I’ve been looking forward to it since the first preview. However, now that it’s out and I read the reviews I was nervous. Luckily my fears weren’t realized. This movie ended up being a sweet, family proper, romantic comedy. Duff does an expedient job of portraying Sam. She truly is an obedient young actress, the pep rally scene is proof of this.

While this movie wasn’t really laugh out loud droll, it was silly at times, but more than that it was sweet and, for lack of a better word, cute. The direction was really nice. It wasn’t neat artsy, but it was well done and added a determined beauty to the film.

Cinderella Myth ended up being a really sweet movie that deserves a better reaction than it recieved. Enormous acting, a clever update of an former fairy yarn, an awesome soundtrack, and a likeable cast makes for a titanic afternoon at the movies.

This is one of the cleanest films I have seen in ages! With really no language (no strong words were extinct, and no deity abuses that I caught) and minimal grunt issues, this is definitely both family-friendly and young child qualified. A few things are very mildly implied: in one instance a young man goes off with a young woman and you are not determined what they are up to (you soon earn out they were? making out? nearby) . Other than that, the only objectionable elements advance from things like sisters fighting, a limited amount of cleavage, a son going against his father? s wishes, teenagers taunting each other, some calm improper humor, and a? outrageous? stepmother who is egotistical and constantly concerned with her appearance.

The thing I liked best about this film was that it was cute and trim. It has fairy record elements, but also tries to bewitch it from a realistic slant: of course, her secret admirer turning out to be the most accepted boy in school is a bit too fairy account, but sure scenes were pulled off in such a scheme that I was nicely surprised. I? m not definite if I occupy the shroud Sam wears would really disguise her so distinguished that Austin wouldn? t peep her: maybe if he was a completely self-centered jerk, but as we are to enjoy he is a nice guy, why wouldn? t he look the girl he has gone to school with for at least all of high school?! Sam comes across as almost too unassuming and? whipped? by her stepmother at times, but I believe anyone can delight in her patience and forbearance in dealing with her difficult? family.? Sam is really that girl-next-door you like to worship.

A? tween? re-make and update of the classic Cinderella sage, A Cinderella Tale, while predictable and not entirely new, was scrumptious and a fun diversion from the everyday crush of Hollywood films. I especially appreciated (and assume you will too!) how shapely this film is: once in awhile Hollywood realizes that there are people out there who indulge in a storyline and film that have some salubrious morals and leave out the muck: this is one they finally got lawful!

And here we are, season twenty. Yes, after twelve of the previous nineteen seasons have been released on DVD, Fox decides to mess with our minds and skip ahead a few notches! And why?

Well, best guess: HD. Yes, this is the first season of “The Simpsons” to include episodes shot in HD. Not all of them are, but many are, and it makes a incompatibility!

Quality wise, this season was up there with most of the last few: mostly worthy episodes, a few huge ones and only one or two that were “meh”. I don’t generally laugh out loud at the explain anymore, but I do chuckle quite a bit and usually arrive away having had a top-notch time.

“The Burns and the Bees” – Burns tries to be an arresting and current millionare with hilarious results! Ok, they weren’t THAT hilarious, but was a worthy episode anyhow.

“Lisa the Drama Queen” – Lisa meets another girl who is rather disturbingly wrapped up in a fantasy world of her contain creation.

“Occupy My Life, Please” – Welcome to the exiciting world of HIGH DEF SIMPSONS! Honestly, I don’t remember distinguished about this episode beyond that, which is not a well-behaved trace. Apparently it involves spaghetti.

“How the Test Was Won” – Not a sizable episode, but some comical moments watching Homer deal with the fact that, for a while, the family is uninsured!

“No Loan Again, Naturally” – When the Simpsons lose their home, Flanders buys it and rents to them, with hilarious results! Easily one of the better episodes of the season.

“Gone Maggie Gone” – A reasonably ok grasp on “The da Vinci Code”-style of memoir. Not big, but ok.

“In the Name of the Grandfather” – The Simpsons visit Ireland, only to gain out that it’s not what they expected!

“Wedding for Danger” – Mix in the “Saw” movie franchise and Sideshow Bob and what do you derive? … Well, you gain this. Which is glowing trustworthy!

“Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” – Moe develops a itsy-bitsy jam in his love-life.

“The Proper, the Dark and the Drugly” – Bart falls in admire, Lisa obesses over global warming, and I lose interest. Not a unpleasant episode, but certainly not spacious.

“Father Knows Worst” – Homer becomes a helicopter parent and Marge discovers the joy of the sauna!

“Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D’oh” – Homer rents an apartment in an upscale neighborhood so the kids can befriend a better school. Guest staring Anton Chigurh as the hilarious school inspector!

“Four Astronomical Women and a Manicure” – Another anthology episode. This one is better than most, and features a astronomical bewitch on Ayn “What a hot guy!” Rand. The lowest-rated episode in the show’s history, but one I rather liked!

“Coming to Homerica” – Ogdenville experiences a massive crisis, resulting in them bringing their Norweigan ways to Springfield! Beware, America, of the ludefisk menace on your border!

The extras will probably be what we usually have with these DVDs. Question a lot of commentaries and deleted scenes, and probably something talking about the show’s transition to HD.

Overall this is a genuine season and one I explore forward to owning!

The Simpsons have been around for more than 20 years now and it`s pleasurable to say that if you ever surfed your television you came across them. It paved the intention for other spicy comedy shows of its genre, it has more than 400 episodes to its credit, won a few awards, it`s been on air since seemingly forever and there`s plenty more to say about it. There have been some complaints about the decline of the reveal ever since the beginning the 00`s. It`s hard to prefer a season where the decline really began but it is fair that the display is not as generous as it was I`ll admit it, but I believe it`s aloof splendid and I unexcited indulge in it. Since some time each season has a few astronomical episodes mixed with a few suited ones and some not-so-good one, season 20 is no different.

Now I won`t be doing an episode list because some other reviewers will hold care of that. But I really liked a few episodes like “Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” in which Moe has a recent romance, “No Loan Again, Naturally” was titanic with Ned Flanders helping the Simpsons trough difficult time as they reached bankruptcy and this season`s “Treehouse of Alarm XIX” was very noble and the allusion to Charlie Brown was smart. The worst episode of this season is perhaps the worst in the show`s history “Four Stout Women and a Manicure”, another Simpsons twist on history but this one proves to be the worst yet. The season was mostly gracious.

You will seek a change in the visual style of the explain, it is lovely remarkable the same but somehow it’s different. It features more technology which turns out to be very droll and the visual style has changed a runt it’s like the explain has gotten a facelift, and I don’t believe it distress after so many years you’re go to change at some point. You will also seek the current title sequence for the explain, I like it but I miss Homer’s sob from the novel! The Simpsons are now in HD and it looks very wonderful.I`d like to consider that the box of this season will be different than season 11 and 12`s accordion style but no one really knows now. They should really believe doing something else or return to the older boxes format I never hear anyone complain about those. I know how they want to do an eco-friendly packaging but it`s obviously not a hit with most fans, it didn`t view so valid and I didn`t like how it scratched my discs and I`m distinct I wasn`t the only one.

Season 20 is not terrible really but it fair doesn’t compare well to the earlier seasons. I don’t laugh as I mighty as I archaic to while watching the indicate but I calm net it sharp and worth watching. There were some very honorable episodes and this season was better than a few of the previous ones. I don’t know why they are releasing this one ahead of the others (13-19), yes it’s the 20th anniversary but level-headed this will compose some fans exasperated. I’ll give season 20 three stars it was a obedient season. So will I be buying? Well yes because it’s unexcited better than no Simpsons in my view and if you don’t like the reveal at this point then don’t bother with it that’s all.

That’s the whole opinion of “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian,” a friendly sequel to “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.” While it has a climax that goes on Design too long, this movie shows us the darker side of C.S. Young Prince Caspian (Ben Barnes) flees from his treacherous uncle, and is discovered by a band of Narnians. Along the contrivance, he accidentally ends up summoning the stale Kings and Queens of Narnia — also known as the Pevensie children, who were waiting at a inform space when they were unexpectedly sucked trough a tunnel.

“Prince Caspian” is definitely a darker anecdote than its predecessor — expedient guys die, coups fail, wicked machinations succeed, the castles are grimy, some of the profitable guys turn terrible for true, and a bleak, hopeless feeling suffuses considerable of the movie’s second half. Even our heroes have to deal with their doubts and infuriate, especially since Aslan is conspicuously absent for 95% of the entire film.

And if the first film was a sparkling fantasy adventure, then this one is a military chronicle with all the considerable action trappings — spectacular aerial drops, castle-wide massacres, and a spectacular finale consuming a massive pit, tree roots, a river, and catapults. But Adamson also packs in as remarkable violence as a PG-rated movie can hold — while there’s only a few drops of staunch gore, there’s plenty of beheadings, shootings and stabbings.

But Narnia itself has lost none of its charm, and Adamson lingers lovingly on the sunlit forests and collected rivers for as long as he can. And though the yarn is grim, he sprinkles it with plenty of humor (the bound-and-gagged cat) and fairly speedy dialogue. One of the most spectacular scenes involves a very familiar character speaking from inside a sheet of bright ice, as Caspian is dragged into a necromancer’s ritual. It’s really rather creepy.

Problems with the movie? Well, the climactic battle drags on for a LONG time, and every time you judge it’ll waste, it revs assist up. And those masked soldiers are a wee bit too reminiscent of “300′s” Persians.

The four Pevensie actors all do solid jobs, although William Moseley is the standout — Peter is struggling with doubt and a bit of alpha rivalry, especially since he’s primitive to being Narnia’s top dog. Barnes starts off a small stiffly — arrive on, where’s the dismay when you view your bed turned into a pincushion? — but soon grows into the difficult role of a Hamlet-like prince who is struggling to become both a Narnian friend and a Telmarine king.

But there’s a attractive bright supporting cast as well: Castellitto is simply outstanding as the ruthless, icy-cold Miraz, as are Damián Alcázar and Pierfrancesco Favino as his scheming advisors. Warwick Davis does a low-key, malevolent turn as Nikabrik, while Peter Dinklage is the likably brusque, cynical Trumpkin. And Eddie Izzard is qualified as the mousy swashbuckler Reepicheep — this could have a comic, comic-relief character, but he does ruin up being both adorable and formidable.

There are going to be two versions of the “Prince Caspian” release in either blu ray or regular versions. The more embellish DVD version basically has the film, plus an extra bonus disc with the stuff you’d inquire in such a movie: bloopers, deleted scenes, and a series of featurettes about the making of the movie — previsualization, fight choreography, sets, special effects, and the guys who play the dwarves Trumpkin and Nikabrik. As for the third disk, it’s going to be a downloadable digital version of the movie.

“Prince Caspian” drops the children’s fantasy feeling, in favor of a darker, more militaristic yarn — especially with all that father-murder stuff. But despite its darker overtones, it never forgets the light side.

In the very slim chance that Disney reads these reviews, I’d like to pile on to other criticisms in the hope that the Dawn Treader doesn’t gain the same mistakes. As a grand C.S. Lewis and Narnia fan, I was so disappointed in Caspian. Same reasons as many other reviewers: too many unnecessary liberties taken; microscopic dialogue, so very limited blueprint to connect with and like the characters; too grim; etc. At the kill of the movie, I felt like I didn’t acquire to utilize any time with the characters b/c most of the movie was some sort of battle.

Sure, there were a few gracious things. Reepicheep was great; so was the DLF. The scenery and landscapes were resplendent. Some of the battles (or parts of battles) were luscious and had a sense of honor and bravery. But that’s about it. Caspian was okay, a tiny insensible. The posturing between Peter and Caspian was droll, as was the flicker of romance between Caspian and Susan. Not enough of Aslan. Not enough of Lucy. No lessons. Nothing anywhere advance the charm of Mr. Tumnus.

You know how at the slay of some movies (agreeable ones) you have that feeling like you want more of a superb thing? You wish the movie would go on and on? (That’s why I ripped through all the Narnia books in the first station.) Well, after watching Caspian, I had a feeling of wanting more of what I knew existed in the book but didn’t advance through in the movie…it was a yearning for what could have been instead of what was delivered. It was a tall disappointment and a accurate shame. And I truly hope the Dawn Treader can state what the first movie did, and what the books all do….a sincere connection to the characters and a reason to originate thinking about what it means to occupy in something and to stand up for your beliefs. I don’t assume that opinion is incompatible with making a block-buster of a movie.

While there aren’t many stand-up comedians that I find to be terribly funny, Doug Benson’s experiment with getting high for a month straight provided many chuckles. More importantly, it provided insight on the movement to expand Medical Marijuana in California and the DEA repression they face. This film could’ve easily become a documentary on the Medical Marijuana movement, and hopefully some filmmakers will make a movie that focuses on that struggle.
Benson’s 30 days of smoking and eating herb was inspired by the 30 miserable days Morgan Spurlock spent eating fast food in Super Size Me (another film I’d highly recommend).
I especially enjoyed Benson’s visits to places like the “420 Temple”, and a trip he made to Vancouver to visit the “Prince of Pot” – Marc Emery. Emery is a former seed distributor and the editor of the excellent “Cannabis Culture” magazine (which isn’t available through Amazon, but can be found at most bookstores).

“Super High Me” also introduces us to some Medical Marijuana patients, including a young woman who first started using it at the age of 17 when she was going through her cancer treatments. It’s a crime that cannabis isn’t legally available to anyone who wants it for medicinal, spiritual, or recreational reasons. Let me start by saying that I am a proponent of both decriminalization and legalization (with regulations) so this review is not of the topic but the way it was presented. My review is basically that the topic was solid but Doug didn’t follow it through. It’s like writting a thesis paper and having a strong introduction and not enough information in the body of the paper. He could have done a lot more simply by giving more facts about marijuana and it’s use. I expected something more like Super Size Me meets Grass, and sadly this isn’t that movie.

This documentary was far more entertaining than it was educational. It really didn’t focus too much on the history of marijuana usage and didn’t analyze the prospects of future legalization (they’re dim). But being a non-Californian I really had no idea of what some of the medical dispensaries looked like before watching this video. From what I saw what’s going on there is pretty intriguing. Further, one of the reasons we should treasure federalism is because of situations like the one highlighted here (in the film) where the DEA overrides the local civic authorities and starts busting up shops. Those scenes were a disgrace. I hope people see this film and realize the necessity of decreasing the size of the federal government in the hopes of preserving all of our liberties. Politics aside, Benson’s a funny comedian and a lot of the standup shtick was enjoyable.

On a whole number of levels, this movie shouldn’t have worked for me. It takes considerable license with historical facts, not only in order to supplement details that are not part of William Wallace’s legend but actually, wherever convenient. (“We stuck to history where we could but hyped it up where the legend let us,” actor-director Mel Gibson admits on the DVD’s commentary track.) It is graphically and unabashedly violent: from throat cuttings to battle scenes that have film blood literally splashing onto the camera, beheadings, a traitor’s head smashed with a
wrecking ball, and fully 15 minutes of Wallace’s “purification by pain,” it shows some of the most brutal behavior conceivable. It also engages in some of the most blatant gay profiling in recent film history – not just in the drastic end administered on the lover of King Edward I. “Longshanks”‘s son, but equally in the portrayal of both characters and their relationship as such. Last but not least, Mel Gibson plays a man at least 10 years younger than himself, a choice often enough bordering on the ridiculous. (Gibson insists it was the studio’s wish that he not only produce and direct but also star in the title role.)

And yet …

From the first notes of James Horner’s hauntingly beautiful soundtrack and the first sweeping camera shots over the Scottish highlands, blending seamlessly into the pictures of the Scottish riders on their way to the alleged truce talks initiated by Longshanks, and the narrator’s, Robert the Bruce’s (Angus MacFadyen’s) introduction – “I shall tell you about William Wallace: Historians from England will call me a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes” – there is no mistaking that this is an epic story, taking up the tradition of the likes of “Spartacus” and “Ben Hur.” Like those movies, “Braveheart” is a story of heroism and of having the courage of one’s convictions; chronicling the life of its hero from first love to loss, betrayal, battles and final confrontation with his arch-enemy’s powers. Like both of them, “Braveheart” won multiple Academy Awards, not least for John Toll’s outstanding cinematography. Like “Ben Hur,” it also won the coveted awards for “Best Picture” and for “Best Director.” And maybe I’m just a sucker for that kind of epos …

To my surprise, I found Mel Gibson to come across very believable as William Wallace; age difference, Scottish brogue and all. Both his acting and his direction are informed by a clear sense of vision for the movie and its title character. Moreover, although full writing credits went to would-be (?) Wallace descendant Randall W., many little details undeniably show Gibson’s hand and mannerisms: to name just a few of the more obvious examples, Wallace’s marriage proposal to Murron, his grinning greeting of a group of English soldiers trapped below a cliff, and his response to a doubting Scottish soldier’s comment at Sterling that he can’t really be Wallace because he’s not tall enough.

In addition to John Toll’s award winning cinematography, the movie benefits from first-rate production design (Tom Sanders), a score which perfectly captures the mood of every single scene, and a cast of outstanding actors; first and foremost Patrick McGoohan as Longshanks, who portrays the king’s utter ruthlessness so convincingly that you completely forget his earlier incarnation as the 1960s’ “Danger Man,” and who delivers monologues and soliloquies worthy of a Shakespearean king. His musing “but whom shall I send” when plotting to send a messenger to Wallace with another insincere offer of truce, and his chilling announcement of the reinstitution the ius primae noctae because “the trouble with Scotland is that it is full of Scots … If we can’t get them out, we’ll breed them out” could have been uttered verbatim by anyone of the Bard’s most sinister kings. (Screenwriter Randall Wallace does indeed admit to Shakespeare’s direct influence on the script, particularly on Wallace’s “Sons of Scotland” speech before the battle of Sterling, which is strongly based on the monologues of King Henry V. at Agincourt).

Equally impressive is Ian Bannen in one of his last roles, starring as Robert the Bruce’s leprosy-ridden father and evil spirit, whose first reaction to the tales about Wallace is to deride him (“He has courage; so does a dog”), and who expertly plays on his son’s ambivalent feelings, until he finally drives Robert into hating his father for having coaxed him into his own game of scheming and betrayal – whereupon the elder Bruce drily comments: “At last you have learned what it means to hate. Now you are ready to be a king.”

Then-newcomer Catherine McCormack stars as Wallace’s childhood love Murron, whose scenes with Wallace provide for much-needed tenderness in the first hour of the movie – particularly touching is four year old Murron’s gift of a thistle (Scotland’s national flower) to orphaned William – and contrast sharply with the bloodshed that follows virtually incessantly from her death onwards. Sophie Marceau matures from teenage party queen (“La Boum”) to French Princess Isabelle; Brendan Gleeson stars as Wallace’s boyhood friend Hamish, David O’Hara as his heaven-conversing, self-appointed Irish guardian Stephen – one of the movie’s most colorful characters – and Brian Cox brings all his extraordinary screen presence to his brief appearance as Wallace’s uncle Argyle.

When I left the theater after having witnessed this movie’s almost three hours of blood, gore and intense emotions for the first time, I felt as if somebody had given me a fist punch into my stomach. I was so struck that I was almost unable to speak, and dragged my moviegoing companion into the next bar, to revive my spirits with a glass of whiskey. (Scotch, of course). Having seen the film countless times since then, I no longer need that whiskey to overcome its drastic impact – but I still get gooseflesh during many of its key scenes and can’t watch it without feeling emotionally drained at the end.

“Braveheart” is quite simply, one of the best and most successful movies ever created and a huge part of that success comes from the efforts extended by Mel Gibson, as he wore three different hats for this masterpiece, those being producer, director and star. The one oddity about this movie for me was that I pretty much wore out my VHS copy of it and had, a couple years ago, purchased the DVD but only just recently took the opportunity to watch it again and no matter how many times you watch this movie, it is still a stunning, compelling and extraordinarily intriguing film that draws you in to the life of William Wallace despite already knowing how it’s going to end.

The one thing that drives this movie is the spirit that Mel Gibson puts into his character of William Wallace and it is of no surprise that “Braveheart” won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1995 and Best Director for Mel Gibson. The only true surprise was that he wasn’t among the top five nominated for or won the Best Actor award.

High praise also goes to the long list of supporting actors and actresses that starred in this superb film! Most notable was the performance by Sophie Marceau, one of the most beautiful women on the planet. Patrick McGoohan was absolutely incredible in the role of the villain Longshanks, King Edward I, delivering a memorable performance.

One of the most notable performances in this film, among the many, was the work done by James Horner who was responsible for the score. As is normally the case when his name appears in the credits, everything about the score, from the first reel to the last, is incredibly well blended into the movie and serves extremely well in enhancing the experience of the movie.

The Premise:

As the old saying goes, is it Hollywood or History? The truth is, of course it’s a bit of history, put together Hollywood style to make one of the best films ever presented to an audience. The truth behind it is that we’ll never know as recorded history from this era is circumspect as best. Where a huge portion of the credit for this film lays is in the hands of Randall Wallace, a descendant of William Wallace’s.

As this historic film opens, we see a young William Wallace in Scotland as he’s learning the harsh lessons of life in his era. After his family is killed in battle he’s fortunate enough to have his Uncle Argyle (played brilliantly by Brian Cox) take him under his wing! Several years later he returns home to find that his countrymen are still suffering under the yoke of English oppression but he didn’t come home for that, he came home for Murron MacClannough (Catherine McCormack), seeking her hand in marriage. Unfortunate events unfold from there and William loses the love of his life and goes on a rampage not only to avenge his love but to free his country…

What follows from there is not only one of the best films of the nineties but one of the best films of all times. I highly recommend “Braveheart” to any and all who are interested in seeing what true movie making is about! {ssintrepid}

In order to maintain the appearence of objectivity, I was going to rate this movie 4 stars. But I just couldn’t. It really deserves 5, and it’s going to get every one of them. This movie features some of the most stunning cinematography I’ve ever seen (scenes of particular brilliance include the deer-hunting scene and the slo-mo shots right before Gibson’s first rebellion), impeccable acting (I don’t know why the British have been hiding their actors from the American film industry – every one of the British/Scottish actors in the film was amazing, and Patrick McGoohan (sp) gave an incredible performance as Longshanks, not to mention newcomer Sophie Marceau), a magical musical score, and on and on and on and on. Physical elements alone qualify this work for the title of Best Picture.

Yet, a number of people chastise Gibson and the movie for a number of reasons, primarily its departure from historical accuracy. I do believe these people have missed the point, for I do not believe it is fair to criticise a movie for failing to realize a goal for which it never really strived. I wonder: do these same people criticize Homer’s “The Odyssey”? Do historical hardbodies cast aspersions at T.H. White’s “Once and Future King” for taking historical liberties with “King” Arthur? (For that manner, any of the hundreds of contributions to the Arthurian legend). What about Robin Hood? Beowulf? Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Why is it copacetic for a book to create a myth around a cultural hero, but when it comes to film we must be expected to be as straightlaced about historical fact as an army bootcamp is about bedmaking and floor cleaning?

I have read a lot of reviews below and a number of criticisers of the film’s historical authenticity spit out the word “epic” as if it is a word that the American film industry has abused and transmogrified into a catchphrase for luring in gullible American movie-goers. But I argue that Braveheart, and the historical inaccuracies which it adopts (and it adopts many, which are nicely pointed out elsewhere), fit the same formula for “Epic Fiction” that we use to classify great (and I mean, universally accepted as great) epic works of fiction such as the Iliad, the Odyssey, etc. These works are not about who did what where and when and in what fashion. They are about the myth, the hero, and the way that they have influenced the ideals of the culture (italicize that). Was there really a Grendel, a Cyclops shepherd, a Wizard named Merlin, or Chinese war heroes who could single-handedly take on a small army? No. And yet, these works of fiction (and the mythological heroes that they have created) have had as much if not more of an impact on their respective cultures than any real life historical event. The impact of the epic is therefore not to be underestimated. Does the fact that Gibson portrayed the battle of Sterling Bridge without a Bridge really make that much of a differnce? The end outcome was the same, at least from an idealogical point of view. He rallied his men to victory with brilliant tactics against insurmountable odds. The presence or absence of a bridge, naked men, or twenty foot spears does not change that. The myth survives.

Finally, regarding historical accuracy, there is the fact that although the movie does take a lot of liberties in order to portray a THEME – I am intelligent enough to suspend my disbelief during the movie. Furthermore, after the movie is over, (and this is a credit to the movie-maker) I was intrigued enough to go do some research on the subject from an objective historical source to find out what really happened. If a work of art (which is not, I remind you, required to be objective – artistic objectivity is almost an oxymoron and film should not be treated differently in this regard than any other form of art) instills in me a desire to learn more about a subject while at the same time portraying well the epic themes it sets out to portray, then in my book it was a successful venture and worthy of all the accolades it receives….Again, this is an epic, and just as a Greek epic might portray the Trojans as ruthless savages and their own members as heroic visionaries, I think it is acceptable for a Scottish epic to do the same to the British. And calling Gibson a homophobic is just ridiculous. Whether or not Edward II was really gay is not important. If he was, then BY THE STANDARDS OF THE DAY, he was an outcast, and would have been perceived, especially by his father, as weak, without potential, and unfit to rule. If he wasn’t gay, but was just disinterested in ruling a kingdom (and history is filled to the brim with examples of less than sterling royal progeny), he would have again been seen (especially by his father) as weak, without potential and unfit to rule (because fathers – especially kings – have expectations of their sons), and questions about his sexuality would have naturally begun to arise among the nobility and commonfolk. What we as viewers of a historical or epic piece of artwork must do is refrain from judging said work by our standards. Today, homosexuality is (for the most part) accepted by society. Back then, it wasn’t, and the mere rumor was enough to get you rejected from society (and vice-versa). Therefore, in light of the times in which the movie is set, the portrayal of the weak fop of a prince, EdwardII, as homosexual is both acceptable and indicative of the society that the movie was trying to portray. It wouldn’t, for example, have made much sense to portray Edward I as gay. Not because a gay man couldn’t be a successful King or military leader, but because a gay man would never have achieved respect as a monarch – THEN – by the people or his enemy.

In closing, this is an excellent film that deserves its status as a best picture, despite (and perhaps because of) its historical inaccuracies. I encourage anyone with any interest in medieval history to view it, because it might just entice you to look into more historically accurate documents that, while not as entertaining as the movie iteself, will give you a more wholistic picture of what really happened.

This thirteen section Masterpiece Theatre series, which first aired in 1979, is certainly worth watching as it is quite piquant and well done. Detailing the life and loves of the illustrious Lillie Langtry, the Victorian era superstar, it gives the viewer a taste of an era gone by. beautifully acted by a stellar cast, the production suffers only from the depressed lighting dilapidated in the nineteen seventies, giving the sets and actors a somewhat washed out and flat appearance. That being said, it is smooth a series well worth watching.

Born on the British isle of Jersey to a womanizing clergyman and his wife, Lillie grew up as a tomboy with a rare beauty. At an early age, she marries Edward Langtry, a purportedly wealthy yachtsman from a shipping family, who takes her to live in Southampton. There, she finds life not to her liking. She soon discovers that her husband has sold her a bill of goods, as his wealth has been spent. After a bout with a serious illness, she contrives a proceed to London, where she is exposed to a taste of high society. After a fallacious open, she gets noticed by the local swells and becomes a distinguished beauty, sought after by all. Now, a fashionable society woman, she finds herself with her name on everyone’s lips. Lillie eventually comes to the attention of the married Prince of Wales and becomes his mistress.

Trapped in her loveless marriage with the hapless and alcoholic Edward Langtry, Lillie goes on to have numerous fancy affairs with some of the most socially prominent and wealthy men of her day and eventually has a care for child. Courted by all, her beauty and need for money brings her to the stage, where she becomes an actress with her occupy company. Her fame by now has spanned the ocean and made her a celebrity in America, as well as in Europe.

Lillie certainly knew the value of marketing, as she endorsed numerous products with her name. A woman ahead of her time, who marched to the beat of her possess drum, she mild went to gargantuan trouble to avoid scandal, though it was never far from her doorstep. Alas, in the ruin, her fame and beauty decimated by age, her lovers slow or gone, Lillie, no longer the toast of two continents, ends up nothing more than a lonely dilapidated lady.

The cast for this production is stellar and the costumes are first rate. Francesca Annis is dazzling and certainly gives a competent performance as the famous Lillie. Though her performance is acclaimed, however, the viewer cannot serve but wonder why such a fuss was ever made over Lillie, as she comes across as supremely shallow and vapid. I attribute this to the fact that Ms. Annis’ portrayal of Lillie comes across as being rather flat, failing to do her a truly likable character. Peter Egan, on the other hand, is kindly as Oscar Wilde and, as far as I am concerned, steals the explain. Filled with considerable social intrigue and witty repartee, the series will maintain the viewer riveted to the cover.

This four disc DVD is well done with splendid visuals and clarity of sound. It does not offer powerful by method of bonus features, but with such a lengthy production, who cares. All in all, this is a very exquisite and interesting series that will provide the viewer with hours of viewing pleasure. Those who like period pieces and historical dramas will most certainly savor this one.

The fantasy anime “Moribito: Guardian of The Spirit” is based on the unusual by Nahoko Uehashi. Although I did not read the current Japanese version of the book, nor did I study the series in Japanese as Karen Weiss did, I have been following it since it’s TV debut here in the USA on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim (currently playing as fragment of the Saturday Night lineup, although it airs at 5:30am on Sunday mornings as of the date of this writing on October 27, 2008) . I must say that so far, I agree with everything Karen wrote.

This is a truly spectacular fraction of artwork that will feed your soul. The legend (written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama) takes plot in an unspecified country at a time when the Emperor was understanding of as a God to his people, and so HONOR for the Imperial throne is paramount. The Emperor must do whatever it takes to protect his people and avoid any appearance of being connected with harmful.

The legend opens with the land in a period of drought, and the Emperor and his court of Star Readers are working feverishly to come by a arrangement to extinguish the drought before it gets any worse and people originate to starve. And we learn that an Emperor is allowed to have multiple wives to be clear he can continue the family lineage. Each Empress and family, however, are housed in separate palaces of their enjoy. The second Empress, in the second palace, has two sons, Crown Prince Zaku and Crown Prince Chagum. Prince Chagum is the younger one, and he has been having bad nightmares. The Star Readers attribute Prince Chagum’s nightmares to an Atrocious Water Demon possessing him.

Having a member of his royal family possessed by a Water Demon would bring shame on the Emperor. And more importantly, a Water Demon would certainly be the cause of the drought. And this was completely unacceptable in these times. But they could not unprejudiced “slay” a Crown Prince, or people might ask questions and learn of the Water Demon.

And so the storyline goes like this: To preserve his honor intact and to extinguish the drought, the Emperor orders that his son (Crown Prince Chagum) be killed in an “accident” so no one would learn of the Water Demon drawl. But after a few close-call accidents, the last of which an outsider from another land, Balsa the Spear wielding Bodyguard (our heroin), saves Prince Chagum. And it is at this point that Prince Chagum’s mother, smart that her son is marked for death by his occupy father, calls upon this outsider from their land who has already saved her son once. After determining Balsa is not honest a bodyguard out to compose money but a women of just honor, the Empress asks Balsa to prefer Prince Chagum and protect him for the rest of his life. They residence a fire in the Prince’s bed chamber to throw off suspicion.

But with no body, the fire doesn’t fool anybody and the Emperor’s court learns of the existence of the female spear wielding bodyguard and they suspect she has taken off with the Prince. A trek and some bloody battles ensue where we seek Balsa’s proper nature, meet many of her friends and ally’s, and learn more about the other characters that surrounded the Prince, the court and Balsa. With assist, Balsa intends on helping Prince Chagum rid himself of the demon, but I won’t order you more or I would spoil the sage.

The characters are well developed and the narrate acting is very gracious. The music is upbeat (the opening theme is “SHINE”, sung by L’Arc-en-Ciel, and this one is completely in English for the American audience) and the landscapes and scenery are breathtaking to glance. This is a mammoth memoir, and it is really nice change to sight an anime where a woman is the strongest character of the series.

I am looking forward to the complete DVD release here in America with gigantic anticipation, as this is another one I want to add to my diverse collection.

Balsa, a female bodyguard for hire, saves young Prince Chagum from what appears to be a infamous accident. When it’s revealed that the boy is possessed by a demon, and that his father, the Emperor, is trying to rid himself of the boy before his condition becomes known and undermines the divine Imperial authority, Balsa is tasked with Chagum’s protection by the boy’s mother, the Second Empress. She goes on the race to assign Chagum’s life, while enlisting the relieve of two shamans to peek how to cure Chagum before it’s too unhurried…

Nothing is quite as it seems, and even the “poor guys” are acting from valid motivations, as it seems that the demon inside of Chagum may cause a snide drought to plunge over the kingdom, killing thousands in thirst and famine.

Gorgeous artwork, unbelievable music, and well-rounded characters–”Serei no Moribito” is a delight from launch to triumphant accomplish. After having watched this series during its initial broadcast rush on Japanese TV, I can honestly say that this is the most pretty, well-characterized, well-written, and emotionally satisfying anime series I’ve ever seen. I’m eagerly awaiting the North American release on DVD, so I can add this one to my “keeper shelf.”
