“Love actually is all around…”
“Love Actually” is just the right mix of romantic comedy and drama to leave you with that warm, fuzzy feeling as you leave the theatre. It’s an ideal Christmas movie for moms and dads who want to see something else while the kids venture into more PG films.
Writer/director Richard Curtis enlists a plethora of some of the finest British actors (and a few noteworthy Americans) to tell several different love stories. While it seems that there may be a few too many characters at first, the overall flow of the film allows the viewer to keep track quite easily. The cast is led by the ever-so-charming Hugh Grant as the British Prime Minister. While some critics have called this casting unbelievable, Grant actually pulls it off by portraying a more human, but yet stronger PM that we would all love to have leading us. His dance to the Pointer Sisters’ “Jump for My Love” borders a bit on ridiculous, but it is nevertheless fun to watch. In the film, the PM is caught between leading his country with a clear head, or giving in to his feelings of attraction to his tea server Natalie (played by musical actress Martine McCutcheon).
And then there’s Emma Thompson, who plays Karen, sister to Grant’s PM and a long-married devoted mother. She suspects that her husband Harry (Alan Rickman) may be cheating with a sexy co-worker. Her performance, simply put, is a revelation. The scene where she is in her bedroom is an example of phenominal acting. Hollywood Foreign Press and Academy members: please take notice!
Another strong performance award goes to Bill Nighy, who provides most of the film’s comic relief as aging rock star Billy Mack. He puts out a cheesy Christmas record and then publicly bashes it. But in classic Hollywood ending style, he does have an epiphany and realizes his wild musician life has been missing true affection.
Liam Neeson shines as widower Daniel who tries to help his young stepson win the heart of a popular school crush. Equally sweet is Colin Firth as Jamie, a man recovering from a broken relationship in France who falls for his monolingual Portuguese maid. You know what? This film is such an abundance of great performances that I will run out of space discussing them all! Everybody shines! My only cast complaint is that Rowan Atkinson should have been given more screen time.
What I also love about “Love Actually” is that Curtis doesn’t, if you’ll pardon the pun, wrap up each story in a happy little Christmas package. There are a few sad, realistic moments, particularly in the Karen/Harry subplot and in Laura Linney’s turn as Sarah, an assistant who has waited so long to be with the man she loves. She realizes, in some of the film’s key dramatic instances, that family matters are getting in the way.
All in all, Curtis has struck gold again, in tradition of movies like “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary.” Yeah, some of the love stories may be a little far-fetched, but aren’t they all in fantasy movie world? What matters is that they are sweet and not without their share of obstacles. This film is a nice departure from some of the more disturbing violent films as of late. But be warned: it is a little more adult than most other comedies in theatres. The innuendos, language, and nudity earn the R-rating. So see it without the young kids, but do enjoy.
(4+) Actually Quite Entertaining but Definitely Deserves “R”
My rating is based on my enjoyment of this film. It has both major strengths and serious weaknesses, and as other reviews indicate has fostered very strong reactions, both positive and negative. Its format is somewhat disconcerting if you are not prepared for the methodology of the director. It contains nudity, profanity, sexual situations, and several situations that are very suggestive and some moviegoers may consider to border on the obscene. However, the situations that some people may consider offensive actually serve a purpose in developing the overall theme of the film.
Love, in all its manifestations – wonder, joy, pain, happiness, passion, grief… is the theme of the film. A very talented ensemble cast is utilized to tell several somewhat interrelated stories concerning the emotional lives of the various characters. The cast includes Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Laura Linney, Kiera Knightley and Alan Rickman. There are also telling cameos by Billy Bob Thornton and Rowan Atkinson. There is one other essential element of the story, it begins five weeks from Christmas and there are several aspects of the various vignettes where the seasonal aspect is a crucial element.
One of the more interesting and complex stories involves Liam Neeson and his young stepson preparing for the funeral of his wife, which has been moving scripted by her prior to her death. As he subsequently tries to deal with his grief, he is worried about the fact that the boy is isolating himself in his room. He is surprised to discover that while his son is disconsolate at the loss of his mother, more importantly he is heartsick over his unrequited love for a girl with whom he attends school. As they concentrate on his son’s dilemma and develop a plan to attract her attention, the dialog ranges from comic to quite profound. And, as the movie progresses to the time of the school Christmas pageant their story gradually becomes interwoven with several of the others. Some of the most hilarious segments are in another thread of the movie involving Bill Nighy as a washed up pop singer trying to recycle one of his old love songs as a Christmas record. He effectively caricatures the dissolute rockers who abused their bodies for too long with drugs, booze and sex. Yet in the end, the alternate humor and pathos of his situation are resolved in a very effective and quite emotional scene. In yet another thread, a scene with Emma Thompson listening to a Joni Mitchell recording and thinking about the “both sides” of her life and love is a real tearjerker.
So this is a roller coaster of laughs and cheap humor combined with real insights about love and the pain that it can cause. If you aren’t living in a bubble, you will probably relate to the experiences of at least one of the characters to some degree and knowingly nod in recognition of the similarities of others to people that you know. It is arguable whether the message of the film would be better conveyed with a fewer number of stories examined in somewhat more depth, but I think the result is quite powerful. Lives which seem only tangentially connected turn out to have a profound influence on others, and we really feel that we have come to understand the characters that we have been watching.
My first difficulty with the movie is that the complexity of developing so many stories means that it is well over two hours long (with the previews and unconscionable ads we were in the theater for well over two hours). Second, the audience is introduced to a very large number of characters during a very short period of time, since all the stories are interspersed sequentially as the movie proceeds toward Christmas Day. Very few individual segments until the finale are more than three or four minutes in length. However, the disorientation that I felt at first from the constant scene shifts was offset by the fact that this technique was successful in keeping the audience very interested; the film actually seemed shorter than it was because of the constant action. So, it was fun while actually conveying a message at the same time. I also want to see it again, since this is the type of movie that I often enjoy more during subsequent viewings. I find that once I know the basic story line and the relationship of the various characters, I can then pay attention to a lot of the details that went were difficult to appreciate because there was so much constantly happening during the film. (In fact, as I was thinking about the film prior to writing this review a few such instances came to mind.) So, go see this film when you have time to relax and want to laugh and contemplate life for a few hours.

Magical!
If there is a film out this year that is destined to make your heart smile and eyes tear, it’s this film. It’s Christmas time again in London as unexpected (almost magical) things happen in very simple, heartening ways to the most unlikely people. With love lost and love found, courage found and courage lost, this movie is all about the love we have in our daily lives. The love we receive from those unknown people to us (sometimes form those who show slight animosity toward us.)
The characters will capture your heart (Emma Thompson is phenomenal.) For me, the scene that really did capture me was that of Emma Thompson in her bedroom listening to Joni Mitchell’s perennial Both Sides Now. That scene made me cry.
This is the sweetest movie I have seen this year. I highly recommend seeing it during the Holidays with people you love.

I reflect that when you prefer the longest Harry Potter book and turn it into the shortest Harry Potter film, that a tall number of complaints by fans as to what has been cleave will be inevitable after they contemplate “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Not that this means that the legions of fans will be bitterly disappointed by the film version, but rather that there will be regrets over not getting to gawk current scenes on the mask. For example, Quidditch is completely out of the film, denying Ron of his best moments in the sun (open singing “Weasley is our king”) . So do not be surprised when your mind keeps shifting to what has been prick and distracting you from time to time while watching this summer’s latest blockbuster.

When last we left our hero, Harry fell victim to a trap to bring relieve Lord Voldermort, which cost Cedric Diggory his life. The Ministry of Magic wants things hushed up, but Dumbledore tells the students at Hogwarts that Diggory was murdered and Lord Voldermort murdered him. As this fifth film opens Harry and his injurious cousin Dudley are attacked by Dementors. Harry uses his wand to defend them and is summarily expelled from Hogwarts for using magic in front of a muggle. The sterling news is that Harry gets reinstated, but the abominable news is that the Ministry of Magic uses the opportunity to appoint Dolores Umbridge, Senior Undersecretary at the Ministry, as the school’s current Defense Against the Murky Arts professor. However, Umbridge teaches only the theory and not the practice because she insists Harry is a liar and there is nothing the students need to learn to defend themselves from. Then things secure progressively worse.
“The Order of the Phoenix” was the most maddening book to read, not because it was the longest, but because I disapprove Dolores Umbridge. As far as I am concerned she makes Voldermort examine well-behaved, because he knows he is nasty, unsuitable, dreadful, mean and disagreeable inside, while Umbridge thinks the ends interpret the means. She is puritanical, sadistic and hypocritical. If there were not going to be children reading this review I would whisper you what I really assume of her. Suffice it to say, she makes me sick and I do not even recall pleasure in loving to detest her, which is why my only requirement going into the film is that the Weasley Twins find their moment of glory when they become the disloyal opposition to the current order at Hogwarts.

Daniel Radcliffe continues to have the tote the heavy load in these films as Harry, with Rupert Grint’s Ron Weasley being reduced more and more often to reaction shots while Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger remains the Mistress of Exposition in these films. Alan Rickman as Snape remains pitch perfect casting and Gary Oldman as Sirius Gloomy is also a joy to inspect, but I discovered in this film that I really like Michael Gambon’s performance as Dumbledore, mainly because he always plays up the character’s intelligence and I fetch I assume his interpretation to that of the behind Richard Harris, forgive my heresy. Imelda Staunton does not spy as remarkable like a toad as Umbridge does in the book, but she captures the character’s detestability from originate to execute. We are always painfully aware how unsafe she is, whether she smiles or not. Also, Evanna Lynch steals more scenes as Luna Lovegood than Katie Leung does as Cho Chang, and it is certainly spicy to peek Neville (Matthew Lewis) towering over everybody, with Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) in the restful but strong role for the pivotal sextet.
After seeing this film I raced home and got out my copy of the book and starting cataloguing things that had been reduce. Such comparisons are, as I suggested up top, inevitable for anyone who has read the book. At this point what I missed the most were some of the conversations between Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall and Umbridge where Minerva verbally flaws the Inquisitor. The omission that I am focusing on the most is the whole bit about why Neville’s family was a target of Voldermort (I agree with Harry: always say his name and thereby lop its power), since that suggests implications for what will happen in the final book, which gets released in objective ten more days. I also would have liked to have seen an over reaction to Harry discovering his father bullied Snape at Hogwarts. My accepted allotment ends up being the impressive wizard’s duel between Voldermort and Dumbledore. Screenwriter Michael Goldenberg does a kindly job of whittling down Rowling’s book and director David Yates does a competent job, but fans will simply want more. Also, we know what happens in the next book and all of the unpleasant things that happen in this film cannot aid but seem inconsequential in comparison. Plus, fans will be distracted by mining this film for clues as to what will happen in the last book.
I worship Harry Potter, OK? So before you freak out, let me earn that out of the device. The book version “Order of the Phoenix” was oustanding. I also mediate that previous directors have done heavenly advantageous to sizable jobs of translating the books to film (though I must say things went a shrimp downhill once Chris Columbus left.)
All that being said, here’s the kicker:
The movie “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” played like a Cliff’s Notes adaptation of the book.
It lopped off a lot of the charm and romance and heartfelt pathos of the book— as well as a lot of the pure creative touches— in order to fetch the main arc of the legend down. On top of that, it made “adaptations” to the book in order to secure the account entertaining along— yet all these “compromises” were actually worse than what JK Rowling originally wrote!
Don’t hold me? Here is only SOME of what is unpleasant with this movie:
–Poor devlopment of the Harry/Cho Chang arc (The kiss is about all you collect. No proper feeling gradual it at all. No devlopement of Harry’s crush. No final fracture up argument on Valentine’s Day.)
–Making Cho into an heinous snitch (which is why she and Harry broke up in the movie.) In the movie SHE is the one who betrays Harry. Wearisome.
–No hospital scenes. No meeting of Neville’s parents.
–Perfunctory explanation of Grimmaud Site
–Perfunctory development of Occlumency
–Harry gets to hear the prophecy while standing in the Department of Mysteries rather than later with Dumbledore. On top of this, he gets to hear the prophecy fair by holding it in his hand. That makes no logical sense at all!
–The Department of Mysteries itself is compressed down into one room (the room with the prophecies.) All the wintry rooms (with the blue lights, the 12 doors, the clocks, the brains, and so on) are all impartial ignored. Those were such vast inventions by JK Rowling–perhaps some of the most creative stuff in all the books– that I can’t beget they honest lop them!
–The room with the arch is made into a really lifeless dwelling.
–The battle scene is really short and rather dull.
–Snape’s memory of being tortured by James Potter and his argument with Lily Potter is compressed into literally a total of 4 seconds of film. That scence is so PIVOTAL to the rest of the book series that I can’t gain they got away with not fully developing the scene.
On top of all these situation issues, the WORST fragment about this movie is that there was really no FEELING in it. The whole range of emotional arcs that are so well-developed in the book are done absolutely terribly in the movie. Yeah, Sirius dies. In the book, it is a devatating moment. In the movie, it’s like “Oh, well.” Harry, Ron and Hermione don’t have many moments together. There is no laughing in the movie. We don’t secure to feel pathos for Neville because his parents are insane. We don’t obtain to feel the gratefulness of the Weasleys when Harry saves Mr Weasley. There are no lighthearted moments. Almost every scene except one or two that could have developed the emotional attachment we feel to the characters has been summarily excluded.
Like one other reviewer said: The movie is too short, yet it feels too long.
That is, sorry to say, a perfect description of a hack job.

Spider-Man 2 surpasses the original!
Just when I was about ready to throw in the towel on Hollywood and its univentive sequel/remake/book adaption craze of unoriginal recycling, I sat down to see the second chapter in Sam Raimi’s “Spider Man” series. While I enjoyed the first film, it never really drew me in emotionally. It had some real cool action sequences and some interesting special effects but the story was very paint-by-numbers comic book fare. I enjoyed the film’s cinematic style, which seemed to me like an homage to the 50′s-style of films, but while I wasn’t turned off by the the hero’s backstory, I was never fully compelled by it either. When I had heard all of the cast members spit the usual studio speech about how the sequel would be even better, I took it very much with a grain of salt. By the time I came out of this movie, however, I was a believer.
“Spider Man 2″ takes place two years after the original where Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is struggling with the realization that his superhero alter-ego is alienating him from everyone that he loves. His best friend, Harry (James Franco) is stelling stewing over his father’s death at the hands of Spidey and the object of his affections, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) is fed up by Pete’s inability to committ to her. If that wasn’t bad enough, his commitment to crime fighting has cost him more than a few jobs and he’s struggling to pay his rent. On the Spider-Man side of things, he has to deal with a new enemy, Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), a transformed version of Otto Octavius, a brilliant fusion engineer whose expirement ends up killing his wife and subsquently driving him insane. As far as super-villians go, this one’s a doosy.
“Spider Man 2″ improves on so many aspects of the first film. Where the first film had Maguire as the akward teen coping with his newfound powers and subsquent responsibilites, this one paints him as the reluctant hero that is banished to a life of personal abandoment. The hero seems like a far greater underdog this go around as Spider-Man must deal with a much tougher villian while Peter Parker tries to put his life back together. I liked the fact that Raimi balanced out the film’s jaw-dropping effects with some emotional character depth. There is a good mixture of storytelling and cinematic style here. Raimi also improved on the dialouge here. There are some comedic moments but the rivalry between Spidey and Doc Ock doesn’t elevate itself to the level of cheesy line-trading that went on between Maguire and Dafoe in the first.
The performances are really what seperates this one from its predecassor. Tobey Maguire is given a lot more to do, this time around. While Molina doesn’t have the same charisma as Dafoe, his villian is far more menacing. Kirsten Dunst is given a somewhat smaller role here but it serves its purpose. My one complaint is that Mary Jane doesn’t really look the same in this one. In the first movie, she had a much different look to her than most of the characters that Dunst has portrayed. Here, she doesn’t carry herself the same way. It doesn’t really take anything away from the film but it is somewhat noticeable whether intended or not. There are a good deal of amusing cameo appearances here as well but I’m not gonna spoil them for you.
“Spider Man 2″ is not just one of the better sequels I’ve seen in awhile but also one of the best films of its kind that I’ve seen at the movies in some time. I can’t remember the last time that I went into a movie theatre and was entertained on so many levels the way that I was with this film. Maybe low expectations might have played a part in it but in all honesty, I doubt it. No matter what your preconceived notion of this movie is, you will probably be drawn in just the same. You don’t have to be a comic book fan or even a fan of the first movie to enjoy but it certainly doesn’t hurt things. (Review: ****1/2)
The Best Movie of 2004
Spiderman 2 has some of the highest expectations to ever be placed on a movie. Spiderman grossed $403 million dollars and is the fifth most successful movie in U.S. history. Spiderman 2 could shatter that number.
Spiderman 2 picks up right where Spiderman left us. Peter Parker(Maguire) is a struggling college student. His grades are slipping and so are his friendships with his best friends Mary Jane(Dunst) and Harry(Franco). His Aunt May(Harris) is worried sick about him. His duties as Spiderman are keeping him so busy he’s starting to fall apart. He has a huge assignment due in school about a famous scientist and Harry happens to know the guy so he gives him the hook up.
Harry is now in charge of special operations at Osbourne Industries. Dr. Otto Octavius(Molina) is a world famous scientist who has ideas on how fusion will save the world. He’s created four mechanical arms he wears that help him do the work. An accident happens though that causes the arms to fuse to the Dr and he goes on the rampage because the A.I. from the arms consume him. He is determined to make his fusion work and will stop at nothing to do it.
Peter is a little devestated by the accident. He enjoyed meeting Octavius but is saddened by the experience. His life is also getting very hard on him. He finds out Mary Jane is engaged and is so mad with him that she wants almost nothing to do with him. Harry is so obsessed with killing Spiderman because he blames him for his dads death. He’s angry at Peter and wants him to give him info on Spiderman. Peter can’t take it anymore so he gives up as the web slinger.
Peter is happy with his new life. His grades are improving, but his relationship with MJ isn’t going the way he wanted. Doc Ock is still on the loose and must be stopped. Will the web slinger give up his new found happy life and stop Doc Ock or will he keep his new found happines. This is the movie that is Spiderman 2.
This movie destroys the first one. It’s much more entertaing than the first. It doesn’t drag like the first one did, because so many new character aren’t introduced. The movie is quite humerous in places and it is obvious that Raimi is more comfortable with the character. Raimi’s comedic charm is evident all over the film and he takes the story and runs with it.
An excellent story has been given to us. The Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar contribute to it. The screenplay is from Alvin Sargent who has written a comic masterpiece. The writers did a fantastic job with the story.
Tobey McGuire is excellent as Spiderman. He is perfectly cast as Peter Parker. He seems more comfortable with the role and he shines. Kirsten Dunst is hot as Mary Jane. Like everybody else it’s obvious she is more comfortable with the role and it’s a bigger one for her this time around. Molina as Doc Ock is perfect. A awesome cast was done with this movie and the makers really need to be complimented on the good job.
This movie is awesome. It’s the most entertaining movie of 2004. It’s easily the best comic book movie ever. Spiderman has always had a more humble human trait that so many other comic heros don’t have. It’s not so much about his powers and abilites, but how much he sacrifices to make the world a beter place. He puts other people above himself and he does so for the right reasons. With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility and that’s why we love Spiderman.
You have to see this movie. This is what a comic movie should be. It’s the best movie to this date of 2004 and is family fun entertainment. You can’t call yourself a Spiderman fan and not see it. Go see it and be prepared for a great time.
Spider-Man, No More….
The trailers for this movie looked great and the reviews have been stellar. Definitely the movie of the summer whether you are a Spidey fan or not. As most reviews have pointed out, the storyline is very well developed. Peter Parker struggles with complexities of living a dual life. And decides for a time to be Spider-Man, No More.
I won’t go into detail too much about the plot as every other review on here will probably give you a synopsis. I will however, make some comments about what I particularly liked or disliked about this film.
I found that I came out of the movie thinking that there wasn’t as much action as I expected. It was strange that Peter Parker’s powers could go away simply because he didn’t want to be Spider-Man anymore. And I found myself noticing that Tobey Maguire was starting too look a bit old for this part. He is already 28(?) now, and by the time Spider-Man 3 is released, I may not be able to be convinced that he Peter Parker anymore. I was also a little disappointed that the rumours of a Venom appearance weren’t true and that the next movie will probably feature Harry Osbourne as the Green Goblin. And I didn’t like how so many people saw Spider-Man’s identity (Harry, MJ, Doc Ock, all the people on the train).
Among the things I liked most was the beginning of the movie, which was very clever in the way that it showed you storyboards from the 1st movie to refresh your memory and summarize what has happened. Undoubtedbly, the action scenes in this movie were great (eg. the scene where he has to stop the speeding train). And the storyline is very well developed. In addition to these, there was also a good mix of humour thrown in to make the movie even more entertaining (eg. when Peter gives up being Spider-Man to the tune of Rain Drops Keep Falling On My Head, and the elevator scene where the stranger asks him about the costume… “a little itchy”… haha). We also saw characters from the comics such as John Jameson, which some of us know as Man-Wolf.
This is a great movie to see with the family and I hope that it breaks many box office records. (…) That’s it for now Spidey fans! Have a great summer!

“Dexter” never disappoints! As a ample fan of the point to, I was concerned how Season 3 would play out now that one of my popular characters, James Doakes, is out of the record. I never should have disquieted, because the third season of “Dexter” was impartial as incredible as the first two. This season mainly focuses on Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) personal relationships. He’s working through some major issues with his deceased father, Harry (James Remar), and his relationship with Rita (Julie Benz) takes a surprising turn when she announces that she’s pregnant with Dexter’s child. All of these emotions cause Dexter to turn to an unlikely person…Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), who takes a liking to Dexter and makes it his personal mission to become Dexter’s BFF. No one is more surprised by this than Dexter, who discovers that he has more in well-liked with Miguel than he possibly imagined. For the first time in his life, Dexter has a friend whom he can rely on and fraction (some) of his dirty minute secrets with. After a while, however, Dexter realizes that there’s worthy more to Miguel than he originally opinion, and decides that the ADA may not be BFF material after all.

This is a stout season chock paunchy of twists, turns, and excitement. In addition to Dexter’s storyline, there are immense subplots spirited a unique serial killer (“The Skinner”), Deborah’s (Jennifer Carpenter) relationship with a CI, Angel’s (David Zayas) recovery from his divorce, and Maria’s (Lauren Velez) coping with the death of her conventional partner in Season 2. I am always impressed by the device this series constantly surprises its audience and keeps evolving these dynamic characters. The whole conception of Dexter making a friend was so simple, and yet carried the entire season extremely well (thanks in fraction to an outstanding performance by Smits) . My one complaint about Season 3 is that it’s already over, and I have to wait a long time before the arrival of Season 4! However, I have a feeling it will definitely be worth waiting for.
I finally took advantage of getting what I pay for with my cable company. Prior to Season 3 of Dexter, I watched the first two seasons on DVD (Season One & Season Two) . I broken-down to send all this money to my cable company for subscribing to Showtime, and Dexter was never share of my regular TV viewing until 2008. Color me lifeless. What was I missing out on? …Only the absolute best indicate on TV.
How pleasant is it? Let’s attach it this plan…I’m actually gratified that I hadn’t seen this until DVD, because my wife and I were able to search for the first two seasons in weeks versus like 3 months PER regular season on Showtime. We often watched three episodes in one night on the DVD sets. Alas, I couldn’t wait for Season 3′s release on DVD, so it was one episode of Dexter, one week at a time for Season 3.

So certainly one of the generous things about Dexter on DVD is that you don’t need to wait 12 weeks to study a season from open to execute. But certainly the best thing about the series is how well done it is.
Dexter (played by Michael C. Hall of HBO’s Six Feet Under fame) is a blood spatter analyst with Miami Homicide. It’s his job to encourage solve murders, and he also happens to moonlight as a serial killer….Impartial a side imprint that last portion.
The acting in the point to is terrific, and the thrills and twists are plentiful. Combine the nature of Dexter’s professional life with his celebrated pass-time, and you can bet your carotid artery that there’s plenty of blood in the expose too. The major state provocative guest star Jimmy Smits in Season 3 is a bit more of a stretch of reality than were Season’s 1 & 2. But the acting, dialogue and well-written fable scoot kept the demonstrate correct up there at the top of my list of TV’s finest.

I’ve since written an updated review about a unusual edition of this title, now available in a “Two-Disc Collector’s Station.” Please secure that review — which was posted on December 13, 2008. (Amazon has posted my 2006 review in both places — even though the “60th Anniversary Edition” DVD is DIFFERENT from the “Two-Disc Collector’s Spot”. I’ve owned nearly every version of this title in almost every format available on home video during the past 25 years. It’s factual that the Advise of this Viacom/Paramount DVD — including its special features — is identical to the Republic Pictures Home Video release more than 10 years ago.
However, this 60th Anniversary edition is spectacular for several different and extremely critical reasons. (I’ll address the criticisms some people have leveled about the sound on this 2006 DVD in a limited bit, so stick with me.)

You don’t have to be a technical expert to immediately behold the striking improvement of the report AND sound in this 2006 edition. The print is crystal-clear and in my notion, has more vividness and sharpness than ALL other previous releases of this title on home video.
Proof? I achieve my “ancient” THX-version DVD issued by Republic Pictures / Artisan Home Video (the worn DVD gold standard for this title) — into my Sony multi-changer DVD player — and watched and listened to every frame of this film AND its special features. I stopped and started this “older” DVD in several spots — and stopped and started the novel 2006 Paramount edition repeatedly — so I could compare quality almost “side-by-side.”
Hands down — this 2006 version is extraordinary. The spots and dirt have been wiped well-kept, the sharpness and disagreement are arguably better than what film audiences saw 60 years ago. There are no worn spots, no jumped frames and no lint, fiber or hair fragments along the edges or jumping across the shroud. I occupy the technicians at Paramount (which acquired Republic Pictures Home Video) — digitally cleaned EVERY frame of the last DVD release — so that the film now looks like a million dollars. It’s almost too pristine, if there is such a thing. No jump cuts, no “jump ahead” sound breaks, no fogged-out scenes, nothing aged — with the result being the cleanest and purest version of “It’s A Incredible Life” ever issued in home video history.
It gets better. English subtitles were available on older DVD versions of this title, but the 2006 version has a cleaner typeface, wiping out some of the confusing and unnecessary attributions of “who’s saying what” that were disruptive to some hearing-impaired viewers. In this 2006 version, you’ll gain a mostly straight, line-by-line reading of what’s being said — as it’s being said.
Meanwhile, the DVD’s special features — which include the same pair of documentaries produced in 1990 and 1991 — are identical in that they were shot on video tape hence there isn’t great improvement in report quality. However, subtitles that WERE NOT available for these special features — are NOW available in this 2006 edition. The only “extra” to the previous “gold standard” that remains unchanged — is the novel 1946 trailer. Subtitles are not available and it has the same raggedness and dirt commonly seen with vintage trailers stored separately from the films they faded to advertise.
I’m highly famous of re-issued DVDs that seem nothing more than an excuse to squeeze more dollars out of buyers for the same material with unique packaging. But this 2006 Paramount DVD version of “It’s A Improbable Life” is the best to date. It is NOT in color. (I have a colorized version for younger people who can’t stand black-and-white. Despite controversy surrounding colorization, know that the 2007 “Two-Disc Collector’s Region” has the same 2006 60th Anniversary black-and-white edition you peep here — plus a recent “colorized” version. This version uses the same pristine print — but has the added bonus of boasting the best “color” hues ever seen for this film, using the latest image technology available. Despite my preference for black-and-white, the quality of this recent colorized version is impressive.)
Meanwhile, let’s address the criticisms about the sound on this modern DVD. Go attend a dinky bit. Distinguished was made when Republic Pictures Home Video got the THX LucasFilm sound system seal of approval for “It’s A Unbelievable Life” during the 1990s. But it was smooth two-channel mono with negligible equalization of sound effects. In this 2006 DVD, you’ll gather consistent two-channel mono and decent sound equalization to minimize “booming” and over-modulated portions in the film. In the frail versions, you had to turn down the volume a notch during the musical portions — and turn it befriend up when the dialogue came befriend. It’s a nit-pick, but you really peruse the inequity if you’re crazy enough to do a side-by-side comparison like I did.
As for the digital sound “pops” that perfectionists hold bringing up — they’re correct. They’re even in the spots notorious by another resplendent reviewer who listed time codes where you can accumulate them. But in my concept, unless you brace yourselves for them to advance like a booming deliver — unless you purposely crank up your speakers to carry sound throughout your house — yeah, you “might” be annoyed if you ask the same perfection for a film made in 1946 as you would for a film made in 2006. Honestly, the disproportionate attention given to these digital “pops” is, in my belief, giving fence-sitters the impression that they’re supersonic cracks of lightning that will beget people jump out of their seats. I didn’t twitch at all. They almost “blended” into the 60-year-old soundtrack. Yes, I know they’re digital defects, but do you remember the zillion “pops” scattered throughout dirty prints of “It’s A Astounding Life” with filthy optical soundtracks? The audio on this 2006 DVD quiet wins. You have EVERY Suitable to seek information from perfection for your dollars. But as a person who’s more fastidious than average — I don’t own most buyers will care about a few “pops” in a film that’s this extinct. Combine the overall improvements with the relatively gross cost of this DVD — and I detached say this is the BEST experience of “It’s A Astonishing Life” I’ve ever SEEN and HEARD on home video.
Finally, another reason to capture this DVD. It’s frail news to some, but it’s not widely known that this version of “It’s A Extraordinary Life” can only be broadcast by NBC. It obsolete to air a zillion times during the holidays on every TV position on earth. It was a rapidly procedure to net tired of even a well-organized film you deem you know by heart. But Viacom/Paramount now owns this version of “It’s A Amazing Life” outright and NBC has outlandish licensing rights to air it honest once or twice after Thanksgiving. This is a gracious thing for future generations to relish.
So junk the primitive, win this version and be gay. It may feel painful, but it’s worth it. And no, I DON’T work for Amazon OR for Paramount Home Video.
A beautifully crafted film that proved to be the apex of triple Oscar-winner (1934, 1936, 1938) Frank Capra’s famous career, and the epitome of his cycle of works celebrating the “approved man”. Mr. Deeds found himself suddenly wealthy, Mr. Smith went to Washington as a Senator, and John Doe became the focus of a socio-political movement; but “Life”‘s George Bailey never distinguishes himself outside of his puny hometown of Bedford Falls — his brother Harry is the one who becomes a war hero, and his friend Sam Wainwright is the one who achieves financial success. George’s triumph is simply his personal integrity, his code of ethics, and his strength of character — his goodness, if you will — during the unexciting course of his ordinary, mundane existence. In this respect, George is more an Everyman than any other Capra protagonist, sharp strong audience identification and response.

In one of the most magnificent performances ever given in an American film, James Stewart is wonderful as George. It’s not an easy role to play because so distinguished camouflage time is spent focusing on George’s subtle reactions to the world around him. One astonishing moment comes at the enlighten status when George slowly begins to believe the news of his brother’s novel marriage and fresh career opportunity, and how his brother’s fortune will extinguish his gain hopes of leaving Bedford Falls and the family business. Stewart’s face is astounding in this scene, as surprised realization fades into detached disappointment and finally, gentle graciousness and acceptance. Stewart’s tour de force is given strong abet by a valid cast of Capra stalwarts, including Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, H. B. Warner, and the phenomenal Beulah Bondi (as George’s mother) . And Donna Reed, in one of her first romantic leading roles after a number of years playing supporting ingenues and bits, is sterling in the warm but unglamorous role of George’s loving wife, Mary.
The Republic Home Video DVD is definitely the edition of this classic to bear. Like the LaserDisc before it, the DVD offers a crystal definite, beautifully restored film-to-video transfer which will amaze and delight anyone who is familiar only with the contemptible multi-generational VHS cassettes, or the unpleasant colorized version, that were commonly screened serve in the leisurely 1970′s and 1980′s. There are some nice bonus features on the DVD, including a “making of” documentary and the theatrical trailer. This is one DVD that you’ll never regret adding to your home theatre collection!
Trivia note: If you’re a fan of this movie, try finding a copy of film historian David Thomson’s 1985 unique “Suspects” which continues George’s myth and relates the characters from this movie to many others (did you know that Donna Reed’s “Mary Bailey” is actually the sister of Gene Tierney’s “Laura”?!, etc.) … large fun!
