I gawk and care for a movie like this cause it’s fun and arresting, that’s it!
Okay, I know this is going to be a highly disputed conception, but I reflect this movie is very, very safe. Astronomical, I’d even daresay. And I am a Godzilla fan. I appreciate the Gargantuan Guy from his early masterworks to his campy mid-period to his unusual thrilling outings.

Admittedly, this is not the same Godzilla. But Godzilla himself is a product of the 50s fascination with giant monsters, and this movie is really unprejudiced an homage to all those frail, tremendous monster movies. Anyway, I don’t observe why the universe isn’t mountainous enough for two Godzillas.
A lot of fans hated this honest for the plan. But Tristar had to compose a current version. The stale version would’ve flopped in America. In fact, Godzilla 2000 came out about a year later, and it did abominable. So where were those so-called fans when he really needed them? I submit that there really aren’t that many Godzilla fans. There’s plenty of people who claim to be, but do they really like him or these types of films? Doesn’t seem like it.

Onto the movie. First there’s Godzilla. He’s a terrific special enact. Some people say he doesn’t scrutinize steady. He looks comely darn impressive to me. Realism is a rather droll complaint when you’re talking about a giant lizard running through Unusual York.
The yarn is deceptively simple. You could boil it down to Army vs. Monster, but there’s a creativity here that gets overlooked. The characters (all of whom are well-developed especially considering none are the exact star) are all likable. Their motivations are believable. And their account arcs are solidly connected to the central conflict in a arrangement that doesn’t seem forced.
The action sequences are incredible. I like to deem of them as repugnant versions of mountainous kung fu showdowns. Godzilla isn’t invulnerable in this film, and so when he fights helicopters, rockets, and submarines, I actually felt suspense, even though I knew he wasn’t going down until the destroy of the movie.
The location of Godzilla’s young gives a nice excuse for some human-scaled action. The pacing is expertly handled. At two hours, there’s level-headed a lot crammed in here. The acting is ample. Jean Reno’s French military agent is beautifully understated. And the final demolish of Godzilla is both tragic and satisfying.
I don’t esteem the last shrimp bit, but to me it’s not so worthy an advertisement for a sequel as a wink to those “THE Raze? ” titles at the destroy of those stout old-fashioned movies.
Boy, this is a long review. I guess I’m unprejudiced trying to obtain a case for this underrated and much-maligned film. Personally, I mediate the novel Grand Guy would cherish it. Although I’m distinct his version would demolish a dinky different.

A serious movie that also happens to be pretty funny
Yes, this movie has plenty of funny moments, but there is a very real and sometimes rather touching story that takes precedence over everything that happens. You can’t get through the most serious of situations without the palliative of laughter now and again, and Life actually does tell a serious story. Eddie Murphy proves once again that he is a great actor, and Martin Lawrence was surprisingly good as the more serious of two men sentenced to life in prison for a murder they didn’t commit. One night in 1932, fate brought Rayford Gibson (Murphy), a smooth-talking hustler with big dreams, and Claude Banks (Lawrence) a respectable fellow about to start a good job, together in a New York nightclub. For entirely different reasons, both guys have to face the displeasure of the club owner’s wrath; and so it is that Gibson and Banks end up going on a bootlegging run to Mississippi. One dead man later, and both men are sentenced to life in prison for murder. Since Banks blames Gibson for getting him into all this mess, there relationship varies in quality as the years go by, but gradually a real friendship develops between them. They try to escape several times but end up spending basically their whole lives in prison. Along the way, we meet with several sub-plots involving some of their fellow inmates, but the movie never strays far from the lives of Gibson and Banks. The passage of time is marked by clips of historical events, and some excellent makeup works makes both men look old and worn out as they advance into their senior years.
This is not a prison story of hopelessness, however. While no pardon ever comes their way, justice has a way of willing out eventually, and the final ten minutes of the film are just terrific. Since the story does take place in Mississippi in 1932 and beyond, race plays a major part in the film, but it does not define the movie by any means. There are a number of funny scenes, especially those involving pie and cornbread, and Eddie Murphy will definitely make you laugh – Martin Lawrence sort of plays the heavy here to Murphy’s periodic antics. Some familiar faces pop up in the movie: Rick James plays the New York club owner, Bernie Mac has a relatively minor role, and Heavy D plays a small but important part. Wyclef Jean contributes an original score for the film. The whole cast is excellent, and a very good script keeps the film on pace and lively.
This isn’t Stir Crazy; there are plenty of laughs, but I wouldn’t call this a comedy – Life the movie is funny in the way life itself can sometimes be – laughter can get us through the hard times, but it doesn’t hide the fact that the hard times are there. This movie really deserves more attention than it has received; with its serious underlying quality, it ranks among Eddie Murphy’s most impressive films.
One of the very best comedies of ’99
I’ve seen “Life” twice thus far, and I must concede that it has to be one of the best films to ever cast Eddie Murphy. He and Martin Lawrence are just as emotionally poignant as they are downright hysterical in this memorable comedy/drama of two Prohibition-era guys from Harlem NYC who inadvertently become framed for murder in the Deep South while on a bootlegging run for the local crime boss they each owe debts to back home. They are soon enough sentenced to life imprisonment in a Mississippi chain gang where they share a “Felix and Oscar”-esque relationship that spans 65 years through thick and thin times (including numerous escape attempts). However in the end, they literally become friends for life as they come to terms with their imprisonment. The make-up done by 6-time Oscar winner Rick Baker to transform Murphy & Lawrence from young to old over the course of so many years is the true showstopper of “Life”. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if Mr. Baker garners Oscar #7 come 2000; he and Murphy have been quite a dynamic duo since “Coming to America”. A definite must-see!
Life is funny, Life is great….
This movie is perhaps Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence’s Sistine Chapel. That is a bold statement but this movie is so funny and such a good, well made movie. There are endless funny moments in this movie. I might be being biased because I love timeline movies a lot (ex. FORREST GUMP). This movie will also make you cry from sadness and laughter. I laughed out loud many times and (ALMOST) cried from emotion.
The movie has an all-star cast as well which can sometimes be disastrous (ex.NOTHING BUT TROUBLE). It hits every angle possible and could not have been done any better for what it was. And that is one great, funny movie that is one of my all-time favorites.

After years of seeking out acceptable VHS copies of L’ECLISSE, at last this elusive, enigmatic, haunting film has approach to DVD. To be ravishing, some VHS copies were not so bad-looking, but few were letterboxed, so many viewers have never seen the film in its unique widescreen format. Criterion presents L’ECLISSE in widescreen format and in a shipshape, beautifully restored print. There is a wonderful amount of swiftly flashing in the opening scene, but as we are engulfed in Antonioni’s vision of the world this becomes less noticeable. The soundtrack also has the recessed quality familiar from many Criterion releases, but that can be remedied by a volume boost. Apart from these minor criticisms, this is an exemplary release. It may indeed surpass Criterion’s edition of L’AVVENTURA in terms of the supplementary material.
On disc two, there is a pair of satisfactory features: “The Sickness of Eros” features interviews by Antonioni scholars and associates. These people actually have grand things to say about the film and the director. The other feature, a documentary, “Michelangelo Antonioni: the Contemplate that Changed Cinema” is a perfect example of its kind. There is a lot of footage of the director discussing his films (and saying intriguing things about them) as well as other relevant comments by scholars and collaborators. Of even greater interest are the numerous clips and stills of the director on the residence of many of his works. Both these documentary features are eminently re-playable. There is also an informative, film-length commentary by Richard Pena.

L’ECLISSE seems to sum up the ideas that evolve in Antonioni’s earlier films from LE AMICHE through LA NOTTE. But it also pares down these ideas and renders them in an abstract, or nearly abstract draw. This is why the film is so enchanting for some viewers. From the opening shot, we are in Antonioni’s world: a tranquil still-life of a room and its ordinary contents; the camera pans correct (here we recognize the relieve of the widescreen format) and a shirtsleeve is glimpsed; immediately, it moves and we contemplate Francisco. This opening seems to say: humans are fraction of the world. They live in it, but they are piece of it too. Vittoria is then introduced, first from below, the we are allowed to peruse her whole. The film continues to portion the characters in this plot, cutting off our thought of their complete bodies, as if to say the people themselves are not complete. Vittoria’s first sincere action in the film is to adjust a cramped, empty report frame and to advance through it to depart some objects on the desk within the scope of the frame. This is another typical Antonioni theme. He expresses it many times with frames, both picture- and window, and with doorways and arches. Humans need to observe a shape to reality, a formality of some kind, to fabricate it comprehensible.
Monica Vitti is Vittoria in this 1962 film. She is the ultimate Antonioni existential protagonist. Presumably sometime shortly before the film begins, Vittoria has become aware of a basic human dilemma: life is constantly in a plot of change; we try to beget onto emotions and ideas, but the forward-moving nature of existence can render them meaningless’ also, there is some mystery under the surface of life. Vittoria ends a relationship that clearly was ‘going nowhere’, mighty to the terror of her nearly immobile lover (Franscisco Rabal) . She leaves him and begins a wandering slouch, an exploration that makes up the body of the film. Along the arrangement, she will acknowledge in different ways to her gradually evolving set of mind. One response Antonioni’s characters often have is to try to hurry, symbolically perhaps to transcend their existence. Vittoria accepts an invitation from a friend to soar to Verona and relieve to Rome in a private plane. The experience is exhilarating, but ultimately empty. She also dresses in native African costume and dances quite well in an attempt to transcend her normal world and normal self. This too is ultimately devoid of staunch meaning. Very typically of an Antonioni protagonist, Vittoria allows herself to inspect the possibility of romance as a kind of speed or distraction. She meets, and apparently becomes emotionally eager with the impossibly gorgeous, but empty Piero (Alain Delon) . Through his association with Vittoria, Piero too becomes aware of the incompleteness of life. At one telling point, Vittoria and Piero are crossing a street; she stops and says “siamo in media” (“we are halfway”) with a obvious portent in her protest and expression. The film is made up of many minute moments like this that seem to inform the whole of it. Human experience is only “halfway”—there is more to life than what we peer or mediate we know. Something else lies under the surface. Antonioni explores this theme in all his films, most famously four years later in BLOW-UP. Here, the style of the film is so rarefied and so nearly abstract that it may assume more than one viewing to like it. Vittoria and Piero, together, realize that truly connecting, finding a meaning beyond the fleeting sexual one (which is yet another empty attempt to transcend) may be impossible. So Antonioni, in perhaps the most noted sequence, permanently removes the characters from the film. As if to emphasize the universality of his theme and the interchangeablility of human experience, we are shown a woman who closely resembles Vitti, but who passes anonymously from the frame as she did. The notorious wordless sequence creates an uncanny, almost unpleasant sense of anticipation: we feel we are waiting for something to happen, for someone to come in this neighborhood of unfinished buildings, circulating city buses, and symmetrical crosswalks, but only a set of pure being seems to exist now. It’s almost an Eastern diagram of looking at the world. The film leaves the viewer with a lot to inspect and calls many support to recognize more in it than can be addressed in a brief review like this.
This modern Criterion DVD of L’ECLISSE should not be overlooked by anyone involved in recent film.
Michelangelo directed a trilogy of sorts in the 1960s, beginning with his breakthrough film L’Avventura, continuing with La Notte, and ending with my personal common, L’Eclisse (The Eclipse) . All were preoccupied with the theme of alienation, and all featured more or less neurotic and disaffected performances from the striking actress Monica Vitti (as a blond in L’Avventura and L’Eclisse, and as a brunette in La Notte) . L’Eclisse begins with the Vitti character’s romantic breakup, and continues with her affair with a young stockbroker. The affair is destined for failure, however, as she ultimately finds it impossible to experience meaningful contact with other people. There are several considerable sequences in the film – the wearisome fatigue of the opening breakup scene, raucous and frenetic scenes in the stock market, even Vitti and her friends dressing up and dancing as African natives! The most striking for me, however, is the final several minutes, in which the lovers have agreed to meet but neither shows up, and we seek a series of deserted spots (mostly locales from earlier scenes) in a mounting crescendo of emptiness and apathetic apprehension. The stark and impersonal “original” sixties architecture, headlines about nuclear fear, and a quietly eerie and horrific musical regain combines to invent this one of the most much sequences ever filmed. It shocks me to learn that when originally released in America the sequence was nick as extraneous!

It’s a shame that this masterpiece is currently out of print. There are copies floating around that are dubbed from British sources, and there are also some from an American release several years ago, which had generally very honorable represent and subtitle quality. I can only hope that someone, maybe Criterion, chooses to release L’Eclisse on DVD – I would give my suitable arm to collect it!

Star Maps is filled with the promise of dreams
I saw Star Maps twice in the theaters, and still can’t get it out of my mind. I keep checking to see when the sell-through VHS will be available (at an affordable price). The film’s music is top-notch. This may be a so-called Indie film, but it’s performances, especially from Douglas Spain as Carlos, the young man with a dream, are believable. This a gritty, realistic picture about people struggling to stay focused and to survive. Carlos wants to be an actor; he sells maps to the stars homes in Beverly Hills. He believes that all he needs is one chance at the acting brass ring. To earn more money he is forced to hustle, but he knows that what he deeply wants is to be an actor. A touching, poignant movie. There is nudity and adult situations, and even some comedy, but this is a strong film and well worth viewing.
Touching , Heartbreaking story
To understand this film you should understand whats its like to be from a family like this. Themovie played out like a home movie for me. The first reviewer from Mexico, is typical in his narrow mindedness about how “chicanos” live. How do you clearly represent a culture? This young boy was not “abused” by his father, he was ABUSED by his father. THis happenes a lot, in Mexico and America. The use of Cantinflas was not to link the characters to their Mexican roots,it was used by the mentally ill Mother as her escape from her painful existence. I don’t know how the first reviewer lives or if he ever visited LA,and i don’t mean the tourist locations, the real Barrios with real Chicanos, but, some lives are aggresive and crude. Everything in this movie has substance. It is not sexy though. You care so much about Carlito, that it is stomach churning watching him be voilated. Sure life is not this difficult for everyone, but this is what its like when you are f-up by your parents, and unless you stop the cycle yourself you end up being f-ed by everyone else too. This is fact, ive seen it with my own eyes. Why esle do Street childern exist? Besides all,that the music rocks in this film and makes it unique. All the musical interludes are so appropriate for each seen. Miguel Arteta is genuis.
Breaks the Latin Mold
Most reviewers have missed that Star Maps steps out from the Latino film routine of re-establishing the father as the rightful patriarch (Selena, La Familia, Rooster, ad nauseum). This is more than just another gay boy/prostitute movie; in narrative terms, it’s a revolution.

A woman from the Middle East struggles to make a living on the West Bank but when she gets a notice that tells her that she has won a lottery for a United States Green Card her life takes a dramatic turn. Now she must decide if she and her son should come to America in search of a better life. She decides to make the trip and leaves her mother and brother behind but she soon understands that that life in Amreeka is not at all what she had imagined it to be. She is the victim of prejudice wherever she goes as does her son and her relatives in the Midwest that she stays with. What we learn from the film is the importance of family and that we make sacrifices for those that are important to us. We see what life is life for those living in “Palestine” and also what it is like for those who emigrate. We also see Arabs portrayed as people and not as terrorists and we see the racism that they feel.
The movie is warm-hearted and humorous. Muna (Nisreen Faour) and Fadi (Melkar Muallem), her sixteen year old son are our main characters and we follow them from the checkpoints of the West bank to the racial prejudice in a small town near Chicago. Muna is from Bethlehem and she really wants a better life for her and her child. We see that not all Arabs are Muslims and we learn that Arabs in Bethlehem are Christians. The movie begins by showing us the tight knit family and this is a contrast to American life in many cases. However our mother was not prepared for life in America and we see that the vision of this country being a land “of milk and honey” does not ring true. We see persecution based on ethnicity and we see how Arab immigrants are treated here. This is not a story of prejudice but it is a story of reality. This is also not a political film but a look at something we know too little about. The actors are quite good and I must say that as an Israeli with my own inborn prejudices, I found this film to be quite good.
A masterpiece
“Amreeka” is a masterpiece: heartbreaking, moving, complex, fierce, tender. Extraordinary writing, sublime acting, and haunting visual and aural landscapes. This work brings to one of the most tragic situations in contemporary history a most sophisticated, generous moral imagination: outrage, understanding, anguish, humor.
“Amreeka” will transform every viewer’s percepts. Please see it.
A Palestinian immigrant in Bush-Cheney America
Amreeka is a charming film about the modern Arab immigrant experience. Built around a cast of well imagined and sensitively portrayed characters and set in the initial days of the US invasion of Iraq, it follows a Palestinian mother and her teenage son as they learn to sort through the problems typical of many immigrants – loss of a support network, dependence on locals or established immigrants, the inability to transfer qualifications and skills, and indifference or even hostility from members of the host culture. The experience is exacerbated in Amreeka by the ethnic chauvinism fomented and unleashed in the run-up to the Bush-Cheney invasion – a threatening note left in a mailbox, canceled contracts, disappearing customers, as well as verbal and physical intimidation. Bitter as that experience was, and as tempting as it may have been to lecture, the director never falls into polemicizing but stays focused on the characters. One of the mother’s unexpected sources of friendship and help in navigating her new world is a Polish Jew. Practically speaking a one-woman production from writer-director Cherien Dabis, Amreeka is a lovely film that falls flat only in the end. It seems the story does not so much reach a conclusion as it does to simply end, leaving you with the impression there may have been more to tell.

And here we are, season twenty. Yes, after twelve of the previous nineteen seasons have been released on DVD, Fox decides to mess with our minds and skip ahead a few notches! And why?

Well, best guess: HD. Yes, this is the first season of “The Simpsons” to include episodes shot in HD. Not all of them are, but many are, and it makes a incompatibility!
Quality wise, this season was up there with most of the last few: mostly worthy episodes, a few huge ones and only one or two that were “meh”. I don’t generally laugh out loud at the explain anymore, but I do chuckle quite a bit and usually arrive away having had a top-notch time.

“Mypods and Boomsticks” – Remember the “American Dad!” episode where Stan though the neighbors were terrorists? Yes? Then you’ve seen this one. Also, Lisa gets a portable mp3 playing contrivance.
“The Burns and the Bees” – Burns tries to be an arresting and current millionare with hilarious results! Ok, they weren’t THAT hilarious, but was a worthy episode anyhow.
“Lisa the Drama Queen” – Lisa meets another girl who is rather disturbingly wrapped up in a fantasy world of her contain creation.
“Occupy My Life, Please” – Welcome to the exiciting world of HIGH DEF SIMPSONS! Honestly, I don’t remember distinguished about this episode beyond that, which is not a well-behaved trace. Apparently it involves spaghetti.
“How the Test Was Won” – Not a sizable episode, but some comical moments watching Homer deal with the fact that, for a while, the family is uninsured!
“No Loan Again, Naturally” – When the Simpsons lose their home, Flanders buys it and rents to them, with hilarious results! Easily one of the better episodes of the season.
“Gone Maggie Gone” – A reasonably ok grasp on “The da Vinci Code”-style of memoir. Not big, but ok.
“In the Name of the Grandfather” – The Simpsons visit Ireland, only to gain out that it’s not what they expected!
“Wedding for Danger” – Mix in the “Saw” movie franchise and Sideshow Bob and what do you derive? … Well, you gain this. Which is glowing trustworthy!
“Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” – Moe develops a itsy-bitsy jam in his love-life.
“The Proper, the Dark and the Drugly” – Bart falls in admire, Lisa obesses over global warming, and I lose interest. Not a unpleasant episode, but certainly not spacious.
“Father Knows Worst” – Homer becomes a helicopter parent and Marge discovers the joy of the sauna!
“Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D’oh” – Homer rents an apartment in an upscale neighborhood so the kids can befriend a better school. Guest staring Anton Chigurh as the hilarious school inspector!
“Four Astronomical Women and a Manicure” – Another anthology episode. This one is better than most, and features a astronomical bewitch on Ayn “What a hot guy!” Rand. The lowest-rated episode in the show’s history, but one I rather liked!
“Coming to Homerica” – Ogdenville experiences a massive crisis, resulting in them bringing their Norweigan ways to Springfield! Beware, America, of the ludefisk menace on your border!
The extras will probably be what we usually have with these DVDs. Question a lot of commentaries and deleted scenes, and probably something talking about the show’s transition to HD.
Overall this is a genuine season and one I explore forward to owning!
The Simpsons have been around for more than 20 years now and it`s pleasurable to say that if you ever surfed your television you came across them. It paved the intention for other spicy comedy shows of its genre, it has more than 400 episodes to its credit, won a few awards, it`s been on air since seemingly forever and there`s plenty more to say about it. There have been some complaints about the decline of the reveal ever since the beginning the 00`s. It`s hard to prefer a season where the decline really began but it is fair that the display is not as generous as it was I`ll admit it, but I believe it`s aloof splendid and I unexcited indulge in it. Since some time each season has a few astronomical episodes mixed with a few suited ones and some not-so-good one, season 20 is no different.
Now I won`t be doing an episode list because some other reviewers will hold care of that. But I really liked a few episodes like “Eeny Teeny Maya Moe” in which Moe has a recent romance, “No Loan Again, Naturally” was titanic with Ned Flanders helping the Simpsons trough difficult time as they reached bankruptcy and this season`s “Treehouse of Alarm XIX” was very noble and the allusion to Charlie Brown was smart. The worst episode of this season is perhaps the worst in the show`s history “Four Stout Women and a Manicure”, another Simpsons twist on history but this one proves to be the worst yet. The season was mostly gracious.
You will seek a change in the visual style of the explain, it is lovely remarkable the same but somehow it’s different. It features more technology which turns out to be very droll and the visual style has changed a runt it’s like the explain has gotten a facelift, and I don’t believe it distress after so many years you’re go to change at some point. You will also seek the current title sequence for the explain, I like it but I miss Homer’s sob from the novel! The Simpsons are now in HD and it looks very wonderful.I`d like to consider that the box of this season will be different than season 11 and 12`s accordion style but no one really knows now. They should really believe doing something else or return to the older boxes format I never hear anyone complain about those. I know how they want to do an eco-friendly packaging but it`s obviously not a hit with most fans, it didn`t view so valid and I didn`t like how it scratched my discs and I`m distinct I wasn`t the only one.
Season 20 is not terrible really but it fair doesn’t compare well to the earlier seasons. I don’t laugh as I mighty as I archaic to while watching the indicate but I calm net it sharp and worth watching. There were some very honorable episodes and this season was better than a few of the previous ones. I don’t know why they are releasing this one ahead of the others (13-19), yes it’s the 20th anniversary but level-headed this will compose some fans exasperated. I’ll give season 20 three stars it was a obedient season. So will I be buying? Well yes because it’s unexcited better than no Simpsons in my view and if you don’t like the reveal at this point then don’t bother with it that’s all.

I objective saw this movie at Webster University in St. Louis and can’t hold it is not playing in mainstream theaters across the country. It is a well crafted documentary that deserves wide spread availability.

This film is Brian’s photographs, video, audio recordings, and emails from his time in Sudan as an investigator in the stay fire agreement and his return visit to Chad. The images in the film are nothing short of repulsive, graphic and deeply disturbing on a level I never knew existed. If you assume you “know” about the position in Darfur, you haven’t seen anything until you sit through 85 minutes of systematic genocide, rape, torture, and mutilation.
This film is Brian’s personal memoir of the atrocities of the Sudanese government (whom is Arab), and its calculated genocide toward the dismal Africans within its borders. It even goes after those that have fled to neighboring Chad.

But it isn’t honest Brian showing you a recount and saying ‘See, unpleasant things are happening here.’ He explains the unusual historical highlights of Sudan and its government, the presence of China and its oil pipeline, the Russian and Chinese supplied weapons, the Janjaweed’s relation to the government of Sudan, the Sudan Liberation Movement, and other players. You score to glimpse the reaction he received upon his return to America: how the Residence Department asked him NOT to present his pictures (!) ; how the Sudanese government sent out people to suppose against him; how the Original York Times helped give him a enlighten and pick up his pictures out to the public.
Excellent production, editing and camera work. I would have liked to have heard some of the politicians snort on the topic. And possibly some more on the links between Sudan, China, Russia and Saudi Arabia, and how they are all in bed with each other. It was briefly discussed how China is heavily dependent on Sudan’s oil, but does not elaborate the fact that they need massive amounts of oil in order to supply the U.S. (among other countries) with goods. Though, I guess that this could all be summed up in a documentary of equal length by itself.
The station in Darfur, Sudan is a complex and dirty site that can go on for decades. I didn’t question an 85 little documentary to screen it all, but it does an safe job of getting the word out that the Sudanese government is committing widespread genocide.
I hope you all find a chance to leer it: you will not be disappointed; you will not toddle away unaffected.
We shared this video during this past summer preview (2007) for the Rochester, MN community. I am thrilled to examine it out for mass distribution. For every family with kids (and especially with College Students) I recommend this video as a gift. America has enough doctors, lawyers, befriend workers and more…challenge your kids to survey and learn and to give their life overseas.

King Corn is kind of like Natty Size Me’s diminutive brother. It traces the pervasive influence of corn on original America, including the obesity epidemic and the fact that Iowa is growing trillions of bushels of *non-edible* corn to continue receiving lucrative government subsidies. College buddies Ian and Curt, both from the east glide, gaze that they both had distant relatives from the same microscopic town of Greene, Iowa. Ian and Curt choose to go to Iowa and plant one acre of corn, following it through its lifecycle, including where it goes after the harvest.

The film starts off slowly as the reasons for the coast are explained. The prerequisite talking heads introduce some scary factoids about how Americans are literally made of corn; if you do a hair analysis, it’s like a diet diary, and the tall majority of the American diet (corn-fed beef, mercurial foods and processed foods) contains corn derivatives. Great of the corn we ingest is in the guise of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), a cheaper alternative to sugar that is produced via a scary chemical conversion entertaining several toxic acids. HFCS has been directly linked to the new obesity crisis and its impact on Type II Diabetes (the body processes HFCS differently from table sugar) . Prior to the 1970s, hardly any company old HFCS due to its high cost. But after then-Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz did away with the ragged Original Deal market control policies in favor of quickly expansion in 1973, there was a constant surplus of cheap (and non-edible) corn, fueling the posthaste expansion of the corn syrup industry. Here’s a posthaste test: journey into any convenience store and count how many items maintain corn, specifically corn syrup. The list includes positive choices like soda and candy, but you’ll also collect HFCS in deli meats, breads, ketchup, scrape bask in, spaghetti sauce, and cough syrup. Oh yes, and one main variety of corn grown in Iowa (Liberty) is genetically modified, as is at least one ingredient in HFCS manufacturing.

In this respect, it’s kind of a gentler version of Supersize Me; there’s no shock value for the most piece. Also mentioned is the disastrous consequence of converting cattle from grazing animals to force-fed confined ones. Cattle normally forage for a plant-based diet, but it is far more obedient to bring them up to market weight by forcing them to stand quiet and eat continuously. In addition, the acids point to in corn cause deadly ulcers for the cows, who are slaughtered before developing acidosis. The raze result is that 70% of the antibiotics in the US are conventional on livestock (antibiotics combat both the acidosis and the infections resulting from confinement) . Literally everything at McDonald’s contains corn: your hamburger is corn-fed, the bun contains HFCS, your soda contains HFCS, the French fries are fried in corn (or soybean) oil, and your ketchup and jam contains HFCS. Ditto for most vending machine foods, frozen dinners, and anything you don’t obtain from scratch. It’s extremely difficult to elope buying foods containing corn, since a variety of pseudonyms are worn, including baking powder, caramel color, dextrose, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, stearic acid, and vanilla, making it a nightmare for anyone with corn allergies.

Perhaps the most effective element is that of nostalgia. Ian and Curt also capture time to accumulate their long-lost relatives in Greene, and to contemplate on the quick changes in our recently agrarian society that have forced farmers to hold massive farms harvesting non-edible corn. In other words, the farmer can’t even feed himself with what he’s growing. Without the hefty government subsidies, such large-scale corn operations would be out of business. They interview various farmers and ranchers who are disgusted with the system, but who have tiny right choice (one farmer says flatly, “We’re growing crap!”) . We’re shown the evolution of farming equipment and of the family farm itself as a quaint reminder of the past; there are nostalgic shots of Main Street and hometown parades, detached diners and local bars.
Ian and Curt’s visual style is playful; the charts and graphs are hand-drawn, interspersed with stop-motion plastic farm toys to accept the point across (and the dancing corn on the method of the US was astronomical, too) . The quirky soundtrack is a standout as well. DVD extras include some outtakes, a music video, bios, and some astronomical 1950s-style educational clips. King Corn is a thought-provoking search for at the dilapidated adage “You are what you eat,” and boy, it’s scary.
Although not perfect, I’ll give any documentary, movie, TV present or book five stars if it alters my life and King Corn definitely rates five rotund stars. I would highly recommend that everyone select or at least opinion this movie once; I had the opportunity to examine it this week on PBS’s series “Independent Lens.” Corn is nothing but a “raw material” that is separated to almost its basic elements and passe to design our daily “garbage” diet.
I learned about the relationship between obesity and the consume of high fructose corn syrup (aka HFCS) by accident a few years ago when I made a visit to Victoria, Texas and they sold Dr. Pepper with “Imperial Sugar” and the 10-2-4 logo on the bottle. I didn’t know that sometime in the early 70′s that the soft drink companies switched from sugar to HFCS as the sweetener. Who would have understanding that decades after being told that sugar is unpleasant for your teeth, etc., etc. that it is actually grand better for you than the HFCS alternative!
After watching this documentary I did some research and HFCS is in almost everything you catch. For example, it is that main ingredient in many of the ice cream syrups on the supermarket shelves… HFCS is in everything make hamburger and hot dog buns to “outrageous chubby” salad dressing! Honey graham crackers… EVERYTHING! Posthaste foods are bulky of this HFCS junk and this is only one of the many things you’ll learn from this documentary.
Where I live in Corpus Christi most of the population is obese, they consume dinky (if at all), have a high incidence of diabetes and rapidly foods are their celebrated filler. In fact, at the local Driscoll Children’s Hospital on one side you have the emergency entrance and on the other the “golden arches.” No joke! It is really black.
One can only project into the future after the wheat gluten from China killed our pets in the United States… Will we outsource growing corn to China so we can bag even cheaper HFCS to fatten and destroy our population off?
My only minor criticism is that the filmmakers didn’t glimpse our government’s role in ruining our diets by providing a version of “corporate welfare” to factory farms that invent this junk. As it turns out, they would not be in this business, assign the subsidies they secure from the USDA. Go figure!
UPDATE 13May08: A unusual chronicle in the The Wall Street Journal [1-year subscription] (May 7, 2008, Page B3A) by Susan Buchanan raises some engaging points on the expend of corn syrup.
I do not want to give anyone the impression that the only reason that our nation is obese is due to HFCS. In fact, the spot with obesity in the United States is the result of many interrelated and complex factors. They include, cheaper foods coupled with larger portions, an increase in eating out (especially at hastily food joints), reduction in utilize and, unfortunately, a greater acceptance of being overweight as the “norm” in our society.
As this film points out, our government is responsible for subsidies to develop something that is unprofitable generous, while at the same time making food cheaper with heavy doses of HFCS inside. I wish, instead, that our government would give great subsidies to organic farmers and tax breaks to those who trot or scamper their bikes to work. Instead, our government (FCC) is more concerned with giving us more channels of digital TV by February 2009; another major cause of obesity is the time spent sitting in front of the tube. Where I live the Corpus Christi Police Department and Nueces County Sheriff’s Department have almost a zero portray in regards to protecting pedestrians, joggers and bicyclists. It is downright risky to gain an anxiety to be physically fit where I live. At the same time, the set in Corpus Christi is not, by any means, recent in our country.
To slash the epidemic of obesity in the United States we need a multi-pronged attack on the pickle that includes aid from our government for more healthful ways of life and a population that will say NO to eating junk and YES to employ.

Fine Family entertainment about a monkey kids can relate to
As a child, what I loved best about Curious George was his absolute inability to resist temptation, especially if fun was involved. His curiousity got him into all sorts of trouble and I got a vicarious thrill out of watching him get out of trouble and have everything turn out all right, but not without a lot of action and suspense and humor first.
What kid can’t relate to the constant struggle between following the rules and testing the boundaries.?
Luckily, this movie stays true to the spirit of the classic books and it features a stellar cast, including Drew Barrymare and Will Ferrell. They do fine in their roles.
DO keep in mind that this movie is NOT designed to entertain adults (as Shrek did) There aren’t the clever “in” jokes and the animation is a bit strange at times. Also, there are updates such as cell phones (not around when Curious George was created).
But the spirit of the series remains intact. At the theatre where I saw the film, the younger members of the audience were laughing wildly. The older ones weren’t nearly as thrilled. It really is aimed at a younger age group.
With those aspects in mind, it’d be the perfect family film for those with young children.
Sweet and Splendid
Curious George is a delightful book and a delightful movie. That the two don’t match up very well is a testament to changing times I think, and not because the creators of the movie didn’t care about preserving the original. But before I get into that I will review the movie as it stands on its own.
The “man with the yellow hat” (nicely voiced by Will Farrel) is a museum docent who cares passionately about his work and wants to communicate his love of history and the natural world to a disinterested city. It seems that the museum is failing financially, and destined to soon become a parking lot unless he and the owner can come up with a grand new attraction to bring in the money. So the man with the yellow hat buys the latest in adventure clothing and sets out to Africa on a mission to find a gigantic idol for their exhibit. He finds George instead (a very good little monkey, but extremely curious). George stows away on the ship headed back to America, and there he creates a lot of mischief and fun. The man with the yellow hat is at a loss about what to do with his new little friend, but soon learns to appreciate the little monkey and learns from his insatiable curiosity to stop worrying and enjoying life more.
We are Curious George fans (my household includes a 4 and 7-year old to whom I have read these books many times before bed). I thought the movie was sweet and innocent, done in a simpler animation style with soft washes of bright color that stayed fairly true to the feeling of the illustrations from the books. This entranced my four year old: the seven year old was bored, as I might have expected. After all, the books were meant more for the pre-K ages.
Speaking of innocence, you might have guessed from my summary that the movie took HUGE liberties with the plot. In its defense, imagine movie audiences of today reacting to some guy showing up in Africa, dropping a monkey into a sack and hauling him off to America to live in his house largely unsupervised. Then imagine that the monkey accidentally dials the Fire Department, which shows up and arrests him for false alarm, taking him to a prison infested with rats. When the books were written what, 50 years ago? this may have seemed more plausible. Not today, by a long shot! So you see how there had to be a major rewrite for this to work as a movie in 2006.
I thought this was a fun film to see with your 2-5 year old child, but perhaps too simple for older kids unless they are rabid Curious George fans to begin with. We will probably rent or buy the DVD when it becomes available later this year.

NIce, sweet, appropriate for younger kids
I thought the movie was a breath of fresh air in an era of overhyped computer-animated “cartoons” full of in-jokes and sarcasm. This was a real cartoon- gently animated, slowly paced, and written for kids. No snarky sarcasm, no annoying talking animals, no ridiculous violence, just a sweet tale told so that it could be enjoyed by all ages. There is nothing to scare a very young child, and children will not come away with rude comments that they learned from it. It is what movies for kids should have always been.
The plot is slightly pointless, but the plot really isn’t the point anyway. The real point is how cute George is, and how nice it is to watch him being curious. The songs are sweet and not too loud or jarring. All of mine, from ages 2 up to 7, liked the movie, and it kept their attention without making them anxious. I wish I could give it six stars.

This thirteen section Masterpiece Theatre series, which first aired in 1979, is certainly worth watching as it is quite piquant and well done. Detailing the life and loves of the illustrious Lillie Langtry, the Victorian era superstar, it gives the viewer a taste of an era gone by. beautifully acted by a stellar cast, the production suffers only from the depressed lighting dilapidated in the nineteen seventies, giving the sets and actors a somewhat washed out and flat appearance. That being said, it is smooth a series well worth watching.
Born on the British isle of Jersey to a womanizing clergyman and his wife, Lillie grew up as a tomboy with a rare beauty. At an early age, she marries Edward Langtry, a purportedly wealthy yachtsman from a shipping family, who takes her to live in Southampton. There, she finds life not to her liking. She soon discovers that her husband has sold her a bill of goods, as his wealth has been spent. After a bout with a serious illness, she contrives a proceed to London, where she is exposed to a taste of high society. After a fallacious open, she gets noticed by the local swells and becomes a distinguished beauty, sought after by all. Now, a fashionable society woman, she finds herself with her name on everyone’s lips. Lillie eventually comes to the attention of the married Prince of Wales and becomes his mistress.
Trapped in her loveless marriage with the hapless and alcoholic Edward Langtry, Lillie goes on to have numerous fancy affairs with some of the most socially prominent and wealthy men of her day and eventually has a care for child. Courted by all, her beauty and need for money brings her to the stage, where she becomes an actress with her occupy company. Her fame by now has spanned the ocean and made her a celebrity in America, as well as in Europe.
Lillie certainly knew the value of marketing, as she endorsed numerous products with her name. A woman ahead of her time, who marched to the beat of her possess drum, she mild went to gargantuan trouble to avoid scandal, though it was never far from her doorstep. Alas, in the ruin, her fame and beauty decimated by age, her lovers slow or gone, Lillie, no longer the toast of two continents, ends up nothing more than a lonely dilapidated lady.
The cast for this production is stellar and the costumes are first rate. Francesca Annis is dazzling and certainly gives a competent performance as the famous Lillie. Though her performance is acclaimed, however, the viewer cannot serve but wonder why such a fuss was ever made over Lillie, as she comes across as supremely shallow and vapid. I attribute this to the fact that Ms. Annis’ portrayal of Lillie comes across as being rather flat, failing to do her a truly likable character. Peter Egan, on the other hand, is kindly as Oscar Wilde and, as far as I am concerned, steals the explain. Filled with considerable social intrigue and witty repartee, the series will maintain the viewer riveted to the cover.
This four disc DVD is well done with splendid visuals and clarity of sound. It does not offer powerful by method of bonus features, but with such a lengthy production, who cares. All in all, this is a very exquisite and interesting series that will provide the viewer with hours of viewing pleasure. Those who like period pieces and historical dramas will most certainly savor this one.
