A serious movie that also happens to be pretty funny![]()
Yes, this movie has plenty of funny moments, but there is a very real and sometimes rather touching story that takes precedence over everything that happens. You can’t get through the most serious of situations without the palliative of laughter now and again, and Life actually does tell a serious story. Eddie Murphy proves once again that he is a great actor, and Martin Lawrence was surprisingly good as the more serious of two men sentenced to life in prison for a murder they didn’t commit. One night in 1932, fate brought Rayford Gibson (Murphy), a smooth-talking hustler with big dreams, and Claude Banks (Lawrence) a respectable fellow about to start a good job, together in a New York nightclub. For entirely different reasons, both guys have to face the displeasure of the club owner’s wrath; and so it is that Gibson and Banks end up going on a bootlegging run to Mississippi. One dead man later, and both men are sentenced to life in prison for murder. Since Banks blames Gibson for getting him into all this mess, there relationship varies in quality as the years go by, but gradually a real friendship develops between them. They try to escape several times but end up spending basically their whole lives in prison. Along the way, we meet with several sub-plots involving some of their fellow inmates, but the movie never strays far from the lives of Gibson and Banks. The passage of time is marked by clips of historical events, and some excellent makeup works makes both men look old and worn out as they advance into their senior years.
This is not a prison story of hopelessness, however. While no pardon ever comes their way, justice has a way of willing out eventually, and the final ten minutes of the film are just terrific. Since the story does take place in Mississippi in 1932 and beyond, race plays a major part in the film, but it does not define the movie by any means. There are a number of funny scenes, especially those involving pie and cornbread, and Eddie Murphy will definitely make you laugh – Martin Lawrence sort of plays the heavy here to Murphy’s periodic antics. Some familiar faces pop up in the movie: Rick James plays the New York club owner, Bernie Mac has a relatively minor role, and Heavy D plays a small but important part. Wyclef Jean contributes an original score for the film. The whole cast is excellent, and a very good script keeps the film on pace and lively.
This isn’t Stir Crazy; there are plenty of laughs, but I wouldn’t call this a comedy – Life the movie is funny in the way life itself can sometimes be – laughter can get us through the hard times, but it doesn’t hide the fact that the hard times are there. This movie really deserves more attention than it has received; with its serious underlying quality, it ranks among Eddie Murphy’s most impressive films.
One of the very best comedies of ’99![]()
I’ve seen “Life” twice thus far, and I must concede that it has to be one of the best films to ever cast Eddie Murphy. He and Martin Lawrence are just as emotionally poignant as they are downright hysterical in this memorable comedy/drama of two Prohibition-era guys from Harlem NYC who inadvertently become framed for murder in the Deep South while on a bootlegging run for the local crime boss they each owe debts to back home. They are soon enough sentenced to life imprisonment in a Mississippi chain gang where they share a “Felix and Oscar”-esque relationship that spans 65 years through thick and thin times (including numerous escape attempts). However in the end, they literally become friends for life as they come to terms with their imprisonment. The make-up done by 6-time Oscar winner Rick Baker to transform Murphy & Lawrence from young to old over the course of so many years is the true showstopper of “Life”. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Mr. Baker garners Oscar #7 come 2000; he and Murphy have been quite a dynamic duo since “Coming to America”. A definite must-see!
Life is funny, Life is great….![]()
This movie is perhaps Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence’s Sistine Chapel. That is a bold statement but this movie is so funny and such a good, well made movie. There are endless funny moments in this movie. I might be being biased because I love timeline movies a lot (ex. FORREST GUMP). This movie will also make you cry from sadness and laughter. I laughed out loud many times and (ALMOST) cried from emotion.
The movie has an all-star cast as well which can sometimes be disastrous (ex.NOTHING BUT TROUBLE). It hits every angle possible and could not have been done any better for what it was. And that is one great, funny movie that is one of my all-time favorites.

Last year I had the opportunity to contemplate Unfamiliar As Folk through my dvd subscription. It took me all of half an episode to be twisted on this heartbreaking, comic, dramatic, and serious peer at contented life in Pittsburgh among a diminutive group of conclude friends. I won’t try to rehash five seasons worth of this present in a review, but I will say this: This indicate was intention ahead of its time. Derived from the British series of the same name, it served as a model for American shows when the only tickled characters on TV were Will and Jack and Ellen. Irregular as Folk demonstrated that America was ready to have a just potrayal of delighted and lesbian life and worship onscreen.

Where this display sparkles is in its dealing with life, esteem, relationships, drug addiction, the struggles of delighted teens and coming out, sex, dating, and discrimination against gays and lesbians. The acting is beneficial, showcased by Hal Sparks, Gale Howard, Randy Harrison, and Sharon Gless among others, and the cast developed their characters for the last 5 years, making them seem at times more actual than not. Is it exaggerated at times? Yes, unbiased as a prove like Sex and the City is, but Weird As Folk is more heartfelt and emotional than that reveal could ever be. QAF was also never disquieted to sigh a shadowy or painful record, reminding everyone that life is not always incredible.
The box station extras for the last are quite noble, with lots of commentaries, character and actor bios, deleted scenes, and outtakes. The DVD region releases May 30. The final season is only 13 episodes, but the note manages to wrap the series up in a procedure satisfying to the fans, with an ending they have been hoping for since the first episode of Season 1.[...] Savor the final season of this big series. Highly Recommended.

From the graphic sex scenes to the drama of dealing with the prejudice that peaceful haunts America, this expose is so mettlesome and I give Showtime a enormous thumbs up for having the balls to engage on such a astronomical risk as Peculiar As Folk. This ghost is out for revenge..not unprejudiced the near through the TV and poop panic ya to death kind. I’m talking about the whole enchalada. The last time I’ve seen a ghost this pissed off it was..hell I can’t remember the last time I saw a ghost that pissed off.
A nice twist of events..and no I’m not talking about the ending.
I mean the portion where we really behold who was to blame for all of the mayhem.
So genre fans..not impartial Japanese Scare Genre Fans either..rejoice. Here is a ghost myth to wrap your bed sheet around.
Okay, none of my reviews would be complete without a runt negativity.
At times, the movie did feel as if it were a itsy-bitsy been there..done that.Especially with the ghost being so Ringuish like. The final scene was not as explorative or explained as it should have been. I mean, give us a atomize..we unprejudiced sat through 2 or more hours of watching this womens family glean killed off in hellish ways and now it ends on a made for TV movie instant replay.
Do not let these qualms cessation you from watching this movie. It is
a non conclude spooky walk and one you will be pleased that you got off sane and sound when its over.
Just a hint..If your daughter all of a sudden grows exact attached to a Cello..Ship that sucker to Bangkok. The Cello, I mean not your daughter.
Once again, Korea has given their viewers a glorious film in terms of cinematography. In fact, I procure most Korean films these days visually splendid. However, this has never been a plight. What many of these dismay films lack are proper scares. Distinct, ambiguity is nice once in awhile, and the revenge factor works now and then. But how about something totally different? Now, in all fairness, I do fill that Korean anxiety and suspense films are serene a notch above what we in America churn out on a daily basis. But, these films are becoming so formulaic, that I accumulate it hard to really like many of the films coming out of the Korean fright industry these days. That is not to say that some viewers will not like this film.
For me the film itself lacks the suspense and that I really seek forward too in this genre. Having written this, I will write that “Cello” is better than many films that have been released in new years from Korea–yet that is not saying mighty, as so many are so similar. Yes, they are considerable better than most of the dismay films here in the States, but one keeps hoping that they will acquire a breakout with some really spicy and scary films that will hold the world with the same fresh quality that their dramas, and suspense films have been able to do. Moreover, the talent in both the acting, and the directing is definitely there. Yet, by continuing to churn out the same formulaic dread films at a like a flash rate, they are going to suffer the same fate that American fear films now salvage themselves in: Old-fashioned and turgid.
“Cello” is not that dreadful of a film. If anything it is watchable. I would fair like something a itsy-bitsy bit more than “well it was worth a study.” Anyway, the films sage is more like a drama, with very dinky to non-existent fright. The film centers around a woman named Hong Mi-ju (Hyeon-a Seong) who is a mature Cello player. Due to a tragic car accident, she injures her hand—and as a result, she gives up playing the Cello, and instead becomes a music instructor. [One more thing I would like to add, the Korean horror/suspense genre has aesthetic worthy played out the classical music in their films, however, the sound of the cello is beautiful]. Further, there is something that quiet haunts Mi-ju in regards to her past: For it was in this car accident that her salubrious friend and cello rival Tae-yeon Kim (Da-an Park) was also killed.
Trying to forget this bad incident and acquire on with her life, she finds herself saddled with a difficult student who is upset with the grade she has been given. Given a cassette tape from an unknown source, her past begins to haunt her again. Is Mi-ju being insecure by the spirit of her dumb rival? And what about the student? How does she fit in? But there is more to the account. With a fresh servant in the house who is restful, and a daughter who begins learning how to play the cello, the film veers into more of a dramatic suspense film with the various characters that are introduced into the film. The film does slip a bit, and plays out more like a drama. And if you have seen Korean apprehension or thriller films you will watch there is nothing really current here. Once again, this is not a unpleasant film, but it is not a qualified film either. Somewhere in between. I recommend that viewers rent the film first. It may not appeal to many viewers. [Stars: 2.5]

Movie Title: Captains and the Kings Captains and the Kings is available for streaming or downloading. |
I first saw this astounding miniseries when it made its debut on NBC in the descend of 1976, and I recently bought and watched the video place of the series. After so many years, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the unhurried Richard Jordan’s portrayal of Joseph Armaugh. Armaugh, the penniless Irish immigrant boy at the launch of the series(It begins in Current York Harbor in 1857) ultimately became one of the nation’s most wealthiest and mighty men, and ultimately paid a heavy personal brand for his arrogance, and obsession with attempting to effect his eldest son the first Irish Catholic President of the United States. As you gape the series, you can’t but encourage impress the similarities between Jordan’s fictional Armaugh and the real-life Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. Jordan should have received an Emmy for his handsome portrayal of the hot-tempered and driven Irishman who wanted control over everything and everybody. Patty Duke was trustworthy as Joseph Armaugh’s wife, who turned to the bottle to see solace from a husband who did not fancy her, and eventually went insane when tragedy intervened and took a Son who died in the Spanish American war of 1898. Blair Brown did a astounding job playing Joseph’s mistress, whose failure to order her son Courtney of the identity of his staunch father, resulted in tragedy for the Daughter of Joseph Armaugh. And the slack astronomical Henry Fonda had a brief role as an pleasant and well-known Senator who felt he had no choice but to purchase his have life after Armaugh’s dispicable map to blackmail the safe Senator unless he dropped his succor of a Labor reform bill (which would have nick into the profits of Armaugh, and his much cronies) . Before the Senator died, he left Armaugh a message in which he cursed him and his family. And before the ruin of this series(It ends in the unhurried Spring or Summer of 1912,) the curse robbed Joseph Armaugh of objective about his entire family(and his only terminate friend) until he is seen alone sitting in his broad mansion, pondering the heavy ticket he had to pay. Other actors in the mini series include the slow Vic Morrow (Sergeant Chip Saunders of the 1960s WW2 series Combat) as Senator Tom Hennessey, Armangh’s detested enemy and ironically his Father-in-Law(whom he eventually destroyed!) and Robert Vaughn as Joseph Armaugh’s business colleague, Charles Desmond. Desmond was one of the individuals who helped Armaugh to conclude even more power by sponsoring his participation in a group of great and wealthy men who ruthlessly exercise their power to control events to get even more wealth and power, regardless of the cost. And you’ll contemplate as I did when I originally watched the series that anyone who opposes these men will pay a heavy and bloody effect. A superbly acted, and fast-pace eye at one man’s attainment of wealth and power, and the tragic mark ultimately paid. I strongly suggest that anyone who is even remotely fervent in mid 19th to early 20th Century America pick this series based on Taylor Caldwell’s unique as it effectively weaves fictional characters like Armaugh, and the others into the tapestry of American life from 1857-1912. A honorable job all-around! Enjoy
Based on Taylor Caldwell’s new, this 1976 NBC production came on the coattails of ABC’s earlier success with “Rich Man, Dreadful Man,” and solidified the term “mini-series” in broadcast language. And it is a elegant and stylish production cemented with pleasant writing, superior acting and the message that even power and wealth carry a notice, sometimes too high. “Captains and the Kings” was reviewed in comparison to the real-life Kennedy clan, and maybe so. Composed, the action begins on an America-bound ship on which the mother of a young Joseph Armagh and two younger siblings dies, leaving the adolescent Joseph in charge. And assume charge he does, soon setting money and power as his goals. Joseph collects both in heaps but, by film’s waste, with Joseph then an traditional man, learns the devastating cost to him personally. The unhurried Richard Jordan is terrific as the powerbroker Joseph, and the supporting cast is unparalleled, headed by Patty Duke’s Emmy turn as Joseph’s wife. Her fate is insanity triggered by an arranged marriage with a man who doesn’t worship her, the loss of two children and alcoholism. The series also introduced us to Blair Brown, who went on to a haunting portrait as Jacqueline Kennedy in the 1983 mini-series, “Kennedy,” and on series television in “The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.” Here, Ms. Brown is the “other woman” in Joseph’s life, but she pulls it off with sympathy. As for Perry King, as Joseph’s son seeking to be the country’s first Irish Catholic president, there’s no escaping the inevitable comparison to the real-life Irish Catholic who went after – and got – the presidency. Strongly written, well acted and lavishly produced, “Captains and the Kings” is a safe share of entertainment.

In 1937, before America entered the War, the Japanese invaded the city of Nanking, China. Most of the privileged people fled. The less fortunate were trapped. Detestable atrocities were committed. More than 200,000 people were brutally slaughtered and more than 20,000 women were raped. However, if it were not for a daring group of Westerners who considered it their mission to aid the people and therefore did not soar, there might have been even more carnage.

This grand documentary tells this tale, based on the diaries and letters from those few committed Westerners. Most of them were missionaries and the one woman, Minnie Vautrin, ran a girls’ college. There was also a German businessman who was a Nazi. In addition to interviews with some survivors, as well as historical footage, the filmmaker former a staged reading of the diaries and letters of these Westerners by a variety of professional actors as a way to thunder this myth. Woody Harrelson is one of these actors as well as Mariel Hemmingway. Jurgen Prochnow was cast in the role of John Rabe the German businessman who, at one point, wishes he could let Adolph Hitler know about these Japanese outrages because he considered Hitler a compassionate man who would not let such atrocities exist.
The filmmakers did an suitable job of organizing a vast amount of material. The film was well paced, definite, to the point, and didn’t have a wasted word or image. Most of the time there were tears in my eyes and yet the underlying memoir of how the courage of the intrepid few who kept the carnage from being even worse, turned the film into absorbing memoir instead of letting it sink into absolute despair.

This legend is a portion of history that should not be forgotten, and a record of inspiration amidst the despair.
Nanking is a truly large film. I give it nothing by accolades.
I, like many other Westerners, first heard of the Rape of Nanjing ten years ago when Iris Chang released her book Rape of Nanking. I, of course, knew that Japan had been at war with China and that the Japanese Imperial Army had done a number of faulty things in China, but it was this book that really opened my eyes to what Japan did in China and had a major enough execute on me to originate me dedicate my life to the discover of Japanese and Chinese history, literature, and film. While I have become aware that Chang’s book is overblown in some ways, blaming the “Shinto Sub Cult” for the ways the Japanese treated the Chinese, it acted as an distinguished catalyst for historians to truly dig into the exclaim and unearth atrocities that had been hidden by not only the Japanese, but the Chinese Communist Party, and America as well. With a number of scholarly tomes, essays, and translations having been released now, hopefully the world will not only rep a better plan of what happened in China, but why it happened.
Of course, more people are likely to explore a filmic version of the Rape of Nanjing than read a hefty tome, but unfortunately although there are a few runt release documentaries, and the films that have reached a broader audience such as Shadowy Sun: The Nanking Massacre almost revel enough in the gore and bloodshed to build the films more fit to be in someone’s splattercore library than as an principal bit of media.
The documentary Nanking was financed and conceptualized by AOL vice-chairman Ted Leonsis after he read Rape of Nanking on vacation and learned of Iris Chang’s suicide. Instead of honest stringing together news footage, photos, and films of the period, Leonsis and the directors Gutenberg and Dan Sturman casted various American and international actors, including Mariel Hemmingway, Woody Harrelson, Jürgen Prochnow, and Michelle Krusiec, to give deliver to a number of foreign missionaries, businessmen, and doctors who suffered through the Japanese attack upon Nanjing, but did their best to protect the Chinese citizens and military deserters from the brutality of the Japanese soldiers. Also, there are a number of interviews with Chinese survivors of the Rape
Through their roles of reading the diaries of the missionaries George Fitch, Minnie Vautrin, and John Magee, the doctor Bob Wilson, and the Nazi businessman John Rabe, the actors give notify to these mammoth people who risked their very lives to attach the people of the foreign country that had become their home. Through their words, and the tall number of photos and films, the viewer can vicariously experience the travesties they experienced which would shorten all of their lives after the left China.
Nanking is of course quite graphic in its detailing of the suffering of the Chinese people at the hands up the Japanese soldiers, but it also shows the strength of what a few can do against the oppression of many. A friendly albeit horrifying film, it should be added to the libraries of those enthusiastic in history and the bitter relationship between China and Japan

I maintain all 3 of these Shirley Temple sets that have been released so far. The sound quality seems to be going downhill…

All 3 of the DVDs in Volume One were okay. I was very elated with that location. In Volume Two, I noticed that the sound quality in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm was not that mammoth (unexcited voices and comparatively loud music) . In this last volume, the sound was questionable in The Littlest Rebel… but it was nefarious in Dimples. It sounded as if all the actors were talking into pillows. I have watched these films on VHS and the sound is beautiful… perhaps something went heinous when they were achieve onto DVD.
I will say, however, that I absolutely appreciate The Littlest Rebel and The Slight Colonel. They’re probably my favourite Shirley Temple movies, so to derive them both in Volume Three was spacious. I was shy about The Puny Colonel, though. The last scene was originally shot in Technicolor; however, in Fox’s last VHS release of the movie (colourized), they crop the scene! I was so joyful to witness that the beautiful “pink party” scene was included in this version… it’s improbable to explore such an early example of colour in the movies.

As with the other two sets, the colourization of the dismal and white films is trustworthy (worthy better than previous attempts) . However, the sound quality really annoyed me. Had I known it would be so terrible, I would have impartial skipped Dimples and purchased the other two DVDs separately.
I unprejudiced finished watching this volume 3 collection and want to wholeheartedly endorse it.
I had read some reviews that the narrate quality and sound was not so top-notch and was doubtful if I should bewitch it, but bought it all the same as I had enjoyed the other two volumes so great.
Well I was not disappointed at all. The sound quality was very superior. Try listning to it on the stereo option on the on-screen menu.
These are three of her very best films and you will laugh and like them so grand.
My wife never ever heard of Shirley Temple till 2006 when I introduced her to Shirley’s films and now we both are expansive fans and leer forward to these re-releases.
‘The Exiguous Colonel’ and ‘The littlest Rebel’ both have the suitable Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson acting and dancing in sparkling invent with Shirley.
Bill worked out the dance routines in all these three pictures but only stars in the above mentioned two.
No one grabs my attention like Shirley. It’s a whole combination of things like her smile and laughter, her dancing and mannerisms and she cry’s so realistic that you would consider she is really upset (but no it’s unbiased our Shirley doing her stuff, favorable as useual) .
Shirlet Temple is a gale of unusual air in a very faded and cynical world and her films will restore hope and confidence to you in the human speed.
Why not check out her official web space and send her an e-mail. She’s unexcited going strong.

My title explains a lot about my feelings on this DVD. When I ask, “Where’s the rest? ” I’m saying that this ISN’T the COMPLETE first season, but only half of it. This is one of the reasons why I rate it four stars instead of five; now I don’t know where I can earn the rest of the first season, without buying the individual volumes. This fact wasn’t definite when I checked this out, so I’m making it obvious now: THIS IS NOT THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON! Oh, and I should warn you that this DVD comes in a cheap box, as my box broke in the mail; my discs are okay for upright now, but they were loose in a box that I’m not clear how to repair… Now that all of that is off my chest, I shall do my first grading system on the expose itself. Reflect schoolastically, A+ being the best and F- being the worst.

Graphics B+: I’m rating loosely on the graphics because this is a cartoon; therefore, honest about anything goes. The characters are done nice, but the backgrounds lacked consistency. One petite, you have a background mighty like the characters, slightly cartoonish; the next petite you have a background that looks like somebody’s narrate on their camera… This really clashed with everything else once or twice; you’ll probably glimpse this the most during the episode of “Unfair Ball” when the manager speaks to the guy who manages the field. The people in the audience then peer like unfounded cardboard cutouts of the loyal thing… The designers should have stuck with the cartoonish looking crowd.
Characters A: This grade is for the characters themselves; how well their personalities were developed, how likable and diverse they are, how often they appeared, and how discontinuance they advance to their videogame counterparts in terms of personality and stammer. They did a enormous job with the voices; my only complaints are that Sonic’s negate was a touch too high, and Chris sounded like a girl… and for the parents, many of the characters have high pitched recount (Cream for example) . If this sort of thing aggravates you, then rep something else to watch; I didn’t perceive this but my mom did. Now enjoy in mind that this is only half of the first season (it goes all the plan to Beating Eggman Fragment II), so I don’t know how many times the characters actually appeared during the season; I’m grading strictly on the half of the shows I have seen. Speaking of being seen, Eggman was seen a cramped too distinguished. One episode is glowing worthy about him, and it got a exiguous tedious after awhile. He, like Sonic, was also virtually seen in every episode. The though-provoking thing about him, I’d like to mark, is that he picks robots randomly with a slot machine-like thing. It drove me crazy, hoping that the last slot would have a lemon, or something random, rather than confirmation on which robot he should consume (does that eventually happen? ) . Sonic was also seen a lot, but he didn’t drive me nearly as crazy Eggman. It did regain a runt stupid that he ALWAYS is the one to place the day; also, most of the time you survey him napping on Chris’ roof (how did he even glean up there to open with? ) . All of the characters are lovable in their bear draw (even Eggman if he’s stop to someone joking at him), very diverse in personalities, and pertain to the videogames attractive well. My last complaints are that though you sight Immense (the cat fishing with a frog in his lap) in the first episode, he doesn’t boom or even demonstrate up again after that. I’m obvious that left half of the viewers wondering who he even is. Shadow doesn’t even manufacture an appearance, they play the same unusual sexy music each time Rouge shows up and carries out a mission (which isn’t mighty), and there’s one episode about Amy who has such a mushy crush on Sonic that it made me sick (The “Last Resort” episode) …
Buy,Download, Or Stream Sonic X: The New World Saga! Click Here
Plot and Details A-: Comely though-provoking spot. For the time being there’s a miniature too considerable fighting (don’t misfortune, nothing with blood or anything), but I’m not counting off majorly for that because this is the beginning (how else does one accept people’s attention? ) . For the most portion, many of the storylines are cause by putting characters with clashing personalities together; thus producing quite amusing results. What I counted off the most for was lack of detail; whenever the characters did fight, it wasn’t believable that they actually got damage because they weren’t scathed at all. I’m not saying I want blood, but something more along the lines of pokemon injuries. Those who have watched the pokemon cartoons will know what I’m talking about; every time the characters got pain, a “number” tag would appear on them, or they got a shrimp dirty, or even had redness for stuff like swelling. Again, I’m not saying a like seeing people hurt; what I AM saying, is that I want a more believable fight in a cartoon (I’m sorry, even Tom and Jerry received sunless eyes and bandages when they were damage) . The fact that Sonic was hit in the face by a robot and not even scratched, is unprejudiced not believable enough for me.
Overall B+: There aren’t any bonus features (besides previews and internet stuff; not really bonus), it comes in a cheap box, and it’s not even the COMPLETE first season. If you decide to remove this, be warned that you’re really only buying it for the cartoon material; which can actually be a really estimable reason to select it. However, if you can bag something that has a petite better boxing, bonus features, and is actually complete, then you’re wasting your time here.
I was living in Japan when Sonic X was first created, so I got to gaze it in its recent Japanese glory long before America got ahold of it. Unfortunately, 4Kids Entertainment sunk their claws into it, and if you don’t know, 4Kids is snide for butchering anime shows for American audiences. They created an annoying opening song for the American release, as well as casting terrible suppose actors. And of course, they’ve edited scenes and dialogue throughout the whole series for no apparent reason. 4Kids doesn’t acquire in preserving the Japanese culture presented in anime; rather, they re-write it to appeal to American audiences. It’s the case of making money over making quality – 4Kids wants more Americans to be able to recount to the media so they can sell more of it to us. But in doing so, they leave us ignorant of the unique culture the media emerged from.
Sonic X is my accepted of all the Sonic cartoon series released to date, but I refuse to seek this hacked-up American version (or any work of 4Kids for that matter) . I’ll stick to watching Sonic X in Japanese with subtitles. Besides, Sonic is originally a Japanese creation, so it feels more authentic to be watching it in Japanese.

Much has been written and seen about the Beatles landing in America. After winning many fans over worldwide prior to February of 1964, the Beatles were ready to conquer the U.S. although they were not quite prepared for the overwhelming response they received once they arrived. Originally intended for a UK audience, the Maysles brothers’ documentary follows the Beatles from the very moment they landed at JFK airport until they departed for home some two weeks later. Included are highlights from the Beatles’ performances on the Ed Sullivan Note as well as portions of their first American concert at the Washington Coliseum. Gradual the scenes footage from the hotel rooms, the Peppermint Lounge (for a night on the town), press photo shoots, and on the grunt to (and from) Washington, D.C. give an view of how amazingly cessation the Maysles brothers were to the center of it all. Their landmark style of creating documentaries provides an fantastic “glide on the wall” perspective. There is no narration and there are no formal interviews. The film lets the event whisper for itself as it captures the action quite naturally and spontaneously. Nothing is staged and the film provides a most intimate search for at the Beatles’ interaction with each other as well as with the excitement of Beatlemania. For those of us born too unhurried to inspect and experience the mania, this is our link to the past and a glance at the beginning of a very distinguished revolution in pop music and culture.
The re-release of this considerable documentary provides a noticeable improvement over the unique version. There is now an audio commentary by Albert Maysles. Furthermore, there is a 51-minute interview with him which includes his presentation of a handful of outtakes from the modern film. One necessary highlight of the personal interview includes Maysles’ discussion of how his camera was accidentally turned on at the Washington Coliseum concert. Without a second opinion, he propped it up on his shoulder (without security seeing him) . His brief footage provides a very rare thought of how a Beatle fan saw and “heard” the Beatles play. It’s very distinct from the footage that fans enthusiastic in listening to the expose simply could not do so. Other involving highlights include recorded comments from teenagers and adults on the street and at JFK airport.
The drawbacks to be celebrated about this DVD are the result of other previous DVD releases including the Ed Sullivan Presents the Beatles DVD position and The Beatles Anthology. The Sullivan region contains ALL of the shows in their entirety while this release only includes portions of shows. The Anthology location contains a marvelous segment of the Coliseum concert taken from an absolutely pristine film print and not the more current well-worn copy. This release collected contains the frail footage. It would have been nice to gaze a bonus feature containing the complete Coliseum concert from the master print. However, this DVD is the modern documentary and the integrity is maintained throughout. It’s principal to trace that the Maysles brothers did not have permission to film in either the CBS studios for the Sullivan shows or in the Washington Coliseum. (One other highlight on the extra footage is Paul McCartney trying to reach to the brothers’ relieve when security blocked them from the CBS studio for the first note.) A color booklet is included with a handful of photos and quotes from each of the Beatles; however, perhaps Apple could have designed a better booklet to include reprints of news articles and reviews from 1964, transcripts of Beatle interviews, and, perhaps, a reprint of the diary of events from Effect Lewishon’s Beatles Narrative.

This is definitely a treat for Beatle fans and a enormous example of how to perform a quality documentary. I also recommend the Maysles brothers’ production, Gimme Shelter, where they lift the challenging and controversial events surrounding the Rolling Stones 1969 tour, including the tragedy at Altamont.
This is an fascinating documentary of The Beatles’ first U.S. visit. What makes it so though-provoking are their performances on the Ed Sullivan point to, which are captured here. Digitally remastered, this early television footage has been expertly restored, enabling the viewers to peer and hear The Beatles, as they first appeared on American television.

Cheeky and exhuberant, The Beatles, occasionally off key but having the time of their lives, have not lost the capacity for knocking the socks off the viewer, as they are brimming over with vitality and the joy of life. They are truly astonishing to view, as well as hear. Fortunately, the video covers all their performances on Ed Sullivan, and what a treat they are! It is gloomy to believe that already two of them, John and George, are no longer with us.
The film documents a more innocent and simple time. It captured The Beatles on the threshold of international fame. It memorialized for all time their first U.S. visit with footage shot in railroad cars, hotel rooms, and limousines. Some of it is somewhat self-conscious, and some of it is waggish fun. It also memorialized the reactions of their fans. The film is a daily cinema verite testament to that first visit.

This is a very splendid documentary that is well worth having soley for the performances of The Beatles. There are over thirteen of them, and the tracks have been digitally remastered for your listening pleasure. Overall, however, the documentary lacks some cohesion, due to the cinema verite nature of the film. Unexcited, it is a worthwhile documentary to have, if only for those astonishing Ed Sullivan performances. If one wants a historical overview of The Beatles, one may also wish to opinion the more in depth and complex documentary, “The Compleat Beatles”.

My title is a cliche but in this case it’s the only phrase to utilize. The version of this movie available now, with its extra disc rotund of stout bonus material, is an example of how to bring DVD format to its highest potential. First of course there’s the movie, and its director Sergio Leone. Every Leone movie I’ve seen–Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Obedient Terrible and Gruesome, Once Upon a Time in America–is fabulous, but this tops them all. Imagine the year 1969: what a ample time to be a western film lover. You had this, and Sam Peckinpah’s Wild Bunch in the same year. Astounding. Anyway, it’s impossible to list all the tall scenes, so I’ll stick with the first. If you care for the credit sequence you’ll admire the movie; it’s not for everybody, however. So those credits, mostly soundless except for a windmill creaking, which Leone somehow makes immoral, and one of the minimal details he uses to do authentic mood, are the litmus test. You’ll either esteem the movie or despise it. The scene is built on a genius contradiction: it’s so tense that you want it to demolish, but it’s so beautifully done, so built on image and gesture and stare, that you also hope it never ends. The whole movie is that exquisite. And the cast–wow. Everyone is at top create, but check out Henry Fonda as the leanest meanest bastard imaginable, but also someone you can’t avoid enjoying because it is the Astronomical Mr. Fonda, with Leone getting maximum mileage out of stop ups of Fonda’s ice-blue eyes, as unforgiving as a western sky, generally acting like the amiable stalwart figure he always plays, until he shoots itsy-bitsy kids and chunky lackeys whom he doesn’t trust because they wear both suspenders and belts: and as Fonda says, how can you trust a man who can’t even trust his possess pants? As the heroine, Claudia Cardinale isn’t unprejudiced elegant she’s palatable, lust-us. And tough. Ogle for the scene where she looks at herself in the mirror when she’s all alone in her house. whose previous residents, her family, have been killed by Fonda and his thugs. Charles Bronson–what an underrated actor. Hazardous yet entirely sympathetic here. He finds wit in his role, knows exactly what the original Leone’s up to and gets in sync with the vision. Jason Robards is incapable of giving a performance less than smart, and this is another highlight in the film. As Cheyenne he is laughable and tough and brilliant, maybe the most complex performance in the movie. There’s so grand more, too–the finest Ennio Morricone soundtrack, killer dialogue, fabulous cinematography. This DVD is establish together so well it’s even a pleasure to peer at the menus–you’ll glimpse what I mean. And all this for under FIFTEEN U.S. DOLLARS. What are you waiting for?
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST is arguably Sergio Leone’s greatest Western, although Clint Eastwood’s three films with him remain among my favorites. Actually, Leone had hoped to have Eastwood in this film as Harmonica, but they were unable to work things out. As it is, I contemplate having Charles Bronson in the role is more effective. It was central to Eastwood’s persona in those three films that he be both a man with no name and with no past, but Harmonica’s character is entirely driven by the past and his need for revenge.
The beginning of this film are among my accepted in the history of film. Leone is arguably the most patient director in the history of film, and is willing to grasp fifteen minutes for something another director would be hate to assume two. The two spacious instances of Leone’s patience are the scene in the uncut version of ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, where he allows a phone to ring thirty or forty times, and here at the beginning, where he takes fourteen minutes to reveal three men waiting to men a relate.
As a whole, this is a far more ambitious project than Leone’s other Westerns. The residence is a bit more legend, the sweep of the film a bit grander, the relations between the characters more complex. Like most of his other films, it was filmed primarily in Europe, but unlike the others, a couple of scenes were actually shot in the United States, in particular in Monument Valley, the signature residence of John Ford, the director most associated with Westerns. He handles characters a bit differently in this than in his earlier films. For instance, Leone ties a musical theme to each of the major characters in the film, worthy as did Prokofiev with “Peter and the Wolf.”

One aspect of the film that is simultaneously a strength and a weakness is the casting. Leone here works with a group of performers he had not worked with before. A couple of the performers are simply bright. Charles Bronson was smart, and his puny, piercing blue eyes lend an eerie intensity to many of his hide moments. The casting of the equally blue-eyed Henry Fonda as a sadistic villain was a stroke of genius, and he manages to compose one of his most memorable roles. I have, however, worry with the other two major performers. Claudia Cardinale was certainly glowing, but she simply does not bring as remarkable to her role that many other actresses would have. Women do not feature prominently in Leone’s films, and that might be because he simply didn’t represent to women as well as men. At any rate, I deem the movie would have been greatly improved with someone else in her role. I had similar problems with Jason Robards. He honest did not radiate the aura of pains that his character was supposed to, and the musical theme that was tied to his character sounded somewhat clownish. I found him to be the most poorly conceived and executed character in the film.
Despite these two cavils, this is an fabulous movie, and is by far one of the most thoughtful, novel Westerns ever made. The ending is perhaps the finest of his many Westerns, as well as one of the most surprising. It easily goes on any list of the greatest Westerns in the history of film.

“Without doubt, one of the most hysterical parodies ever!”

Given the new world political climate, Trey Parker and Matt Stone hit the ball correct out of the park with this film. I haven’t laughed so hard so frequently in a theater in years! This was simply fantastic.
The sheer goofy stare and movement of the deliberately low-tech puppet bodies, combined with their high-tech heads and incredibly justify sets, makes for some truly classic moments. When the World Police thoughtfully swoop down to buy out a handful of terrorist, while simultaneously destroying noteworthy of the surrounding city in the process, you can’t relieve but laugh at the irony. Can you say “collateral wound”?

And the overly extended scene of the two lead puppets though-provoking in the obligatory sex scene had me laughing so uncontrollably that I notion they’d have to assume me out of the theater on a stretcher. Oh my Lord was that amusing. It was one of those rare movie moment that had me laughing days later impartial thinking about it.
Not only do Parker and Stone mercilessly waddle fun at the amusing, over-the-top nature of positive Hollywood filmmakers like Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay (e.g., his nearly unwatchable “Pearl Harbor”), but they also steal the public personas of world leaders like North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il and practically feed them into a wood chipper. How this film didn’t spark an international PR incident with North Korea is honest incredible to me.
What makes their political edge so refreshing and sidesplitting is they’re willingness to hold on everybody, rather than merely bolstering a right- or left-wing concept. And the merciless design they go after Hollywood celeb-activists was profoundly laughable. Too often I’ve been sickened by the overly simplistic mentality that comes from the mouths of obvious actors when they exhaust their plot as public figures to comment on the world affairs. Parker and Stone record acting notables like Penn, Baldwin, Robbins, Sarandon, and Garofalo as complete idiots, who are as easily herded about by Kim Jong-Il as so many sheep. Matt Damon is practically a troglodyte who is so dead that all his brain can manage is to say his name over and over again.
Like “South Park Bigger, Longer and Uncut,” this film has numerous musical numbers that are mature to punctuate the humor of various scenes. The song “America, F**k Yeah!” once again practically had me on the floor, especially when it was uses a second time but with a grand slower beat. The level of adult humor and vulgarity here will probably not do this film superior for puny kids, and worthy of the political edginess may be lost on most teenagers. But if there were a category for “Best Comedy Film,” Parker and Stone would both secure an Oscars, hands down!
Trey Parker and Matt Stone have a fresh ability to blend the nuanced with the sure, to mix cerebral humor with cheap notice gags and fart jokes. If this appeals to you (seek an episode of “South Park” if you are unsure), and you don’t mind having your sacred cows slaughtered and made into taco fillings, this film is a must-see –for repeated viewings.
Mad dictator Kim Jong Il plans to subvert Hollywood and become the megaproliferant of the stars. Who can halt him? Only Team America, a gang of ultra-right cruise marionettes who contemplate Accelerate Limbaugh is suspiciously liberal. But don’t fret, conservatives: Hollywood pinkos and Michael Moore seize a beating, too. Nothing is sacred to Parker and Stone.
Puppets were a indignant choice for a medium, but they are done hysterically. I don’t know what had me laughing more, the whiskey glass soldered to the team leader’s hand, or the understanding of the splinters and friction fire from marionette sex!
The sound track alone makes this film worth it. “Freedom isn’t Free” could have been a actual country hit and Kim singing “I’m so ronery” had my wife blowing her cola out her nose in the theater!
If you are straight-laced, have a terrible sense of humor and can’t admit it, or can’t laugh at yourself, this may not be you’re film. If you’ve got a slightly warped sense of humor, you’ll adore this!
