Akihabara Geeks is a short documentary film that takes a discover at a day in the life of a few inhabitants of the neighborhood in Tokyo known as “Electric Town” which is the center of life for a lot of electronics, anime, and manga enthusiasts, which the narrator describes as “geeks and fanatics”. The film alternates between 4 or 5 different Akibans with different interests and lifestyles. We follow one otaku who is obsessed with cute anime girls and plasters the walls of his limited room with their posters and merchandise. He spends so mighty on his “hobby” that his average amount of money available for food each day is about five dollars! You might reflect this guy is strange or disturbing but later on in the film, his obsession is explained and you are able to understand him a bit better. For people keen in computers and videogames, Akihabara focuses on one man who is trying to gain the world’s fastest computer processor, called “overclocking”. Then there is a exciting scrutinize at how some people execute computer games independently of any tall company and are able to sale around 100,000 copies and do quite well for themselves. Interviews with an employee of a maid cafe who is also a fulltime law student gives insight into why some women work in such places. This dvd was very delightful to me, because there are not that many dvds that give real-life tours of places of interest to people like me that are alive to in the anime and manga sides of Japan and Tokyo. One thing I did not like about this point to was that the narrator constantly refers to its subjects as “geeks and fanatics”, which on the one hand makes me visualize nerds, and on the other, Islamic fundamentalists. It seems a exact insult for the writers to discover down upon the very people they investigating. After finishing the film, I didn’t reflect any of the people in it were very different than you and me. Even the guy that was twisted on anime girls had his contain very personal reasons for his passion, related to a dusky period in his past. The maid girl too, joined the maid cafe because when she first got to Tokyo, it was a plot where she felt comfortable and delighted, so she wanted to disclose that feeling to others. In the ruin, I consider all of the Akibans shown were fair passionate about what they are alive to in, whether its computers, videogames, anime, serving others, or running a family business. Another complaint I have about his dvd was that it was too short, running about 45 minutes. I wanted to ogle more of the town and would have enjoyed more time in the anime and manga stores. If you are an otaku, or honest alive to in Japan, you should like this.

And its not honest about pop culture, it brings you along on a brief day-in-the life tour of shop owners, workers, anime enthuiasts, and game designers.

Well, you glean a gawk at the lives of about 4 people actually. But its allmost like a japanese reality tv program, but i guess it is powerful more fitting to call it a documentary.

It has pleasurable humor, i must say. I laughed out a loud at many parts.

Its even kinda touching in ways, becouse we gaze that stuff like anime, for instance, has such a strong influence on one young man’s life.

Also, the dedicated shop owner of a electronic parts store was keen.

We also view a designer of a very approved online game in japan.

And theres a man who builds computers and trys to top and smash his processing run portray. Which the documentary claims holds the narrate for fasted computer built.

Plus, we gain to meet a girl who dresses up in costumers at a resturant, who conventional to be very alarmed and not many friends, but the job has helped her not be alone anymore.

Its a fun dvd, and sorta kinda captivating in a diagram, to recognize the lives of people in japan who accept meaning and worth in life through what theyve near to admire. I didnt ask that at all really.

I expected a hyper active insanly colorfull display on extremly fanatical anime and cosplay people in japan, but it ended up to be so powerful more than that, and has some depth.

I care for finding these movies, becouse i havent gone to japan and i so very noteworthy wish to go, and this is heavenly powerful all i have to glance into a country and a culture ive loved for a long time.

Its 45 minutes long, and though i view that would be too short, it ended up that it seemed to be unprejudiced the proper length. Regardless though, i wish i could search for more of stuff like this. I want another dvd by these people, i wanna ogle more, i would savor a allotment 2.

If you appreciate japanese culture and appreciate the anime lifestyle and dream of someday going to japan or even living there…this is one of the few resources i have seen out there that gave me a observe into anything regarding japanese day to day life…. so if you treasure this stuff…its definatly worth getting.

I want more japanese documentaries like this. I hope AnimeWorks plans more volumes of this.

Lastly, i mediate people who have ever found inspiration or influence through anime, through out life, will portray to this dvd. And dont forget, its laughable aswell. So, have fun watching it. Its a dinky fancy.

Popoton is about 4 women (3 sisters and a maid) with unique magical powers who recede around to different areas looking for Popotons (tonpopo’s actually, which is the Japanese word for Dandelions) . There is definitely something weird about the 4; they seem to have magical powers (for instance, Ai can talk to flowers), and what happens at the kill of every episode is the house they live in takes flight, elegant powerful in the same manner as the dandelion spores, as they disappear on their procedure to the next spot.

Each episode is a self contained account which usually involves them helping someone who has problems. The first episode is a boy who is trying to attend a girl in his class expose ghosts are loyal. The second is actually assisting one of the women in the house, Mai, as she hates the feeling she gets when she moves from state to spot and loses the friends she’s made along the contrivance. The third involves a slight girl sick in the hospital who can’t go outside or leave the hospital due to her illness. The fourth episode is a shrimp girl who is alone (I can’t say anymore as to avoid spoilers) .

Animation is high quality stuff (for a TV series anyway) . Japanese express acting is region on and the present is objective a lot of fun to search for.

Mii is played by Momoi Haruko, or… better known as Komugi from Nurse Witch Komugi and The Soul Taker. The character she plays resembles Komugi, actually. They even give her an episode where she Cosplays as a magical girl.

There are also plenty of bare breasts and other various fan service related bits to be found.

What surprises me is the 16 and up rating. I guess it’s for the bare breasts, and the bare breasts aren’t REALLY shown in a lewd/perverted manner, at least not in my plan. Other than that, this demonstrate is definitely aimed at a great range of folks, I mean, I deem I’d be hard pressed to come by a young kid who couldn’t bask in the themes in the display. It’s a light hearted note with warm and caring characters… with some bare breasts thrown at you from time to time.

So Popoton gets a high recommendation from me. However, if you don’t like cute shows, finish contrivance.

Not since “Chobits” has there been an anime elephantine of human heart and spirit…so “Popotan” is a breath of new air for those who want more emotion than action or violence.

As mighty anime as I glimpse, this is one of the most creative ones I have approach across in a while. The main sage revolves around 3 sisters who piece a source of magic, one of them which commuicates with dandelions (or ‘popotans’ in this case) . Does it sound fluffy?? You bet cha! But I loved it anyway.

The reason this shiny runt anime works is because it takes steady human emotion, tugs at the heart strings, and gives you a sense of well being within its sage yelp.

Sadly, this anime really should be for the 12 and up crowd – but parents will want to near with caution and purchase brand of the 16 and up rating, because some amounts of nudity are exhibit..and it does not camouflage it very well – nor would it want to. It presents itself as a “free attractive” animation, but never is vile or offensive in any draw. The nudity only adds more for comedic moments.

I certainly hope some parents will allow their children to plan this series. Not only can the young ones learn something about human life – but it will also back out older viewers in trying to ‘understand’ it…and I can’t say that about any other anime out there.

Great stuff made with tender loving care! Don’t miss it.

I’ve got to hand it to Roger Corman for this one; Wasp Woman is a pleasing darn agreeable movie (albeit with vintage Corman-esque not so special effects) . The film starts off with a whimper, giving us a listless view at bee farming before introducing us to Dr. Zinthrop, who is promptly fired for wasting his time experimenting with wasps. Then we are taken to the boardroom of Janice Starlin Enterprises, a cosmetics company facing lean times because the face that has always sold the product, that of Janice herself, is not as young as it passe to be. Enter Dr. Zinthrop and his incredible anecdote of restoring youth with a wonder-working extract taken from queen wasps. After he turns two obsolete rabbits into young bunnies before her eyes, Janice believes him and insists that she will be his first human test subject. The rest of the company bigshots are increasingly concerned by the secrecy around Zinthrop’s work, but even they cannot say the unusual youthful face of their leader (accomplished mainly by taking away her broken-down maid glasses and having her smile more often) . Unfortunately, Janice secretly injected herself with the experimental, considerable more concentrated extract in order to run the process, and terrible Zinthrop gets bustle over by a car before he can warn her of its rather disturbing side effects. Thus, we are left with several Starling associates trying to earn out what is really going on. They mediate Janice is in worry, but in fact they are the ones in effort. Janice’s headaches are indicative of a worthy more important problem; from time to time, she turns into a giant wasp who is less than civil to her underlings.

The whole wasp woman getup is graceful ridiculous-looking, but one can peruse past such comical special effects and like the movie for the fun, B-movie classic it is. The acting is unusually fine for a Corman movie, and Susan Cabot particularly shines as Janice Starling. I’ve seen a number of Roger Corman movies, and this 1960 offering is by far the best of the bunch as far as I am concerned.

From Roger Corman, one of the most prolific director/producers in Hollywood, comes The Wasp Woman (1960), a film that was most probably influenced by 1958′s The Soar, with Vincent Mark. Hey, if Hollywood can turn a man into a soar, why not turn a woman into a wasp? Well, no one ever accused Corman of originality.

The movie opens up with a scientist getting fired from a company the produces honey as he is doing some exclusive experimentation. Seems the Scientist, Eric Zinthrop, played by Michael Note, has been exploring the belief of using royal jelly to compose a rejuvenation formula. After getting fired, Zinthrop contacts Janice Starlin, played by Susan Cabot, the head of Starlin Cosmetics. Starlin Cosmetics is losing sales due to the fact that Ms. Starlin was the only spokesperson for the cosmetics, and now that she is aging, sales are falling off. After talking to Zinthrop and seeing his success on turning abet time with various animals, she hires him on, sets him up in a lab, and they start treatments on her. The process appears to be working, but Ms. Starlin becomes impatient, wanting more results quicker, so she secretly starts injecting herself with the formula. What happens? Choose a guess…I mean, the movie is titled The Wasp Woman.

The acting wasn’t unpleasant, but we didn’t even study the wasp woman until almost an hour into this rather talky feature. There are some bloody deaths, and the invent up to beget the wasp woman isn’t all that awful, but the movie would have benefited from not making us wait so long in seeing the creature, filling up the 73 miniature bustle time with nonsensical space threads that don’t earn.

Alpha Video provides an exceptionally unpleasant print here, as the film has all kinds of blemishes and even drops out briefly at a couple of points. The recount appears washed out, and the audio is fine unpleasant. No special features here in this barebones release, not even a trailer, but for under ten bucks I wasn’t expecting powerful. Now that I’ve experienced the quality of Alpha Video, I doubt I will capture any more of their releases. I would recommend someone eager in owning this movie on DVD to do a small research, as I have since found out a number of companies have released a version, some even on double bills with other movies. I will say the screen art on the Alpha Video release looks enticing, but, as with most things in life, you fetch what you pay for here.

Although microscopic known today, in her believe era author Fannie Hurst was among America’s most famed authors, a writer who frequently challenged the region quo in both her life and her literature. Among her most approved works was the original IMITATION OF LIFE, which first came to the veil starring Claudette Colbert and Louise Beavers in 1934. Today both the unique and film would be considered somewhat racist–but at the time both were considered social shockers, dealing frankly with single mothers, rebellious daughters, and racial issues in a diagram that few novels and fewer unexcited films of the era dared.

The first film version was as faithful to the new as it dared be, telling the anecdote of two single mothers–one dusky, one white–who join forces and hit the broad time when the white woman successfully markets the shaded woman’s pancake recipe. But the 1959 film version substituted pancake make-up for pancake batter: the white woman is an actress, and with her dusky friend tedious her she climbs the ladder to Broadway stardom. Director Douglas Sirk was reknowned for his ability with this sort of material, and although he did better films IMITATION OF LIFE is perhaps his most definite stylistic statement: gallons of gloss, more soap suds than a sink fat of dishes, and enough improper melodrama to fuel a thousand 1950s schoolgirl dreams.

This time around our stars are Lana Turner and Juanita Moore, supported by Sandra Dee and Susan Kohner as the respective and rebellious daughters who create their mothers lives a living hell, with Lana’s daughter Sandra falling in fancy with her mother’s beau and Juanita’s daughter Susan obvious to defeat the racist society in which she lives by passing for white. All four actresses give it everything they’ve got, which means they all emote to the nth degree as they suffer through every emotional upheaval the screenwriters can devise.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Imitation of Life! Click Here

Turner and Dee are essentially Turner and Dee. The loyal surprises here are Moore and Kohner. Saddled with a record that collected keeps the dim woman in the kitchen while the white woman plays, Moore nonetheless gives an outstanding and ultimately heartbreaking performance, and Kohner matches her every bit of the plan as the wayward daughter who makes one terrible choice after another in her refusal to knuckle under to a repressive society. It is a gargantuan pity that neither actress went on to equally high-profile roles and films, but the times were against them–as the very nature of the film’s record should fabricate abundantly sure.

The recent unusual and film were actually advanced for their time, but by the time this version hit the cover the “white lady upstairs and the dark lady downstairs” was hardly a rung up the ladder. Even in 1959 many denounced the film as perpetuating racial stereotypes and class-thinking, and by today’s standards it is alternately distasteful and absurd. But oddly enough, that fact doesn’t undercut the unbelievable watchablity of the film. We may sneer at some of the values it presents, but it holds our attention all the diagram, and you’ll need at least three hankies for the film’s conclusion. If you are torn between purchasing the DVD or a VHS version, you should know that there is actually itsy-bitsy incompatibility between the two. The film has not been restored for DVD, and the lack of restoration is quite noticeable; moreover, the only bonus material on the DVD is the theatrical trailer. You might retract to go with a obscene cost VHS until a really friendly DVD is released.

Imitation of Life is a movie that had perfect timing in the changing world of 1950′s Americana.

The oppression of lawful segregation had taken its toll and a prime example of this burnout is Susan Kohner’s Sara Jane. This character had the perfect mother, but society told Sara Jane at a very young age that her mother would NEVER be sterling enough because of her gloomy skin color. Sara Jane chafes at the limitations society places on her. She doesn’t want to be associated with maids, chauffeurs or going through attend doors. She wants more, and as a `white woman’ she can collect it. Many viewers who contemplate this film will be inflamed at Sara Jane, however, one must remember that ‘black’ was not yet resplendent, and this is the pre-civil rights era.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Imitation of Life! Click Here

Lana Turner’s Laura Meredith asks Sara Jane, `have I ever treated you differently? ‘ The movie makes this reply abundantly positive although Sara Jane answers `no.’ The audience sees Turner’s pigeonholing of Sara Jane and Annie. Even after years of living together – she actually says to Annie, `I didn’t know that you had any friends.’

Laura Meredith is a character that represents society as a whole in this film. She is the approved hurry and therefore, pleasantly clueless about matters that doesn’t affect her, while aiming for and achieving her dreams. Through the passage of time Laura becomes rich, successful, and a star – and for Annie, well, she remains the maid.

The DVD of this movie is extremely dreadful. The transfer is down proper dirty in one scene and grainy throughout the film. There is one scene where Sara Jane is running down the stairs and she freezes in action. Universal didn’t even care enough about the viewer to achieve this current play-pause in a point where it would be seamless. This is a classic film that has been given anything but classic attention – extremely sloppy work from Universal.

This is a nice release of the Martian Successor Nadesico TV anime series in a compact cardboard box. Unlike most of the ADV thinpak releases, this one actually contains some extras. Included are all 26 episodes from the TV series in english and japanese audio (2.0) and an english subtitle track. In my opion the dubbed version is quite advantageous but the major flaw is that the Ruri character can not compare the its unusual counterpart (some flair of the series is lost) . Extra features include 3 commentary tracks (from some of the english shriek actors/actresses) of selected episodes which are quite droll, character bios, desirable opening/closing and some ADV previews. Apart from the box you collect 6 DVD thincases with nice artwork as veil and a Nadesico flyer (no booklets or other care for stuff) . But regarding the impress no one should complain. I won’t spoil a lot about the series itself except that Nadesico is a recent and shining mixture of different genres (and probably a bit underrated) . Definitely a catch consideration for all those who are into anime and do not have this yet.

This is the original ‘thinpak’ stutter of the common Sci-fi Action-Comedy Anime Nadesico. The ‘thinpak’ series is ADV Films’ (the licensor for this series) plan of giving it’s customers cheaper boxsets of whole series of Anime, the cost being their petite size and usually injurious (if not totally removed) extras compared to the traditional box sets. Typically a gargantuan value nonetheless.

This series focuses on the Nadesico, a highly-advanced space-faring battleship created by a private military company called Nergal for the apparent sole purpose of rescuing colonists on Mars from the threat of an alien hurry known as the “Jovian Lizards”. Being the most advanced share of military equipment man can originate, no ordinary crew can successfully control it, so new individuals from all walks of life are called to be it’s crew.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Martian Successor Nadesico Perfect Collection! Click Here

Unfortunately, these individuals are “modern” in terrible ways as well, consisting mostly of women who have itsy-bitsy to no military experience and personality quirks. To commence with, their captain, Yurika Misamaru, a Japanese woman with a shrewd tactical mind, tends to act like an remark airhead and is understanding of by Nergal as being cramped more than eye-candy the crew will blindingly listen to because she’s stunning. Their chief engineer Seiya Uribitake is an atypical wrathful scientist who neglects his family to work on highly destructive and uncommon devices such as maid robots that fire missiles. Their science officer, Ruri Hoshino, is a genetically-engineered young girl who regards everyone around her as an idiot and is totally inexperienced at interacting with others. Most notably, their ace pilot, Akito Tenkawa, is formally a cook, not a pilot!

Akito Tenkawa is the main focus of the memoir, a Martian-born man who was cessation childhood friends with Yurika (who was also born on Mars) who struggles to understand how he ended up on Earth when his last memories were of him on Mars struggling (and apparently failing) to set aside a young girl from invading Jovian Lizards and staring death in the face himself, as well as his deny awe of the Jovians, and the mystery of the supposed cancel of his parents. He also must struggle with the fact that absence has made the heart grow fonder with Yurika and she will not terminate fawning over him, constantly trying to create him plunge in fancy with her. Akito’s romantic problems compound when other women on the ship start to study him as well.

The series both takes itself seriously and engages in self-parody, never allowing itself to partake too grand in one over the other. The action scenes are usually quite serious, with the valid trouble of people dying in battle. Meanwhile when there are no immediate threats to life and limb, the characters deal with more comic problems on the ship. This is one of those series that actually manages to balance dramatic action and situational comedy.

The animation and artwork is highly detailed and aloof, with many surfaces having shines consistent with a vivid sci-fi setup.

The drawl acting is wonderful in Japanese, spoken by frail Japanese deny actors, though at points the characters will randomly tell partially or even fully in English, sometimes with hilarious results such as an early point in the series where Yurika addresses a broad gathering of military minds completely in English, with a very thick Japanese accent.

The disclose acting in English is more than passable. The scream actors clearly save exertion into their roles, especially Spike Spencer as Akito Tenkawa, easily nailing the feeling of a anime-loving cook constantly thrown in ridiculous situations where his life may be in misfortune. Never the less, despite the concern and salubrious work the actors effect in, some of their voices don’t always seem to fit the characters and the scripts they read from may differ a bit from what was originally said in the Japanese version though thankfully, it never strays too far to the point of ridiculousness.

The subtitled translation of the series is very faithful, apparently updated from previous subtitled translation of the series.

All in all, I highly recommend this series, it makes a mountainous impression and is a immense value with this dwelling.
